Is it possible for TJ and the Steelers to amicably tear apart the contract before the league new year in March and wipe the guarantees and such off the board; would the league and NFLPA approve of such an action? I have my doubts on the potential of this working, but felt like asking anyway.

    LMAO

No. That.. isn't something that can happen. Why would TJ want that even if he could? Like... Tear up his big money contract and go play for his new market value, which is less?

Trade him to a team like the cowboys for a 1st round pick.

he's the least of our problems. my god man. change schemes and other folks and he will be just fine. you cant have all pros at 22 positions. this is not madden, he could very well bring other intangibles not on the box score that helps.

I hear what you're saying and my thoughts when asking such a question is merely along the lines of his willingness to be apart of a rebuild under a rookie HC during his sunset years as a player.

No way is anyone going to trade a 1st round pick for TJ now. 3 or 4 years ago, yes. Plus, they would have to pay his whopping 41 million a year salary, and he's not worth anywhere near that.

The team has cap space. Yes TJ is overpaid in the context of where he is as a player now. But the contract isn’t the millstone that people are making it out to be, especially the way the cap is ballooning every year. The team will have enough cap space to work with

Trade him for George Pickens. We need a #2 WR.

I'm not looking at it from a cap angle and more or less looking at it from the mindset of TJ not wanting to be apart of a rebuild under a new coach and wanting to get to a team where he can get a ring.

I see. That makes more sense, albeit is there a contender that will trade for TJ with that deal?

Also I’m not seeing a reason the Steelers can’t turn this around quickly if they make the right coaching hire in the first instance.

They have a lot of cap space over the coming years and will have five picks in the first four rounds of the 2026 draft. They also have some good talent added in recent years with Harmon, JPJ, Frazier, Herbig etc.

This is a better job than some are making it out to be and I don’t see this team as necessarily being doomed to multiple losing seasons. QB is of course the big conundrum.

No way cowboys would offer that.
    1. He's over 30
    2. 7 sacks is good, but not impressive.
    3. Massive contract

I doubt any team would trade for him.

He is a future HOF, maybe a new scheme/coaching staff will invigorate him?

Why? Would a team do the opposite if they were underpaying him?

I was thinking the same thing about TJ. Is there a way we can get out of this awful deal. We need to purge this roster of older overpaid players that have won nothing here.

I haven’t dug into the specific numbers in TJ’s contract recently in the context of what can be done to spread guarantees between the Steelers and a new team, but I do wonder if TJ would be amenable to working something out that lets him go to a 2026 contender. If the Steelers approach this regime change the right way, there’s going to be some short term pain for long term gain, and I do not expect us to do any better than maybe be a surprise 9-10 win team next year if the ball bounces our way. I don’t see that as a high probability. More likely we’ll lose double digit games as younger players cut their teeth at the NFL level.

TJ deserves a chance to play for a more likely contender next year if he wants to.

Excellent point. TJ may benefit the most from a coaching change. New HC and I imagine a top notch DC is going to be brought in.

Well then Dallas would not be a good destination.

They made a mistake by giving him that contract and that's all on Art II

Exactly, Watt's contract is not hampering the team. They have a significant amount of available cap space this off-season, and can easily create another $40M or so in space with a few releases of older players (Jonnu, Ramsey, etc).

TJ's overall role may change in this defense. The new regime may look to trade him. TJ may decide to walk away from the game. We may find out TJ was dealing with other injuries that weren't public knowledge and he gets back to his old self somewhat next season.

My Magic 8 Ball is unclear.
