You mean something like “I’m so smart and the team is so dumb, so here’s a book on smart I am?” Something like that?

I want a great head coach. If there’s a great defensive guy who will go after a strong OC candidate and stay hands off, that’s fine.

Here in lies the problem; such OCs are targeted by NFL Teams who go on to become Head Coaches. This has happened many times over the past five seasons. For that matter, should Klint Kubiak go, it will be interesting to see how Mike MacDonald will fare.

Long story short?! This is an Offensive Driven League. Have to score points, in numerous creative ways to win.

We shall see; same goes for New England. Buffalo is also not out of the question either though I like Denvers chances a lot more than Buffalo's. In addition, remember that Houstons Defense is hard carrying that team. New England and Buffalo both have great OCs combined with Great QBs.

Compare that to the rest of the NFL Playoff Teams remaining.

Coaching trees are grown. A QB coach or passing game coordinator can be promoted from within to OC with the same system. If there’s a defensive guy available who is a terrific leader, I would take him over a Mike McDaniel. If there’s an offensive guy who is a great leader, then that’s great too. I’m prioritizing getting the best overall leader to lead the franchise long-term.

I think a trade for Mac Jones isn't out of the question... Especially if we hire Kubiak (who is a Shanahan guy). Malik Willis and Daniel Jones are FA's. I wouldn't mind Mac Jones as a short term bridge until we find the guy (or to let Howard develop into the guy). There's a world where some of the older players drop off the team as cap casualties and we walk into FA with like 85-90 million bucks (with restructures, we could head into it with around 100 million). Bring in an offensive guy and reshape the roster. I'm not convinced we're a bottom 5 team immediately. With a slew of good coaches and the right roster moves (and obviously a good draft), we could put ourselves in a really nice situation.

Kubiak is my #1 target for the cycle. I wouldn't hate Stefanski as a good option (he hires coordinators well and his offensive scheme would be well liked in Pittsburgh), but I think he's the only re-tread that I would entertain.

I originally posted this at the end of November. I’ve worked a lot of mojo to make this happen.

Some intriguing names on here. I like Kubiak Lafleur and Robinson. Havent heard Frank Smiths name mentioned yet, wonder if he’ll get looked at.

Chris Shula too although he is a defensive coach but as Elvis stated, hire a good OC.

With as fast as this happened, I suspect this was decided before hand and Rooney knew this was Mikes last season.

Players may have known as well. Were some comments about winning for Tomlin and we assumed it was in reference of the fire Tomlin chants but maybe they knew it was his last year and thats what they meant.

Isn't Denver's defense top notch also?

Because we have history of keeping HC`s, we have best reputation and have the most sought after job opening.

That leader has to be from an Offensive Standpoint though. Therein lies the issue. If this were the 2000s, I'd agree with you that the best overall leader, regardless of affiliation, would be the best pick.

In today's NFL?! You need that dude from an Offensive Background. Mike Vrabel and DeMeco Ryans are outliers at present. Mike MacDonald has Klint Kubiak and, as such, I am reserving judgement on him.

All truly good head coaches are outliers, irrespective of which side of the ball they started on. The leadership qualities that define a really good coach transcend offense, defense or scheme. A great defensive mind will be better equipped to stop other teams’ offenses. Last time I checked, that was more than slightly important as well.

I think you’re wrong that the next HC needs to be an offensive mind, and you’ve actually missed what would be the #1 argument in favor of an offensive HC. The pairing of a coach with a young QB for a long term. I can see that argument, but there have been plenty of successes and failures of those pairings with coaches from either side of the ball.

A head coach needs to be bigger than one side of the ball.

We’re all excited now, well a lot of us are but we are probably throwing out names that are too big and will come with a large price tag.

It will likely be the Chris Shulas and Jesse Minters of the world or even someone like Marcus Freeman. He said hes not interested in jumping to the NFL but if the Pittsburgh Steelers call you, that may make you change your mind.

That stability, knowing you will be given a chance to succeed and dont have to worry about ownership having a quick trigger. That has to be appealing.

I really hope that we don't try to hard because the draft is "at home".

Seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Just like drafting a QB because we need one and a guy went to college in the same town.

Honestly, if there isn't a legit QB prospect there when we pick in the first, I hope we trade picks this year for earlier picks next year.

Trying to rush a rebuild is a great way to screw it up IMO.

Go slow and don't be afraid of a few lean seasons.
