Teams were 0-30 on passes over 30 yards against the Steelers even more impressive 30 attempts was the third most.

Yeah I knew we were good in stopping the big plays but not that good.

It took me by surprise, too. From the ESPN article:

I knew we were great at stopping deep balls, but that is better than I would have guessed. 0 for 30 is really impressive. Especially with Will Allen and Ryan Mundy filling in for half the season.

I wonder if this will change any of those minds that claim our safeties struggle in coverage.

Yeah, I read a story last season about us being the best at defending the long ball but I don't remember a stat included, pretty impressive.

    That IS shocking! :applaud:
Not bad, for a team who has problems pressuring the quarterback/ covering recievers downfield!
Not that I would even know how to go about digging into it, but I wonder who the QB/Rcvrs were, that attempted those throws?
That`s impressive, no matter who they were, tho...
    GO STEELERS!:yeehaw:

Yeah but it's that very reason that we get torn up with the underneath stuff, Steelers hate to get beat by big plays, they force you to beat them with short stuff, the bend but don't break defense. I'm not complaining, works pretty well, just have to get pressure on the QB now and we'll have a pretty stifling defense.

i don' t know that Tebow completed any pass that went 30 yds IN THE AIR in that playoff game, and that's what the stat is if I understand right. So its a little bit deceiving. The game winning OT pass for 80 yds,
maybe went 20-25 yds in the air.

YOU know, i'm sure your right. it seems to me that's how it went but IKE GETS BURNED everytime
i'm just in the mood to mess with STEEL.
that is a great stat and I hope our team can do it on a regular basis ,even without our bigname players

Actually, I'm not so sure it's a "great stat" at all. Ok, the Steelers were best at 0 for 30, and 30 attempts were near the most in the league. But how do I interpret this? Who was average? who was worst? I can't imagine even the worst D gives up 50% on long passes like that. Suppose worst was 8 for 20, the difference between best and worst would be one long pass every other game. The difference between best and average might be less than one long pass per month. That hardly seems like something that costs you alot of games. Hell, the difference between being first and average in personal fouls probably has a bigger impact.

it strikes me as a stat that seems more impressive than it really is.

An earlier post stated the worst team was the Texans at 48.4% ( 15/31)

I hate to be the wet blanket on this party so I will say first WOW Awesome Stat ( Thorn058 then does an awesome air kick to demonstrate his excitement) Now back to wet blanketville. As impressive as this stat is the team still ended up 8-8. They were still giving up first down completions on third and long and still allowed scoring drives on passes under 30 yards. SO while the stat does show they were really good in one area they were mediocre in others. This reminds of the fans who were super psyched about Ben throwing for over 4000 yards that one season and how great it was. Sure it was a personal milestone for Ben and a great individual achievement but beyond that did it help the overall goals for the team? So yeah awesome stat shows that things are looking better in the secondary, still lots of work to do and short yardage passing to start stopping.

They were 6th in points allowed per game, still amazes me that people are putting 8-8 on the defense. There were so many factors that went into our record last season but the defense was the least to blame, they did their job. We were the #1 ranked defense, when you average 19.6 points allowed, blame falls on the offense.

I'm not putting the blame on the defense BF, I am saying while the stat is impressive taken in context of a subpar season it is hardly something to brag about. To me it ranks right above all the guys making it up and down the stairs to the locker room at Heinz field without mishap. Yup it is great but at the end of the day the the record is what it is. Scouring the stats for a nugget of good news doesn't suddenly make last season a 12-4 season with a successful playoff run. It just means they can focus on other areas this year and get back to work. So these aren't the droids you are looking for move along

It's a great stat, don't know what one has to do with the other. We didn't make the playoffs so that means we can't be proud about anything good the team did? Not one completion over 30 yards? I'm impressed, 8-8 doesn't diminish it to me, especially as I said, the defense didn't hold much blame on our record. I don't think Steel posted it to absolve us of an 8-8 season, just simply pointing out a great accomplishment, just another thing to be proud about our defense as far as I am concerned.

Exactly I wasn't say the 8-8 didn't matter but I'm proud of everything this team does well.

I agree. No part of our team was satisfactory last year. If it had been, we'd have had a better record and made the playoffs.

The legend of Carnell Lake continues to grow. Carnell was a MASTER at not giving up the big play during his career and he's passed that along as a coach to his players. He was always the smartest guy ON THE FIELD and he demands that his defensive backs not only play physically but also intelligently.

Carnell Lake SHOULD BE the next defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers!

carnell simply knows how to teach how this defense is supposed to operate. DLB still runs the show.

And he teaches it quite well. I thought Ray Horton was a pitiful excuse for a DB coach and that our DBs actually regressed during his tenure in Pittsburgh. Thankfully, Lake was hired and our defensive backfield has picked it up several notches. It's been especially nice to see our young DBs take their game to a higher level under Lake's tutelage. DL may run the show, but Carnell Lake is on track, IMHO, to be one heckuva DC one day. I just hope it's in the Burgh!
