Yeah we went from what the 12 or so ranked pass defense under Horton to two years in a row being number 1 under Lake I honestly think it's going to be a closer race for the DC job between him and butler then people think. The thing butler has going for him is the rooneys have already told him he was the next man up.

Have they really? I think that's everyone's assumption but do we know for sure that they've promised it to Butler. I think the forgone conclusion was that Whiz would be the next HC of the Steelers, but when a young Mike Tomlin came to town the Rooneys recognized that they may have something special there. I think the Rooneys may think twice before letting Carnell Lake get out of town.

And with Ray Horton, it wasn't necessarily our ranking against the pass, it just seemed that the young defensive backs we had (and at times even the older ones) just made so many darn mental errors which led to big plays at the most inopportune times. Horton did not coach the DBs up the way Lake has. What do you expect from a former Bungle, though.

I think when they denied him from interviewing with a team that I can't recall they said it was because he is the next man up. I could be wrong though.

It was more than fan speculation. One or more of the local news outlets reported that the team denied a request by the Cardinals to interview him after the Super Bowl loss. Don't quote me, but the reason given was that he had just renewed his contract that year, and that they had a gentleman's agreement that he would be the next DC. I could probably dig up an article or two later.

I'd be interested to see those articles which implies that the Rooneys have "promised" him the job. It may not be right, but I'm sure more "promises" are broken in the NFL than in Washington, DC.:smiley1:

They have retained him twice when it looked like he was about to leave, as I said before, I don't think they are making that effort just so they don't lose their LB's coach. If they did promise him the job, which seems they have, and then passed over him for the DC position, I would lose some respect for the Rooneys if they renegaded on that. I would of course get over it, because Lake seems like the real deal ;)

I don't think Whiz had any kind of agreement. He just seemed like the logical choice, and people made that assumption. If they don't hire Butler, they'll be going back on their word, not just making an unexpected move like the Tomlin hire. I don't see the Rooneys doing that.

Lake is young. I'm worried too that he'll leave to be a DC elsewhere when LeBeau leaves, but who knows? He is certainly familiar with Pittsburgh and probably loves it, so maybe he'll want to stick around. How does Assistant Defensive Coordinator sound? :smiley1:

I never cared for horton either. a big difference is carnell played in this defense. we were also one of the few teams that still ran it as of a few short years ago. carnell knows the in's and outs of it.

you also have to remember we have been drafting and signing guys a lot more capable of playing man to man more then zone and now being able to mix those coverages better then we had before. carnell has a lot to work with and is very familiar with this defensive scheme.

I think he'd make a good DC, but that takes a lot of his hands on , off.

People, Carnell Lake is just not a capable DC, he maybe your next HC.
I can hope atleast. I think the Rooney's have their man right here in front
of them, Like Mac said when he was playing, he was the most intelligent
person on the defense, and when Rod went down and he converted to CB
WITHOUT MISSING A BEAT what can I say, I think he can think out of the box
unlike someone we know and has so much upside, the Rooney's will never let him get out of here.

Those 2 were awesome to watch! I don't know how those teams didn't win at least one SB!
