Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl will interview for the open general manager position with the Atlanta Falcons, according to sources. Weidl has been with the Steelers since May of 2022 and is a well-respected personnel evaluator around league circles.

Not for nothing but Weidls resume is a heck of a lot more impressive than khans was. Khans claim to fame was being a brilliant capologist whereas Weidl has worked with Ozzy Newsome and Howe Rossman as well as several other prominent names. I’m surprised he hasnt been hired as a GM yet.

Again...how many times did they write articles like this about Kahn? He interviewed for open GM positions many times.

It's hard to get those jobs.

Your framing that the organization is going to choose between the two isn't what's happening here. Kahn is the GM. Weidl is his helper.

I hope we can keep Weidl. But we are not going to fire Kahn to promote Weidl.

He'd probably be a good GM. Just like Kahn is a good GM IMO (even though I think the mistake of going into two seasons in a row with only one NFL WR is a big one).

But there are only 32 of these jobs.

And hires are pretty nepotistic (which Kahn found out when he was first offered a job, but then had it rescinded).

I agree that Kahn doesn’t seem as stuck in his ways as our owner, but what has he done to prove himself to be a good GM? Our draft picks leave a lot to be desired, we overpay our over-the-hill defense, Metcalf wasn’t worth half his salary, and we still don’t have a legit WR2.

If we end up hiring Flores’ crybaby a*s, I think Kahn should be fired and someone would be wise to pull the 25th amendment on Rooney.

Would it really that big of a loss? Not like we won a Super Bowl or two while he was here.

    (1) I think that in general he's good at putting a value on a guy and not overpaying. I think you're right that Metcalf might be an exception to this. I do think that part of this was (1) an insistence on trading Pickens (which I think probably came more from coaches who worked with him day-to-day than a GM from a cap value perspective) and (2) new-ish cash spending rules in the NFL that force teams who haven't drafted well (and the end of Colbert's tenure was bad so we didn't really have many players worth paying big contracts on 2nd contracts...really very few 2nd contracts for key players at all).

    (2) I think he swindled CHI for a 2nd with Claypool.

    (3) He waited out Rodgers to not overpay him.

    (4) He waited out CHI in the trade for Fields. And also traded Kenny to undercut the market so Fields would be cheaper.

    (5) Who knows how much was his call, but I think cutting bait on Kenny was an excellent decision instead of playing him for 2 more years because the Steelers have almost always been patient about everything. I think he did a good job churning through cheap and potentially viable QB options since then. Ultimately, we need to hit on a QB in the draft IMO. But he's done a good job scouring the scrap heap for decent alternatives while we wait for that to happen (sadly, the wait might be very long)

    (6) Drafts since he became the GM appear to be trending upward. Part of this might be that the end of Colbert's tenure was bad. Part of this might also be Weidl. Part of it may also be that Tomlin had more say in decisions with Colbert gone. And since drafting is a chance based game, part of it might also be luck. Unfortunately, Jones looks like a miss, or maybe a push since he might be about what you expect in the back end of the 1st...either way, I had bigger hopes for Jones than what he's become. I do think TF and Harmon both look to be good players.

    (7) I think he did a good job extending Cam by talking him into taking a pay cut. The only "win" Cam got in that negotiation was the roster bonuses to the team has to decide if they want him back early (March) instead of just in camp. Then also not caving to his demands last offseason...but also letting him save face by giving him "unlikely to be earned" bonuses (don't count on current year's cap...only count on next year's cap if achieved...but they were basically unachievable for Cam).

The biggest things that I think he hasn't done well on are:
    (1) going in to two seasons in a row with only one WR and
    (2) having the team "lose" on every facet of the most recent TJ contract: AAV, guaranteed money, contract length, etc. Maybe there's not much you can do with a star player who is the face of a franchise that doesn't have any other real star players. But it would have been nice to "win" on at least some part of that deal.

I'm sure there are more examples of positives and negatives of his tenure as GM.

If Weidl is so valuable, promote Kahn to VP of Operations and Weidl to GM. Done.

Good point. If we do lose him, it wont affect this draft, most of the work is done already.

That will ease the pain a little bit. Still hope we can keep him.
