I most certainly didn't post this information to get agreement from anyone. Obviously, a main premiss of boards like these, allow people to make their opinions and insight relating to specific topics. I have read pros and cons on this board concerning Jones and due to my personal involvement with the OU program, I thought it could be helpful to others. I know the reply was an attempt at levity. I broke down the Justin Brown pick a few weeks ago, in the draft room, and had a good discussion relative to that. Other than the original site, this is the only board I've ever posted or read for that matter. Now, having to reside in "Bears" territory and all of their maniacal idiotic fans, I do have a handful of SteelerNation to converse with. I was hoping this board could help give some relief, discussing topics about the greatest franchise ever. All is good, I guess this reply was something I would have expected from a Bears fan. Thanks for the input.
For what it's worth, Ryan Broyles does have the NCAA record for career catches and I'm sure you know who his QB was. Jones also comes from a system that employs the shot gun or direct snap 80% of the time which lends itself more toward the Cheatroits than the Steelers. Can he be Ben's backup or eventual replacement? I'm pulling for him, but not sold on it.

I think some people consider quarterbacks to be busts even if taken in the 7th or not drafted at all. I don't feel that way, and am generally happy if late round picks make the team.

That said, I draw the line at the 5th round. I don't want them to be a roll of the dice. I expect my 4th rounders to make the team and contribute heavily, relatively soon, and at some point become starters. Obviously the QB position is a little different because he can't be rotated in or play special teams, so in a way it's like he has to make up for that by being even better. And although some people out there (Todd McShay and Mike Tomlin) think we got great value, a lot don't, and a lot think it was a massive reach. So this guy better be good, because we all have a list of guys we'd have taken instead.

It's probably unfair, but this guy will be looked at under a bigger microscope than most 4th rounders.

Iowa meant no harm, he's the least confrontational member here, he adds levity to just about all his comments. I didn't want any QB taken yet, if they were set on taking a QB this draft, I would have preferred Dysert in the 6th or Bray who went undrafted. I do think Jones has a lot of promise though.

I'm sure some of it's on me, I appreciate your information on this. As far as the QB goes, Jones, at some point was rated a first round pick before he opted not to come out. Not sure who had the most influence in drafting Landry, ( Colbert, Tomlin, or Haley ) but maybe they thought getting him in the 4th round this year was a good value. I tend to agree with you that there were more pressing issues and could of had either of the two you mentioned late or after the draft. Hopefully he'll work hard and develop into the type of QB the coaching staff wants.

maybe it's just that iowa vs. indiana big 10 thing. LOL oh, i'm from oHIo, you know the only undefeated team in D1 last year.:smiley1: sorry thought i'd just throw that in there. LOL;) they met with all those guys and the kid from tulane. jones was the best pick of that bunch as far as they thought and i agree. i thought if he dropped into the 5th though, but still a good pick. he's got time.

The bottom line for me would be this. How many people here think that Landry Jones is the way of the future? ESPECIALLY considering that so many people think he's a product of the Haley system and so many seem to think that Haley won't be here for a long time. I don't want Ben to retire but one thing that IS gonna be interesting to me is when he does what kind of qb will Tomlin get. I think ultimately it might even wind up being that Tomlin truly separates himself from Cowher by getting a franchise guy much quicker than Cowher did and actually making that a priority. That's my one knock on Cowher is that he never seemed to want to get a truly great franchise guy. It's gonna be interesting to see if Tomlin will say about his next qb that might have some bad habits "well that's just so and so being so and so" like he seems to do with Ben. Or will he really "coach the dude up" and make him in his own image the way Belichik has with Brady?
