Who would you keep ... Dwyer or Redman

Who would you keep, Dwyer vs. Redman?

 

I took Dwyer, simply because he's younger.

I also believe they will both be on the roster this season.

 

Who's the odd man out overall? We know Bell is a shoe-in and we signed LSH. So do you think Batch might get cut?

 

How much "actual" cap money (if any) could be saved by cutting one of them, and could that be carried forward to 2014?

 

I keep Dwyer. Love Redman but he's just never going to be more than a short yardage specialist. Dwyer has the upside to be a big part of a 1-2 combo along with Bell, and ultimately I think Dwyer is our starter week 1.

 

i took redman... mostly because he has more heart and stays in good condition.. dwyer appears out of shape and not able to go a whole game..

 

Voted to keep both, as i think we should, but if forced to pick one i'd probably go with Dwyer. Redman looks like the safer bet tbh but Dwyer looks like he has some untapped potential and more upside.

 

I voted to keep Dwyer (no surprise to my MB compatriots) but there is a contingency. I vote we keep Dwyer contingent upon his mental attitude and physical readiness going into and throughout tranining camp. I believe that if he is in peak physical condition and has his head screwed on straight he is clearly the more talented RB of the two. He's got one last shot as far as I'm concerned. I hope he doesn't blow it!

 

Keep both.

Dwyer's the better running back. If he has his stuff together and is in shape and doing his best, I think he's the bigger threat back there on standard running plays.

With Redman, you don't have to worry about any of that stuff. He'll be in shape and motivated and studying hard. He's also an elite short yardage guy, and can pass protect. But I don't want him as an every down back.

Regardless, you don't lose Redman. He provides a valuable service no matter who else is on the team. Dwyer you keep "if he has his stuff together." He can push Bell and be a decent backup. Hell, we still haven't seen him reach his full potential, so if he does that he could even hold off Bell for awhile.

I agree that his weight concerns this year were overblown, and in addition he's had time to shed it. I think we'll see the best he's got this year. If you HAVE to choose, keep Redman, because Bell is here to start. Dwyer is a competitor to start, not a complement to a starter like Redman.

 

I voted for Redman just because you know what you are going to get from him all the time, which is his 100% best effort. His ceiling might be a lot lower than Dwyer but I am not convinced we will ever see his true potential.

Honestly I think they will both make the roster and you will see Batch probably be the odd man out.

 

I voted keep both....Bell, Redman, and Dwyer will all see carries this year.

If one has to be cut...I guess I cut Redman....if one has to be traded...I trade Dwyer.

I think the RB battle isn't necessarily as clear cut as many do. The key to making a roster is knowing how you are going to use the guys. Are they a starter? Special teams player? Maybe they are youth you are just carrying until they develop some more but don't expect to really play. So how does that apply to this roster.

Bell, is a given to be on the roster. He will determine his own playing time. Pass protection will be the key. He will either be someone who gets carries or someone who may not get a jersey on Sunday as I doubt he will take special teams snaps.

LSH is a guy who I think has a role. He is the 3rd down back used in clear passing situations. As much as I think he makes the roster, I think since his salary is low he could be cut if he is outplayed by others. That being said, I expect him to have the 3rd down passing situation role and be on special teams.

Redman. He is clearly a very good short yardage back. That is a role I think he could play for us no problem. I don't honestly remember if he can play special teams or not, but he will have to earn his spot.

Dwyer. Here is a guy who I truly think has the talent as a runner to be a #1 runner in this league. An all-purpose guy. The reality is I don't think he has the drive or the desire to be one. I don't think he fits in either of the roles that Redman or LSH do, so his way onto the roster is most likely Bell not being ready to be the man yet. If that happens, Dwyer makes the roster as he is best suited to be an everydown back than anyone else. Now, if Bell is ready, Dwyer is fighting for his life. He doesn't do the other roles as well as those guys and Batch can play special teams something Dwyer doesn't do. He is in for a fight.

Batch. LSH may have taken his spot. His roster spot may be determined based on Bell. If Bell is ready, the coaches will need to make a choice. Do I want a short yardage back, a change of pace back, an all purpose who has underperformed, or a guy I can count on for special teams? That will be a tough choice.

McNeal I really like, but I think he will be destined for the PS. 4 of the 5 guys above will make the team. The question is, how do the coaches want the roster put together.

 

we could keep any combo of guys at this point. redman has a better yardage per touch then dwyer does, so i'm not sure why he's being pigeon holed as a short yardage only guy. I believe he will be healthy this year. I don't think he ever was last year.

dwyer is a gamble and you have just replaced that gamble with a much better back in the draft.

i'm also not counting batch out yet. he wasen't fully recovered last year from major knee surgery. I think we see a much better player this year.

I do like mcneal. if he and batch were placed on the PS, we may only keep two rb's and will J. active and keep one of those other wr's this year like plax for redzone use. that way they don't lose anybody for next year when plax and cotchery and sanders may be departing. it would allow woods or j.brown to be kept around (and get a year under their belt) to team with wheaton and AB next year.

LSH is not a shoe in. as I said batch may look much better then last year. I do think they want a guy or two with some wiggle to the outside on screens and sweeps and dumpoffs. that will be batch,LSH or mcneal.

no matter what, it's going to be a fun preseason to watch with a lot of make or break positions open, and the 1 year contract guys jobs on the line. there is going to be a lot of soul searching going on in the front office and coaching staff for the near future in placing players and replacing players.

oh to answer the question, I haven't picked yet. I like redman more than dwyer. mcneal,bell,batch or LSH would be interesting too. it also saves a lot of money if they cut both.

I don't think weight or desire will be an issue this (contract) year. Maybe he's got Albert Haynesworth Syndrome. Don't give him a big contract, but good for one year

I might go so far as to say he and Bell might split carries early on.

 

the blocking scheme will make for a different skillset with these guys. we really can't look at dwyer,batch and redman as in past years. which ones adapt better to this type of scheme is yet to be determined.

Which one? Well not the guy who has a habit of waving himself out that's for sure.

Bell was drafted to start. Let the rest fall where they may. Battle it out.

 

It wont be Redman or Dwyer that are released. You will see both on the 53 man roster. Bell is a given! Who gets cut is a guess at this point.

They may also want to consider who can fill in the best as a "backup fullback", perhaps allowing Will Johnson to spend some time at TE until Heath comes back. I sure don't want them using a roster spot on David Johnson.

I voted keep one but no preference. Dwyer has a lot of potential, and I think will surprise folks this year. Redman is more of a proven commodity at this point, but a lower ceiling.

Thinking about it, the "keep one, no preference" option is really the opt-out answer isn't? I feel ashamed for not having more of an opinion on the matter.

 

No, it was more the "cap saving" answer. I thought that there might be a 1.3mil savings for cutting one of them and that it could be carried over to next year; TTF later confirmed that. Of course if both are kept, it would increase the odds of being able to sign one of them next year at the vet minimum.

 

I like the save the money thing. I've said that before, but we ended up with more then first thought and add one of these guys and batch to it and we could be in line for a cut vet player signing this year or just get some needed extensions done.

we also have to sign the guy that's going to be OK with being the backup to bell.
