Again, Spillane has had 7 INT's since leaving the Steelers and playing for the Raiders and now the Patriots. They also want inside linebackers to stop the run.

Do you see the current big-contract ILB reading the play, flying into the proper hole and stoning running backs routinely? I don't.

Do you see our athletic, big-money ILB diagnosing screens and blowing up plays routinely? I don't.

Do you see great production in pass defense by Patrick Queen? I don't.

Do you see all the proper calls and seamless communication happening on the field because of the defensive quarterback? I don't.

Have you heard Vrable talk about Spillane? Maybe you should. Vrable called Spillane a "foundational piece". It's the way he plays. The way he leads, the violence and determination he plays with. The way he's always in the right spot. The way he makes sure everyone else is in the right spot and knows their assignment. The way he is always making plays. He's a tone setter. Spillane is always going to relay the right play calls and make the right checks. All this on a team one step away from a Super Bowl. He's not an athletic freak. He's just a terrific football player that knows what he has to do and what is asked of him within the scheme....and he brings it every single time he walks onto the field mentally and physically.

Remember when the Steelers had a whole lot of players that did all the little things right? I do...but that was a long time ago.

I also know that the people that are responsible for most of it are gone. It's just that some people want to keep making points to defend all things at all costs to protect Tomlin from criticism. Even if Tomlin didn't make every single call, he is responsible for the calls of the coordinators and coaches under him. It was his job to do so, and in that way he is ultimately responsible. People chose to defend them while they were here, and now they're defending the indefensible and making up stuff in their minds now that they're gone.

The schemes need to be upgraded and modernized, and then they have to see how many players they currently have that fit well into the new systems. After that, they need to add players that can thrive in the offensive and defensive schemes and hopefully everything takes off. We also need to hope that the next coach will have some of the leadership skills that Mike Tomlin has always had.

That’s a very different discussion than lamenting not resigning Robert Spillane.

I’m not a fan of Spillane. I’m just not. I think he’s just a guy. I think you can find heady run stuffing LBers fairly readily. Like I’ve already said, I believe Elandon Roberts was a better version of Spillane.

That doesn’t mean that I’m a fan of Patrick Queen. You and I used to post somewhere where I repeatedly said that the Queen signing wasn’t going to meet expectations. I was told that was just silly by many folks. Queen simply has no feel for the game. He’s an athletic marvel but he’s not a heady guy.

Never mind. Just saw they are hiring McCarthy. I’m out. No point in discussing anything further.

Nobody ever takes into account if for a simple layman's example ,one player on the OL, or DL is good at this one way of playing, and the others are good at a different way, you don't change the whole thing for one player. You try to help him adapt, or adjust to what the majority is good at, or You get rid of him so he can play where they run what he's good at.

I agree that the league has changed.

It's too bad because you basically need a marquee QB now.

Back when the league allowed defense, you could build a much more competitive team with defense and a consistent running game.
