Miami fans rented a plane (a guy I know) to fly over the stadium with the banner "Fire McDaniel" at every home game.

I didn't like the chants. Not because I thought they were undeserved. But because it had to come to that sad conclusion. When you coach for 19 years and only win a playoff game in 4 of them, and you lose 7 consecutive playoff games that weren't even remotely competitive - they were downright embarrassing - then this was the only way the fans were going to be heard.

I loved Mike Tomlin in the first half of his career. But the past decade has been getting worse by the year. I grew tired of his inability to change and adapt. Tired of hearing former players and opponents say how the Steelers' schemes were so predictable. I grew tired of his attitude. He'd bark at reporters like they had no business questioning him. He'd thump his chest when he won a "big" regular season game and then look like a deer in the headlights in the playoffs.

It was past time for a change. And if those chants had any impact on making it happen, then so be it.

One man's trash is another man's treasure! LOL. The only way I'd want him here is maybe as a coordinator.

Tomlin should have had the good sense to step away after Ben left. The team has been spinning its wheels since. As much as Tomlin would deny it I think the non losing seasons record was important to him, and it created a short term mindset, stymieing more strategic long term planning and team building.

It’s very unfortunate that it came to boos in the stadium, but that’s what you get when you have a team that is going nowhere. The fans were fed up and it’s the only forum they have to vent their frustration.

I like Mike T and wish him the very best but he overstayed his tenure in my view.

The thing about boos and fire chants in football, they are always earned. Arguments the fans can't handle losing seasons are weak and pure cope about fearing change.

Spoken like someone with the capacity to chant douchebaggery. When grown azz men have nothing but insults to say. I'm not expecting much intelligent to be said from you.

    Have a nice day.

For what it's matters, I agree with the concept that a change at the head coach position is likely overdue. I also understand why they stayed with the status quo hoping it'd get better.

I'm just calling out what i call douchebags having fun with it.

Tomlin showed the class and stepped down.

Now I want to see how these fruitcake handle a losing season lmao

Tomlin is right about being disrespected. The chants are disrespectful. They are meant to be disrespectful. That's the point of them.

I felt like he would coach out his contract and then we would be searching for a new HC. I didn't think it would be this cycle. I still don't think it was the chants that made him step down though. You don't coach this long if you have thin skin and can't take controversy. Tomlin could certainly handle controversy.

I think it has more to do with the rebuild, not enough time on his contract to complete the rebuild, and 2 decades at one job gets stale. If Tomlin never coaches again I will be disappointed. I think he has too much to offer as a football coach to quit altogether.

I just hope he does not go back to Maryland, take the Ravens job, and do what Hairball couldn't.

And my opinion is that you are 100 percent incorrect. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree, but i made my position known.

Here's to a couple rough years ahead. :drinks:

    It is time to rebuild.

I don't see it as douchebags having fun with it at all. I see it as passionate fans voicing their extreme displeasure. That we didn't hear such chants before this season speaks of a lot of restraint on the part of the fans. No other franchise in the league would allow a coach to stay, that previously lost 6 consecutive playoff games in embarrassing, humiliating fashion, with only 4 seasons out of 19 with a playoff win. The Steelers and the fanbase have been extremely patient and respectful with Tomlin. As has the media.

And enters the new Steelers coach!

    Stanger things have happened.

There's a whole lot of openings right now at the HC position. Get the popcorn ready.

Yeah but for someone like Mike and some others the opportunity to prove that the success they had was of their own making and not the result of a player is too great a challenge to not take. Heck we need to look no further than Belichick and his tarnished reputation as he tried to prove it was his genius and not Brady's that won 6 SB's.

I liked Tomlin but even I got tired of defending him after terrible losses vs bad teams at critical times. There comes a point where you end up defending bad coaching and you have to be honest with yourself.

The OP likes Tomlin the man, not Tomlin the HC. Acting like this was Tomlin’s first playoff loss in years. We have been mediocre for a decade and abysmal in the playoffs. Even out last playoff victory had the help of Peezy during a stop in play when he was a coach.

He simply overstayed his time which had this end the way it did. I blame that mostly on AR honestly it’s hard to fire yourself. I’m just happy it’s over. If he would have left 5 years ago I think we would have looked at him differently.

It sucks...I boo'd Ben the last time I saw him play (to be fair I was more booing the offense), but if the fans voicing their opinion is what it takes to motivate change, so be it.

I'll miss Tomlin and him leaving is bittersweet, but in the same breath, I couldn't be more excited that he is gone. Basically 20 years is just way too long...I applaud him for stepping down even though it was probably a little too late.

I look forward to him being celebrated at a future game and receiving a proper goodbye.

The reality is this team is long overdue for a rebuild they kept trying to establish a playoff caliber team, which is really on Rooney. They kept kicking the tires until what is happening now is going to happen.

The car is going to the scap yard long overdue. Rogers won't be coming back. Heyward will likely retire. That's just two of many changes i believe are coming.

I'm just wondering if this fan base can remember (or is old enough) to remember the 80s.

I guess we will find out. I'm optimistic but there will be some pains in the process. I wonder how many are ready for that and/or can handle it emotionally.

    Happens damn near every year.

Thing is.. most franchises fire their HC’s much quicker.

While I dont care for the Fire Tomlin chants it doesn't shock me either. Cowher said he'd wait to go to the gas station until late at night. Kordell Stewart is still accused of being gay by fans who are still upset about losing AFCCGs. Mendenhall gets mountains of hate because he fumbled in the SB and then had the misfortune of having controversial opinions. James Harrison yes James Harrison is still a villain to legions of Steelers fans because of how things ended. So yeah not sure I can be shocked anymore.

That's not true if Mark Madden begins to gain traction on his trade Sidney Crosby for magic beans bull$%i! Then I will be shocked and saddened.

My impression of him is great, but also believe it is time. I think obviously the manner of sending him off could have been better. I do think many don't fully appreciate what he did here, and that's ok because I don't expect a lot from the majority a lot of times.

AR is in a business. That is selling tickets and merchandise, which he did. He's now forced into a situation where he has to find a quality coach at a historic position in Pittsburgh in a market where there a lot of openings.

I agree with everything you said. It's the nature of the beast.

It doesn't mean i'll stand by idly by without calling them out.
