Why on earth would any Steelers fan want that? Just throw away a first rd pick.

If this is true it continues a trend of the previous two coaches. Pretty remarkable.

If Tomlin wanted this he could've just asked to be "fired" contractually. Rooney would've done it for him no doubt.

Also, Rooney will likely do right by Tomlin even if he were to get back into coaching. He could field trade offers from a bunch of teams and then let MT decide where he wants to go from the list. I am 100% certain that Rooney wouldn't play hardball and force the team MT desired to match the top offer. He'd just take it and wish Mike well...

Writeup is one year old right after the loss to Baltimore in the playoffs, but worth a read as it breaks down Tomlin's reign into two periods.

"“They are successful because they don’t change, and they can’t win a playoff game because they don’t change,” an opposing coach said."

"Retired NFL quarterback Alex Smith suggested on ESPN that the Steelers were running an analog offense in a digital age, while sitting back on defense"

The Mike Tomlin paradox and whether his Steelers tenure has run its course: Sando’s Pick Six - The Athletic

It seems that without the heroics of Roethlisberger in his prime Mike Tomlin's system to win simply doesn't work in the postseason.

These quotes PERFECTLY sum up the Mike Tomlin era. And it pains me to read them. How many years we all watched the same approach to the game. How many years, we listened to players around the league saying, "The Steelers do what they do", regardless of opponent. Mike Tomlin talking about, "Nameless gray faces". Seven straight playoff games, all following the same humiliating script.

Sad to say but Terry Bradshaw, while being overly disrespectful, was not far from the truth when he said Tomlin was more of a cheerleader guy than an X & O's guy. Tomlin was a great leader of men but too stubborn and egotistical to hire strong coordinators and empower them do their thing. And without superhero Ben in his prime to save the day, we ended up with a bunch of "participation trophies" of "winning seasons" without any chance of advancing in the playoffs.
