Mainly because no one is in the locker room and knows what the game plan was. No one can point to one specific thing that is the exact coaching issue. However, it isn't hard to see that when we get destroyed in the scripted plays, or when we have the longest streak of not scoring two first quarter TD's, and that the players (and former players) are kinda all starting to insinuate coaching (or scheme, which is essentially the same thing) is the problem... then you can put 2 and 2 together to make 4.

There's always going to be plays or personnel that are going to be instrumental in losses too. I never said it is all on coaching, and there are certainly things that we could have done to still win the game (Herbig dropping a pick 6, Rodgers missing an open Gainwell on the final play to throw the fade to MVS, etc.) but that doesn't mean that poor coaching didn't once again influence our loss. Mike Tomlin is 0-4-1 against teams that are 8 games under .500 in the last 5 games he's played them. Basically, later in the season, we lose to one of the worst teams in the league (generally while in the playoff hunt). How does this continue to happen? Again, it is easy to put 2 and 2 together.

It was reported that the Bears inquired about Tomlin in a trade. We turned them away. I don't know if a deal would have gotten done, so that is speculative, as is Ben Johnson (though we would've been the most attractive open job on the market. He would've been interested at least). However, there is a world where we traded Tomlin for Pick 10 and wind up with Jaxon Dart and have Ben Johnson as our coach right now. Its a fantasy world, but it could've easily happened. We certainly were dumb to not have traded Tomlin away in hindsight, though the Bears are quite happy, as it would be hard to imagine that Tomlin would have the same success that Johnson has had in Chicago.

    For you it is coaching.

I see the same game and have a different set of pre-existing assumptions. I see not poor coaching but other things as the driving factors in the losses.

Just because we believe something to be true, does not mean it is.

I could be wrong that it is a talent and execution issue by below the line players. You could be wrong that it is coaching. The refusal of the "Fire Tomlin" chorus to even contemplate let alone acknowledge that other explanations are possible or even probable indicates that the argument is more dogmatic than evidence based.

I think your last statement is true on both sides of the aisle... I think I even referenced that in one of the posts I made in our back and forth on this. They make excuses that pander to their desires or beliefs (whether its pro or anti - Tomlin). I can agree that just because something looks to be true, doesn't mean its true... but the likelihood of it not is pretty low. I can also agree that just because coaching appears to be a major problem, it doesn't mean that it is the only problem.

The scripted plays thing has spanned nearly a decade in big games. There isn't much to argue about. It is much more likely that we got out coached on those plays than different roster combinations over the past near-decade all have the same execution issues. This one is hard to point to anything other than the coaches.

More players and former players have been vocal over the past couple years addressing issues with scheme, coaching, and culture. These things generally don't happen in situations where the coaching is sound. It is speculative to a degree, but hard to ignore.

Also, going 0-4-1 in a stretch against teams that are 8 games under .500 is a rough stat too. Sorry, but that is a definitive coaching issue. Players can coast and play down, but its on the coaches to game plan their players into giving

Coaching isn't 100% of the issue. It will never be, because really good rosters can overcome shady coaching to a certain extent. However, I think it is naive to turn a blind eye to the pretty obvious issues in our coaching and preparation.

I will grant all that. I just think that of the Steelers problems, coaching is lower on the list than talent.

Canada was below the line required to even get a chance in the NFL. One of the worst coaching hires of all time. Just abysmal.

For the former players things, most of them are dudes with an axe to grind that when pressed for specifics have nothing to say. I am skeptical of individuals who can not provide details to back their claims.

And I was listening to the post game show and Charlie Batch said he always puts most of the blame on the players because they're the ones on the field.

Doesn't Tomlin have a no-trade clause? If so - even in this fantasy land, this would've never happened.

I'm not saying there isn't holes in the talent area too (We need a WR2 like nobody's business), but what is the excuse for the teams in the mid 2010's with the Killer B's? Idk. I think we aren't far off in what we're thinking, you're just more willing to blame the players more and I am more willing to put more blame on the coaching. I still think that we need some freshness to the organization in the coaching dept. If Tomlin was going to win us a playoff game, he would've at some point the past 9 years. I'd rather get another talented young guy and see if we can turn them into a great coach. Tomlin was great 10-15 years ago... I don't think he is anymore. We might miss on our hire, but we aren't getting anywhere but a barely above .500 record and no playoff wins with what we have... its worth a shot to try to better our organization. Just my opinion of course.

