Tomlin was spot on about this defense being historic.

I just have trouble reconciling keeping Austin around other than to take up some space or maybe go pick up some Hoagies for lunch.

 

My concern is that they will just make Austin the scapegoat and not make the necessary changes.

 

I can dig it.
That is also my fear as they have done just that, Matt Canada comes to mind.

 

To be clear, Matt Canada deserved to be fired and so does Austin. Firing them just doesn't entirely fix the problem.

 

Austin is a major part of the problem also

Tomlin couldn't adjust his pants at Half-Time.

 

There is an underlying red alert few people are talking about. What talent evaluators do the Steelers have that were looking at tape and deciding that Slay, Thornhill, Clark all were worth signing to a contract? Two of them not even on this 'historic' defense now. Rooney must be thrilled paying $10M+ for nothing.

 

The thing is, we have no idea who is listening to who. Is Tomlin listening to his scouts? Is Khan listening to Tomlin? Is Tomlin listening to Khan? How much input is Rooney putting in these days? All I know is things are a mess, and they never were before.

What I do know is the on field play is on Tomlin as he's the coach

 

This is Tomlin's team always has been, he's been here 19 years, of course he's pulling all the levers and has acquired all the power and influence. Any other reading of the situation just makes no sense, and as such he is 90% resposnbile for the continued abject failure of this team.

 

Maybe in game adjustments but there is no such thing as half time adjustments.

 

Steelers don't ever score more than 7 points in the first quarter. They turn it on in 2Q and then choke in the last 7 minutes of the game.

 

And many other coaches and coordinators.

 

While Khan definitely has to shoulder blame here, make no mistake that this roster has Tomlins imprint on it; quite a big one at that. For that matter, I could argue that has been the case since 2022; Colbert's final season. So many notable Free Agents have come to Pittsburgh. Only one of them has panned out; Isaac Seumalo.


Coincidentally enough, Seumalo may have been more of an Andy Weidl influence than it would have been a Tomlin one. As for the likes of Patrick Peterson, Patrick Queen, trading George Pickens for D.K. Metcalf, trading Minkah for Jalen Ramsey and nabbing Darius Slay to name a few?! That is heavily on Tomlin. Remember, he did say this defense is going to do "Historic Things" and he was the captain of that ideal during this off-season.



Turns out he was right. This Defense is historic... historically, comically bad. One more game allowing 30+ points and one more game blowing a halftime lead will be Franchise Records. For that matter, dating back to 1982 I believe, both will be NFL Records.



Khan isn't exempt from this but he shouldn't bear the heavy brunt of the blame here. Tomlin should and will.

 

How often do we see him chatting on the sidelines? I imagine the locker room isn’t much different.
