If this was the route you take Curt Cignetti. He just won a Natty. He’s from Pittsburgh. Gives fans a tough Cowher like coach. But due to his age he only had 5-10 years to coach. So you can mold the next 20+ year coach.

At least give us some hope vs Mike McCarthy. Literally NOBODY wants him.

    Great post.

Vrabel indeed a retread and working miracles already.

I don't hate this hire at all, again, high floor, possibly low ceiling.

What OC and DC he hires will make or break this whole thing.

Mccarthy wouldn’t have been my choice either. I wanted Schula personally, and I don’t understand why they’ve gone with Mccarthy without at least meeting with Schula next week

Guess I’m trying to see a silver lining. In reality, Rooney is too afraid to make a mistake and just went with the safe hire.

Regardless of who was hired for HC there is so much work to do on this team it would be another decade before a playoff win anyways.

McCarthy got run out of GB because he ran out of plays during gamedays, skipped meetings, and otherwise got stuck in the mud with no new ideas.

Then he spent a year in exile supposedly watching endless hours of tape with his coaching buddies devising new strategies and upgrading his scheme based on league wide trends. This is the claim that got him the Dallas job. A few weeks in, he admitted that was a lie and just ran the same stale stuff that got him run out of GB.

Also, having lived in the GB media market for the entire Mike McCarthy era...let me tell you if bad challenges, weird timeouts, and questionable game management decisions drove you nuts with Tomlin...buckle up, buttercup -- you're in for a wild ride with big Mike.

For me, this hire proves that Rooney is the driving force behind never considering anything less than a playoff run each year.

I honestly believe this is a horrendous hire and demonstrates that much of what Tomlin got blamed for comes from higher up the chain.

Even if he gets fired a third time, doesn't change my opinion of Tomlin. I think you confuse a bad hire with we "shoulda kept the useless slug Tomlin" thought process. Not at all.

Guarantee in two days nick farabaugh will be like I think this hire will be good.
He follows the crowd like the rest of the sheep.
Maybe he should have been in the interview session as well.
People don't know what could have happened if Tomlin never was hired. We could have won 3 super bowls with Ben.
We hired a young DC back then so that means we have to again. Lol

that's how I felt with Tomlin not being fired the past five years and getting the same deflating, disappointing results.

Right now, I am still enthused because of Tomlin gone. It's like sun poking through the clouds after 8 straight years of rain.

The Steelers were the poster child for building a team in the draft and developing players. McCarthys age is a strong signal that we won't be going back to that anytime soon. We didn't win Superbowl's by bringing in mercenaries and trading away picks.

Pure speculation on my part but this is my opinion on how this hire happened.

    1) Most the other young candidates offered up virtual 1st interviews
    2) McCarthy came in person and said "I'm a Pittsburgh Guy"

Done. NFL team owner are arrogant, cocky, rich and they don't want to be put on a back burner and offered up some lame a$$ Zoom or Teams interview. Those young coordinators were looking at multi-million dollar pay increases and they couldn't put the effort to squeeze in a 1 day trip to Pittsburgh?

I also think with 10 vacancies this year..... it might have been prudent to bring in the veteran coach and wait until a future market to nab your next long term franchise guy.

Most those other bad teams burn through those young guys and just stay bad teams.

I do agree that the OC and DC positions are critical..... so maybe one of those will eventually evolve into McCarthy's replacement.

Go Steelers, hoping for a seamless transition with McCarthy

I will add ONE more thing and then try and stay off the internet for a bit....

This all has a small chance of working if McCarthy's biggest asset becomes him being the adult mentor in the room. Hire someone like Scheelhasse (or however you spell it) as the OC. Hire another kinda unknown as the DC. McCarthy shows them how to grow into NFL coaches. Install a unified system. Then pass the reins to one of them in a few years (assuming you are experiencing success).

But if this becomes a McCarthy reunion tour with Rodgers and coaches we have all seen be mediocre in Dallas and Green Bay....then I think I might understand why Tomlin walked away.

I do not disagree with sentiment. But the young coaches were barred (I believe) by league rules from making an in person appearance.
