I don't think building a team with other teams rejects is the way to go. I think we have to go back and do what Noll and Cowher did - build a team through the draft. We don't want other teams problems.

I agree we need to emphasize the draft and continue the youth movement, but we still need to acquire Free Agents for depth. There are several top defenses who supplement their linebackers and defensive line depth with free agents.

Certainly the Quarterback position needs to be through the draft. These free agent retreads are Band-Aids at best. We have drafted Howard, Mason, and will no doubt keeping drafting QB's until we find the next franchise QB.

Dallas has that only draft philosophy, it doesn't work, and they are stuck in perpetual mediocrity.

And how many years are you planning for this to take

If they get 3 good players out of the draft it’s a good draft on average

So basically 2023 to potentially 2025.

Joey Porter Jr., Darnell Washington, Nick Herbig, Spencer Anderson, Troy Fautanu, Zach Frazier, Mason McCormick, Derrick Harmon, Jack Sawyer, Yahya Black and Carson Bruener. 11 players in total; 4 of which are from Omar Khan's inaugural draft. Jury is still very much out for 2024 though I am confident in the three Linemen. 2025 same thing.

Will have to wait and see.

On the related note of the OP?! I agree 100%. Wasn't a fan of the D.K. Metcalf trade back in the Offseason even though the team did need a WR for Aaron Rodgers.

Now that the team does have the assets to reset, I'd say it is time to do so. Even if that includes trading down sans two players?! So be it.

I like the DK acquisition. He was awesome but they used him on bunch screens a lot. That was our short outside game. I hope we get an offense that can utilize some of the weapons we have at receiver.

We have to get out from some of these awful contracts we recently signed.

Well Noll didn’t have any options.

The cornerstone of how much of Cowher’s career was Jerome Bettis. What round did the Steelers draft him in again?

The first three years of Cowher’s career predates free agency. Or at least the version we know now.

I agree that the draft is an excellent way to build a team but no need to rewrite history to make the point.

Saying you're going to rebuild through the draft is the easy part.

Hitting on draft picks? That's the hard part.

I agree mostly. I would say that we do need to build from the draft, but we also will need existing players that fit in. What I don't want is for us to plug holes to be competitive. That is what we have been doing for almost a decade now and it has not worked. We fans need to be ready to support a couple of bad seasons with the goal of building a franchise that can run deep for multiple years in a row.

I won't like losing, but if the team is rebuilding right, I will watch and cheer them as loud as ever.

If GMDot was given the job we would’ve been 2-3 years into our rebuild already…. I’m just saying

    Sure

But the post I was responding to seemed to be inferring toss everything and start from scratch now

    Which is unrealistic

I feel the same way. Hopefully they put a little more emphasis on character when drafting. I know its not a easy thing to do but get more football players and less divas. Ask the right questions and research to get more hines ward types and less claypool, pickens, brown ect

Good grief if they want Ty Simpson they might not have to trade anything, he could be there at #21. His stock has fallen after bad outings against Georgia and Indiana.

The only way to build a team is to draft heavily from the Delmarva region. You should know that, lol

It's definitely going to be interesting to see how a new HC, alongside Khan & Weidl, evaluates the roster in February and who we offload this March, via cuts and trades. I think DK and TJ are safe, for obvious reasons, but guys like Jonnu Smith, Queen, Ramsey and Highsmith are certainly question marks moving forward. And I definitely see Heyward retiring.

Bettis was very unusual situation for the Steelers
Steelers hardly ever participated in trades
    Was a first
Draft isn’t the do all or end all but a good place to start
Free agency to pick up key parts not half your team like recently
Or the nursing home or garbage dump for qbs

And Cowher's first SB appearance had a lot of Noll's players (O'Donnell, Mills, Lake, Lloyd) and free agents (K Greene, Pegram, John Williams, Seals, Norm Johnson).

Noll had the #1 pick in both 69 (Greene) and 70 (Bradshaw).
Still didn't make the playoffs until 72.
For all the people complaining about the Steelers not winning a playoff game in ages, I doubt they would be any less upset about having the league's worst record for 2 consecutive years and not making the playoffs for 3.

Agree. Not a good take. The last person any organization should heed about QBs is Colin Cowherd. I like how Nick Wright took Colin apart about Justin Herbert.

    https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Pz4Ikh6dBtQ

I hope Jim Harbaugh's next Offensive Coordinator knows the Heimlich for when Justin Herbert is in his 4th playoff appearance.

The Steelers should likely draft a QB every year, in either the upper or lower rounds, but BPA on the board. Sure, trade up if possible, but don't be stupid.
