I heard that on the radio and actually hadn't thought of that at all. That could be a big deal for the Steelers but I do wonder if his intention is to take a year off to kind of reset. Maybe the job that he would be the most interested in hasn't opened yet.

Yes this is a good thing for the Steelers which if Tomlin was the author of that then I give him major props for that.

I do not like to see anyone lose their job. Tomlin was a respected coach, a good man and I feel a sense of loss at his departure. I relished in pictures of him going to Pirates and Penguins games with his boys. Truly, he embraced the Pittsburgh Tradition. A coach is only as good as his players. Too many times it appeared that the Steelers were flat and seemingly not interested in the game they were playing. Were they prepared? It really did not appear to be so, they always seemed to play down to their opponents. To me, that's a coaching issue. Oh yes, I got angry with the Steelers (and him) for their lackadaisical play. That's on the players, not necessarily on the coaches. I wish Coach Tomlin all the best and want him to know that I appreciated his sacrifice as well as his family's sacrifice, to better the Pittsburgh Steelers. I know now that certain "Tomlinisms" will forever bring a smile to my face....."Unleashing Hell in December...." The Standard is the standard..." and how could I ever forget when things went south...
    "We own it."

Good luck, Coach. You have made your mark on Pittsburgh. Thank you, sir.

Thanks for the memories, right? I was in high school when he helped us win the Super Bowl. Just because I am glad he no longer coaches the Steelers, doesn’t mean that I am not appreciative of all the good times there were in his tenure. Looking forward to what’s to come, but we have an enviable job opening because of our past.

Thank you, Coach Tomlin. Looking forward to the next chapter in Steelers football lore

We will all cheer for Mike when the Super Bowl reunions come around and he comes back.

He will probably go to Canton and we will all cheer.

He had a lot of success and there were some exciting moments, but the only thing constant in life is change. His legacy is cemented.

Yup, I was on the Trib board defending Cowher against his haters which is when I was first called a Lemming. More recently I am called a Tomlin fan. But I will ALWAYS root for our coach, and will root for the next one.

Your overall assessment is spot on.

I always felt more competitive with Bill. He could play advantages, game plan better, exploit weaknesses and come up with trick plays that would actually work. Had a winning playoff record with subpar qbs almost his entire career. Plus his assistants were good enough to be sought after by other teams. Plus I just loved his passion. Perfect he was not but I will always have a ton of respect for the chin.

I wish Mike Tomlin nothing but the best. When Cowher left, I wanted Ken Whisenhunt to replace him. I remember watching Mike Tomlin get interviewed by KDKA during the Steelers coaching search. I instantly knew he was going to get hired. There was just something about him that stood out. He was the perfect coach to take over for Cowher. Tomlin had many of the same qualities as Cowher, only he was younger and more aggressive. I give him full credit for leading the Steelers to #6, and the man helped the Steelers get damn close to #7. I hope Mike finds success in whatever comes next.

I wish him well, he did get a super bowl for us in 08. But he stayed 8 years too long and we wasted Ben’s best years under his tenure. I cant call him a great coach, Good perhaps, maybe a great guy. He didnt build a poor team into a contender like Noll and Cowher did. Thats about it.

I want to thank Mike Tomlin for stepping down and changing the entire media talk today. In a day after such a humiliating loss I was expecting to have to turn off all the media noise and avoid everything Pittsburgh; but thanks to Mike Tomlin hardly anyone out there is even talking about the game.

Thank you Mike Tomlin for taking one for the team and making Loser Tuesday all about Mike Tomlin, instead of the :poopy:-show that was Monday night. :D

Comparing Cowher and Tomlin is only something a confused simpleton would say.

Cowher did more with less at the time where he never had a franchise QB until the last three years of his 15, dealt with free agent losses in the late 90s that were gut punches every March until he rebuilt the second phase of his run which would have given him a second Super Bowl had he waited a two more years to retire. Who knows, maybe had he gone until 2010, maybe they win that game too, we will never know.

Tomlin isn’t 1/4 talent Cowher ever was. And if the Rooney’s had just drafted Marino in 83, there was a good chance that Chuck Noll may have had a second run to Super Bowls.

Too many variables, too many what ifs, but there is no doubt, with someone that has watched virtually every Steelers game since 1996 other than MAYBE 3 games total, that Bill Cowher is light years better on his worst day than Tomlin was on his best day.

I’m tired of being told by ass kissers that Mike Tomlin is a great coach. He isn’t. There is a 15 year back log to prove it. If certain people don’t wish to have it be real, well, you can message me and I can make it real for you.

15 years straight and the only wins where it mattered were against AJ McCarren(back up QB), Matt Moore(Journeyman QB) and a B-/C+ QB in Alex Smith. And that win against the Bengals was a loss until two morons on the bengals decided to give the game away for being complete retards at the end of the game.

Stop comparing Cowher to Tomlin and stop telling me Mike Tomlin is or was a great coach. It’s an insult to common sense and intelligence.

    SI got it exactly right:

"In taking the Payton path, Tomlin has likely recognized what the rest of the NFL did years ago: This iteration of the Steelers’ roster has reached a natural end point. Despite an unbeatable streak of 19 seasons at .500 or better, most of Pittsburgh’s core is aging out. Its quarterback is likely retiring. Not counting the kicker, the Steelers’ roster has 14 players over the age of 30 and, despite some young talent, was heavily dependent on a cadre of Tomlin lieutenants."