Discussing the 2010s and now is discussing two entirely separate issues. They’re not really comparable.

To me it seems like folks are primarily upset that the Ben era Steelers didn’t win 2 more trophies. And they’re still complaining.

So given you are blaming lack of talent, who exactly is in charge of getting talent and developing talent?
We have had players come and go, coordinators come and go, new GM. Still only one common denominator.
But keep insulting others and keep pining for a HC that has won 1 Superbowl lost 1 Super Bowl and only has playoff wins in 4 seasons of a 19 season career. Plus, never had a non losing season, to which I say is remarkable.
    Yeah it’s not the coaching.

You know who has a lot to do with talent in terms of drafting players, bringing in free agents and then coaching players up over time? Ill give you two guesses…

Mike Tomlin's Playoff History By Year
Here's the real look of Mike Tomlin's playoff history as the head coach of the Steelers, just to put his ineptitude into perspective:

    2007 - (10-7) - WC (L) vs Jacksonville
    2008 - (12-4) - Div. Rd. (W) vs SD; AFCCG (W) vs. Baltimore; SB (W) vs. Arizona
    2009 - (9-7) - Missed Playoffs
    2010 - (12-4) - Div. Rd. (W) vs. Baltimore; AFCCG (W) vs. NYJ; SB (L) vs. GB
    2011 - (12-4) - Div. Rd. (OTL) vs. Denver
    2012 - (8-8) - Missed Playoffs
    2013 - (8-8) - Missed Playoffs
    2014 - (11-5) - WC (L) vs. Baltimore
    2015 - (10-6) - WC (W) vs. Cincinnati; Div. Rd. (L) vs. Denver
    2016 - (11-5) - WC (W) vs. Miami; Div. Rd. (W) vs. KC; AFCCG (L) vs. NE
    2017 - (13-3) - Div. Rd. (L) vs. Jacksonville
    2018 - (9-6-1) - Missed Playoffs
    2019 - (8-8) - Missed Playoffs
    2020 - (12-4) - WC (L) vs. Cleveland
    2021 - (9-7-1) - WC (L) vs. KC
    2022 - (9-8) - Missed Playoffs
    2023 - (10-7) - WC (L) vs. Buffalo
    2024 - (10-7) - WC (L) vs. Baltimore

So, over 18 years in Pittsburgh, Tomlin is 8-11 in the playoffs. Of those 8 wins, 3 came in 2008, 2 in 2010, 2 in 2016, 1 in 2015. So, in 18 years, Tomlin has either missed the playoffs, or lost in the first game, in 14 of them. That's absolutely mediocre coaching, especially given the insane talent that he had for a majority of those 18 years. And look at some of those teams he's lost to. Jacksonville twice, Tim Tebow's Denver, Cleveland. He barely scraped by Alex Smith's KC thanks to Chris Boswell. He scraped by Cincinnati by the Bengals own stupidity. I have no idea how this man has any supporters left.

Absolutely pathetic. And the supporters will blame it on everyone but him even though over 20 years it’s how many different players? How many different assistants? But only one constant…..

It’s an upside down world we live in today
    What’s wrong
    Is right
    Left means right
    Up is now down
I know if I performed at my business like this
    I wouldn’t have a business
I personally don’t dislike Magic Mike
But with these results as a HC
    Not very good
    And excuses excuses excuses
Nobody takes responsibility for their actions
Esp if they mess up or do bad
Not my fault it’s such and such’s fault

The post by this guy is to highlight the missed opportunity to hit Gainwell (and it was) but check out the second replay, it really shows how bad that DPI on MVS was.

Since 2013, John Harbaugh is 4-6 in the playoffs. He and Tomlin mirror each other somewhat.

When did we lose the ability to develop WR?!?!?

We are using scrap pile players and sitting drafted ones.

Without a QB no one is winning diddly poo.

stopped being able to develop WRs when you no longer had a first ballot HOF QB throwing to them.
