LOL, I actually thought that when I typed that. "Well someone feels the need to resort to voodoo against him."

I went through a pulmonary embolism and that was my first thought. Will be interesting to hear what this is.

He wasn’t drawing this kind of attention and teams also get the ball out faster against the Steelers than they do any other team to counter their pass rush.

“Good” players don’t gets schemed this way. Great players do.

I’m not sure this was related to being sick.

Sometimes people are fooled by reputation. Great players produce. Watt has only done that sporadically this season.

Exactly! I live in Iggle land and they want TJ so bad. They don't really follow the Steelers but his rep follows him.

As for me I have this pipe dream we make the Playoffs and TJ comes alive one last time.

Watt would probably still excel there. Probably excel most places that could figure out how to take the quick passes away and use him in a manner that makes it more difficult to chip him so much.

It’s not just Watt they need to figure out how to counter the quick passing game, its for the sake of their entire pass rush, teams do it agains the Steelers at a higher rate than any other team.

Watt has been double teamed, chipped and schemed around for years. He just isn’t as good as he used to be which isn’t any great knock on him all players regress as they age to a degree. The issue was the contract and he’s not even close to living up to that I’m not sure how anyone can deny it based on his numbers. Now if we want to blame coaching as well you know where I fall on that thinking but from what I hear it’s Watt who doesn’t want to move around.

All that being said I hope he is OK at the end of the day he is a father and son before being a football player.

To attest to how good he is, no team leaves him 1:1 and unaccounted for.
Even if the play goes the other way, they have to chip him as he will run the RB down as we saw a few times with Baltimore.
I do think he's not the same TJ.

Offenses do get smart and the Watt's and Bosa's and other like them, do get extra attention.
But do think we should have let some other team give him that contract... we are not just a TJ away from a SB.

I do think TJ is declining.

But I also believe (without checking) that teams are throwing faster against us than they have before. And that trend has been happening for a few seasons.

It would be nice to see some alternate universe where TJ had his career with an offense that could consistently have 10 point leads. Imagine him in a situation like D Freeney had with Manning in Indy. How many sacks would he have if teams had to throw against us / hold the ball longer trying to get more air yards?

Same is true for Garrett, but F the Browns.

I agree on all counts. He is still good enough that opponents tailor their offensive game planning to keep him from wrecking the game. But, he’s seemingly no longer good enough to wreck the game despite that game planning. I say “seemingly” because he was that good as recently as last season before his injury vs. the Eagles.

The contract was just too huge for a guy on the wrong side of 30 in a position where players typically start declining at that age. I wonder if our owners, who are obviously loyal to a fault sometimes, were overvaluing him as a “legacy” player.

I'm not a fan doing this in a thread where we don't know the extent of his condition.

But bro, teams do go against him 1 on 1. He used to be a beast of a force where there was 2 on 1 at times, but this year, no.

Also no team is going to give more than a third. He's top 20 in sacks, however he's being paid insanely. He should be up there with Garrett with 20 sacks, but sadly he's only totaled 7.

It's no secret how I feel about the front office, in particular Omar and I leave his actions to speak for themselves.
Both TJ and Cam were extended 1 contract too many.
I absolutely am a huge TJ fan to the hilt but there comes a time when he can hurt the team more than he can help. (applies to any player)
It's just business, the modern NFL.
We probably could have gotten some decent picks for at the right time.

I am probably among the most addicted of TJ Watt fans. I hate to see such an injury.
Baltimore did try to leave him 1:1 and paid for it, he went down the line and threw RB's for a loss or min gain. The OC finally got the message.
So, yeah, some teams will flirt with that theory while running away from him.
And it is not wrong, he is not the same game wrecking manimal he was... but it remains a roll of the dice. It's a little like playing with short fuse firecrackers... you can often do quite a few successfully but the inevitable is just the inevitable.

Those weeks that Jalen Carter can play, the Eagles can create enough heat inside to make someone like Watt more effective. The Steelers don't have that. They were under the delusion that he could just wreck games no matter what like he did two years ago. Those days are gone, but losing him would still be a serious blow to a defense that was already bad.

Exactly. Just because he isn't what he was doesn't mean he can't still do some serious damage.

I hear you. It feels a little weird talking about all this when we don't know his condition, but that's what we're all doing.

The time to trade him would have been before they gave him that huge contract.

He was still damn good before the injuries hit last season, but I think he was already showing some decline. Then again, that was decline from being the best defensive player in the NFL the previous year.

They are doing it more this season than any other season as well as getting the ball out in like 2 seconds. Not sure what you guys think any pass rusher is supposed to do about that. Hes obviously not as great as he once was but how teams are scheming not just him but the entire pass rush is the biggest issue.

The contract is a separate argument.

Ugh…. I know that this is still speculation, but it’s informed speculation by one of most respected sports medical experts out there and is therefore based on an understanding of what the indicators could mean. Man I hope he’s wrong.
