Essay incoming:

I have to assume that, given his age, McCarthy is intended to be a transitional, bridge HC and the Steelers perhaps want to purposefully break from tradition with regards to keeping coaches on the payroll for 10-20 years. It is a much easier propisition to fire an old coach who is just anout retirement age, than a coach in his early 40s.

Perhaps this is also an unspoken but implicit acknowledgement from the Rooneys that, despite words to the contrary, the Steelers actually are in something that more closely resembles a full rebuild mode and, thus, would perhaps prefer not to potentially tarnish the reputation of a young and upcoming coach who might have otherwise needed to endure multiple lousy seasons before anything good happens.

Or maybe not – I don't think it's an entirely unreasonable angle to consider, though.

I'm not super excited about it, but I'm willing to give the guy a fair shake. I just wouldn't be surprised at all if he's gone in 5 years, regardless of how well the team does.

This is shocking. Do I think it will work? No.

However, we finally have a coach who is offense minded. Hire a good DC and who knows.

I doubt we keep him 15 years.

 

Unless some other earth shattering detail emerges, I can not think of a Steelers move that, as a fan, I have disliked more in the last forty years.

I hate it as well… we could’ve done worse like, as a person, than McCarthy, but it is hard to see this hire in a positive light. However we did hire the guy that 99% of the fanbase can agree on…. Unfortunately the fan base is just going to hate this hire

I hate this hire. McCarthy is a 62-year-old washed-out coach whose best days are behind him.

The Steelers have chosen to be Black-and-Gold loser buttercream frosted cupcakes for the next decade.

I now hate this owner, who is co-dependent, weak, and awful. I will NEVER say a positive thing about him again. Damn cuck.
