Will his gaurenteed money ($16.4 mil) count against the Pats salary cap if he is suspended/convicted ?? :hmmm:

That's a tough question to answer due to the different scenarios that could play out. I can say, however, that if he is unable to play in the NFL (by that I mean incarcerated or otherwise out of the league) the Patriots are protected and can recoup the money they've given him in the form of salary cap credits in upcoming years. I say "given him", because he's already gotten that whopping 12 million and change signing bonus.

    Ok thanks.

Say if a player retires, a team would owe him nothing for future years, but would have to eat any "dead" money carried over from prior years, correct?
Or, does that "dead" money go away when the player retires?

I think it counts against the cap. I think that's how it happens with Vick.

When a player retires, it's treated the same way as when a player is released. Generally speaking, the team would be off the hook for any future base salaries due, as well as roster bonuses, but would be responsible for any Signing and Option Bonuses that were yet to count against the cap. I apologize if it seems like I'm trying to avoid directly answering your question, it's just that the wording is giving me a little trouble, because dead money isn't carried over from prior years, it's prorated money that hasn't been used yet.

The straight answer is- dead money doesn't go away- it gets accelerated and the team is on the hook for it.

I just saw a special report on Fox News that said the police have said that he's a MAJOR accessory at the least. Are we looking at another Ray Lewis situation?

I think this might actually be worse. I read somewhere this morning(espn?) that the surveillance system at his house had been intentionally destroyed and when the police asked for his cell it was turned in destroyed as well. Of course money can do a lot of things and one of them is hiring a team of awesome lawyers.

I hope not. Or it'll be swept under the rug, never mentioned again by the press, and they'll start acting like he's some sort of spiritual leader and holy man. The best to ever play his position AND an all around good man. :frustrated:

Yeah. Also while ago on Fox News they said that his lawyer LITERALLY handed the police a cell phone that had been LITERALLY smashed to pieces! What an arrogant punk if that turns out to be true. He also called in a professional cleaning crew to clean his house and that looks very suspicious.

YEAH!!!! HAAHAAHAH!!!!! I just saw while ago where they said that when he came in to the league some teams passed on him because he had ties to some gangs. I don't like the guy anyway. I can't stand when people cover themselves in tattoos and that dude just looks like a thug to me. Man I bet Belichik is FURIOUS TOO!!

Thanks again, sorry but the contract info/terminology is fuzzy to me to say the least. LOL

The "dead money" I was actually refering to the when a contract is "restuctured" and the cap hit is spread over the remaining contract years.

Ahh, gotcha. Same answer. The player's restructured salary gets rolled up into a Signing Bonus, which he gets as a lump sum up front. The team is on the hook for it, but gets to spread the cap impact out equally across the remaining life of the contract.

You'd think it'd be inevitable that the league comes down on him, regardless of the outcome of this. His behavior alone is 'conduct detrimental to the integrity of the league' or however they word their policy. Even if he wasn't directly involved, this kid needs a wake up call...

Man I agree 100%! This is really one of the things that annoys me the most about the draft process and the NFL definitely shares some blame in that code of conduct as well because they ALLOW these dudes in the league to start with. They knew this kid was a bad seed to start with. Ray Lewis also had a record when he came in to the league. As did Pac-Man Jones. I would say they had a hunch about Chris Henry too. I wish the NFL would impose a rule upon itself that says everytime they draft a guy with a record and he goes on to do even more stupid crap that they have to donate X amount of dollars to charity. With these morons getting drafted today they would probably be able to find a cure for cancer with that money.

Yeah and apparently the neighbors heard gunshots about the time that he was getting home. But, ya know, it was probably just some redneck doing target practice, in an upscale neighborhood, AT NIGHT! LOL. What defense can this guy possibly offer?

I bet Gisele wouldn't have been talking smack about all those receivers dropping balls in the SB if she had known that one of them would shoot her. LOL.

What a waste, the opportunity he was given to become a role model for kids is on the reverse now. I hope some kid don't think he is cool with his BS behavior.
