Yeah and the new "safety" rules pretty much have phased out ST all together. What pro kicker can't just boom it through the back of the end zone really?

David Wilson of the Giants led the league with 1533 return yards and they still kicked it to him 57 times. Joshua Cribbs who is one of the most dangerous return men in the game fielded 43 kicks.

Theres no doubt touchbacks have gone way up since the rule change but they still return a significant amount of them.

I like Mike Golic Jr for the same reasons as Lizard72 spoke of. Also Coastal Steeler made a great point about being on Mike & Mike!!

I for one think this Iowasteel guy has a chance to make it. After all, David Johnson is still on the roster...

he sounds more like our new strength and conditioning coach, or couch however you like. on gameday with that quick touch on the remote he can tell MT whether to challenge or not. win-win for the team. what's not to like?

This is maybe a dark horse that nobody would really care about, but how about Luke Ingram the LS? Warren has been solid over the years, but he's getting older and he's had a couple of knee surgeries I believe. This kid could have a real chance if he has a good camp and preseason.

he's supposed to be pretty good. i read they only save 124,000 if they kept ingram. maybe warren gets one last shot to the SB. he didn't play in one and he missed playoffs another time retkowsky or something like that came in twice for us during the season.

To answer this question you have got to look at who definitely makes the 53 man roster, what positions are filled out and then the positions that have a gluten of players competing for a few spots. These spots are given to guys who can also play ST well or versatile providing Position Flexibility. Maybe creating a position for a special talent like KR/PR. Another thing to take into consideration is rookies and those on the PS.

There's a lot of longshots and that's a good thing. Reggie Dunn as a returner. Can Gilbreath finally crack the 53 and overtake an aging Plax. Safety Damon Cromartie-Smith is at the end of PS eligibility so its 53 or bust. Golden beat him out last year and can play CB so DCS is a sure longshot- but is he worth it? DeMarcus Van-Dyke , CB, was highly touted coming out of college, has exceptional speed and good size and but can he play ST and can he beat out Curtis Brown who has not been shining lately and what about Hawthorne, the rookie. Do we keep him on the 53 to protect our investment or do we attempt to PS him.

On the OL we're locked in with Pouncey, DD , Foster, Gilbert, Adams, Beachum. That's 6 out of probably 9 we're gonna keep. Who's left/ Malecki, Joe Madsen, Nick Embernate, Golic Jr., Joe Long and Whimper. That's 6 more OL fighting for 3 spots.

Just a few thoughts ( I have many more.. LOL ) but to finally answer this question..........

Its down to Longshot WR Gilbreath over Plax, Safety DCS, rookie Hawthorne and returner Dunn....................... drum roll....................................................

Winner is Reggie Dunn!!!!! Reason is he's the Biggest longshot since we RARELY have a position solely for returner. If he can produce and can return punts he makes the final 53. This will have an effect on the 53 as it takes away a spot, probably that 5th safety position kicking DCS to the curb. Plax is too much one-dimensional, so Gilbreath beats him out final week of pre-season. Rookie Hawthorne is 50/50, I now think and may update my 53 man prediction he ends up on the PS and Van-Dyke with Woodson and Lake's help cracks the roster.

Just curious...for those that think Dunn makes the 53, do you think we keep both him and LaRod Stephens-Howling? Or does he somehow make it while LSH does not?

How about Brian Arnfelt DE Northwestern?

6'4 305 lbs, benched 38 reps and ran a sub 5 forty.. He can play too.

I, for one, don't think these two are linked at all. LSH makes the team regardless of what happens with Dunn. He is more of a change of pace RB, 3rd down type of guy that we don't have anywhere else, redman, dwyer and Bell are all about the same in that they are all big, strong backs.

Dunn may be listed on the 53 as a RB or wr but that's just for listing purposes, he'll be strictly a returner and I highly doubt he gets any touches anywhere else.

I was at the Carolina/steeler preseason game a few years back, the panthers were about to kick and I told my wife, see that guy ( Logan ) back there, he has only one chance to make this team and that is he must be a great returner, at that moment he received the ball, zigged then zagged then hit the open field for a TD. I then turned to my wife and said, he just made the team and a few days later he was on the final 53.

I would actually prefer to have a true WR ( 4th or 5th ) or CB ( 3rd-5th ) returning kicks & punts, as long as they are good at it because it frees up a roster spot. Keeping a spot solely for a returner may sound crazy but football is still a game of field position and a returner shortens that field for the offense and lengthens it for the defense. Plus they can score. If Dunn can return punts and produce in the NFL like he did in college, its a no-brainer but that is "if" he can and we all know "if" is the biggest word in life.

He's a HUGE longshot to make the 53, I'd say impossible to do without injurys. He's also a longshot to make the PS, most likely Fangupo ( NT) and Nick Williams ( DL) make the PS. I can't see the Steelers investing 3 out of 8 ( 38% ) of the PS allotment on the DL. This is all speculation of course, he could come in and get noticed, shine and force the coaching staff to make a hard decision on what 2 out of these 3 to keep.

Can't we keep them all? Embernasty, Golic, Dunn, LSH, Arnfelt, Brown, Williams? What? I see nothing wrong with this

I like him but haven't heard a peep about him since the draft. Maybe that's a good thing, if he goes to the PS, he won't draw much attention.

I can see them keeping both Dunn & LSH, as well as both Dwyer & Redman. IMO I just don't see them keeping both Gilbreath & Dunn. I'm sure hoping they don't keep both Burress & Cotchery. Preseason should be fun to watch.

They're linked because of their return abilities. LSH being on the roster makes it that much more of a longshot for Dunn to make it. Don't get me wrong, he's lightning in a bottle and I hope he impresses at camp.

Gilreath cant hold a 40 year old Plax jock......Gilreath offers nothing that Brown, Sanders, Wheaton don't already offer.

punt and kick returns is what he adds. as well as a year in the system at wr. the punt return part will be the thing that keeps him if LSH fails to do it or dunn fails at it.

If Dunn makes the roster as a k/p returner then LSH is more than likely gone.