"A second tidbit: Many assistant coach contracts were up in Pittsburgh, which felt like a natural pivot point for the Steelers to move on."

"This job is revered because the Steelers are an elite, blueblood franchise, but the team is without an obvious solution at quarterback moving forward and, as we mentioned, the coach will inherit an aging core of key contributors."

Thank you coach T, I was not your biggest supporter of yours for the last 10 years,
But you did the best you could and represented the Steelers and the city of PGH with much pride.
You have been a steller human being, continue this and the best of luck to you and your family going forward.

I'm happy we are finally getting a new coach, and as I said in another post, I was surprisingly emotional see Tomlin's pic and the headline. I wish him the best. I hope these next few weeks aren't a bunch of media clowns retroactively bashing him. I see some of that already, and he doesn't deserve it. I truly believe he was doing the best he could. Also, all of the media Tomlin defenders just need to shut the fk up if they want to all of a sudden try and explain why it was time for him to go.

I also have to give Tomlin credit for building teams that couldn't compete in the playoffs. He had a big hand in assembling and coaching these rosters. And regarding the QB, if he had done a better job evaluating talent out of college and groomed someone to play modern, offensive football - instead of habitually looking for past-their-prime veterans, maybe we wouldn't have had such abysmal offensive performances over the past 7 years. Same goes with the offensive coordinators. I also give Tomlin credit for hiring poor coordinators and imposing his conservative style on them.

I agree with that too. Even though I still feel that Tomlin was very good at scraping out a winning record every year with a subpar roster, you are correct that he played a big part in creating that roster.

Mike Tomlin needs a little time away from the game. If he takes a couple steps back and has the time and the presence to evaluate and reflect on his coaching career and honestly see how some things could have been done differently, or maybe see that getting too set in his ways, maybe embraced change a little more, I think he can come back and be better than ever if he chooses to do it again.

    yes.....and no

His losing 3 AFCCG's will never sit well with me.

We were highly favored vs. the Chargers. that was pathetic!

And should not have lost to the Pats in 2001.

He was not an elite X's and O's guy. He got outcoached in big games. Loved his passion to, but by 2003, I was done with him. He benefited from beating TERRIBLE CLE and CINCY teams for years - 4 auto wins every year. We had an easy division for the years Cowher coached. one of the easiest yr in and yr out in the league.

He DID NOT THINK he needed a great QB - he thought he could win with muscle.......he LUCKED into Ben and his one Super Bowl.....he had subpar QB's because he wanted to!

His Kent Graham experiment was RIDICULOUS. Kordell was a nice try for 2-3 years.....

It was time for the CHIN to go too, when he went.

they all have a shelf life......including Andy Reid, he had to get OUT of Philly....

Thanks Mike, but it was time, blown out in 7 straight playoff games, shows that the Steelers as constructed were simply not god enough, they were never going to reset or rebuild, and take lumps under MT so, in essence he had his shot every year and couldn't come up with the goods, he's done remarkably well with a mish mish of QB's and a less than ideal roster, (poor o-line for years, no WR room for last 2 years, haevn't had a dynamic differnce maker on offense for years and on and on....)

In the end though if you don't want to take a step back, they you have to take a step forward and The Steelers were not doing that, this is years of evidence not one or two games.

The team can hopfully find the right HC and find the next QB, because you've got next to no chance of a SB without one. People can be "be careful what you wish for" but I'm not in this and the team should not be in this to win 9 games, miss the playoffs, or get blown out and then pick 22 every season.

The Steelers have the 4th most draft capital by value in the NFL, they have to blow this up now and make the most of the draft picks, they should be having a yard sale before April. Home of the draft in '26, new HC, new approach and a new start.

I'm looking forward to the future.

The haters are just that Haters. They hate life and love to ***** and moan.

No, I wouldn't put Mike Tomlin up there with some greats but he deserves his credit.
No doubt it was time to move on. 19-years in the NFL on the same team is way too long.
Players and coaches give Tomlin tons of respect as do the talking heads that suckle off the sport.

Someday I'll tell the tale of Duanne Haskins, a talented guy that was troubled, very troubled... Mike Tomlin gave him a lot.
    And failed.

Tomlin basically lived in the Park. He was there for all his guys.
    Perhaps that's his downfall.

Personally, I was with Washington for decades, and I personally saw Tomlin give time to anyone.
He was busy as all get out but always took a few minutes.

Professionally, I think he got stale and too loyal to his guys.
He didn't strive to grab up or upgrade his staff.
He sort of was playing late 70's football.

It was time, past time. In end, he moved to resign be it from pressure or his own will.
I love the 2 Super Bowl marches, I wish we could have beaten Rogers and the Packers.
As the game of football evolved, it was noticeable that the Steelers weren't moving with it.
Analytics, player movements, new strategies were things we should have taking advantage of.

I doubt there's many coaches who would have winning seasons over 19 years.
0-7 in playoffs is the damning torpedo.
No doubt in the fact it is time to change.
Some folks, just have no values and see nothing else. It's just the way of world. I prefer to walk a different path.
    I'm glad it's a new era.

Thanks Coach T. Those many, many hours dedicated are appreciated by those players and coaches and a lot of fans.
    Good luck going forward.

Now lets get a new coach in here and get things going.
