I know some on here were born and raised in Pittsburgh as I was, thus, a birth right.

How about you guys who were not born in the Pittsburgh area? I know some, like me, forced it on our kids. My son has never been to Pittsburgh but is all Steelers while living in Chiefs fandom.

Anytime I see a Pirate hat I know they are Steeler fans but I've seen tons of Steeler hats that have zero interest in the other two teams in the city. A lot I talk to have never been to the Burgh.

I think some were captured by the bad ass 70's teams and became a fan for life.???????

I was about 7 years old and noticed this black and yellow team was on TV all the time.... we had just got our first color TV. And they always seemed to win. We only had 4 channels back then (before cable) and even though I lived about 6 hours from Pittsburgh... our local CBS and NBC stations would show their games. 79 season.... I chose my team. I chose wisely.

After seeing those 70s team on tv the uniforms and the way they played defense was the reason I became a fan.

Ditto. The menacing B&G pulled me in back in ‘75 or so. When we played football at recess in elementary school it was always Steelers vs. Cowboys, and the Cowboys looked all prissy to me with the silver and the star, and that annoying shift in unison that their offensive line would do when they got set. Anyone remember that little bit of cuteness from the 70’s Cowboys?

Edit. Here’s a video on the shift. I guess it had a football purpose, but to me as a kid it looked like a wussy line dancing type of thing that had no place in football.

Dad born and raised in Pittsburgh. He joined the military and the rest is history.

I've only lived in Pittsburgh for 1 year of my life, but have been back many times to visit relatives and go to games.

I grew up about an hour from Cleveland, and my dad was a big Indians and Browns fan. He would take me to Indians games regularly, but never had me watch football with him when I was little.

We had a family move to our area from Michigan and they started attending our church, and they happened to be Steelers fans. One of the kids was about a year older than me and we became good friends. He and his older brother are the ones that got me into football, so the Steelers were my introduction to the NFL through them, probably in the late 70s. I've been a Steelers fan since.

I was born in Chicago in the early 60s. When I was under 5yrs old, my childhood best friend and his family was from Pittsburgh. They talked about the Steelers and watched them when they could. This stuck in my head as I started to know and learn what football was. I've been hooked and a Steelers fan ever since. Unfortunately, I lost my buddy to cancer last year.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada. Growing up in the '70s there was a limited number of games to watch each week, and the Bills were the local team and were blacked out most home games. The teams who were usually on were the Steelers, Dolphins, Cowboys, and Raiders. Took to the Steelers right away and never turned back.

When my son was 7 we moved to a new house. My wife asked him what kind of room he wanted. I had a ton of signed photos and other memorabilia. I told him if he goes with a Steelers room I'd give to him for his walls and bring in an artist to do airbrush murals on his walls. Created a second generation fan for life. His first game in-person was the 2014 Colts game when Ben threw for 522 and 6 TDs for his 12th birthday - and he met Art II.

Born and raised in NJ. Super Bowl XIII was the first NFL game I remember watching. The week before the game, my brother was chanting Dallas #1 with most of the kids on the school bus. One kid next to me started saying the Steelers were better and rattling off defensive stats or something, so I joined in with him to annoy my brother. My brother got pissed and bet me a dollar that neither of us had. Rest is history.

Imprinted with them as a child when a friend of the family who was a fan had a full size helmet. Never saw one and my eyes went googly over the colors.

Never even been to Pit. :)

I'm from montana. We don't have pro sports teams there and have to borrow from other states. My brother and I have both been Steelers fans for our entire lives. My dad was a broncos fan. My mom was a cowboys fan. My sister is a dolphins fan. My niece is a Seahawks fan. Her husband is an eagles fan.

No idea how we picked our teams. They just have always been our teams for as long as I can remember.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh and moved away. My son was born the day the Steelers beat the Rats 38-7 with Deebo dominating. At about 5 he said he was a Bengals fan because of the other daycare kids. I threatened to throw him out of the house. Working on the 2 grandkids now from my daughter and her Vikings fan husband. It’s gonna be a Black N Gold Xmas for those toddlers. I only kid on some of this.

I've told the story on here numerous times but, in a nutshell, it was because the Chargers traded my favorite player and I was so pissed, I cursed them! At the time, 1972, the only time we got to see the Steelers on TV was when they played the Chargers or MNF. Once I saw them, I liked the colors and loved the defense. I jumped on the bandwagon and haven't looked back!

Grew up in Canada near Toronto.

Football wasn't a huge thing when / where I grew up so I didn't really start following the NFL seriously until I was in my early teens. Bills were the closest team, but I didn't really like them. Probably because they lost 4 SBs in a row. And while I wasn't following the NFL closely at that time, it's kind of hard to miss that.

Steelers were on TV a lot. This was the Blitzburgh era. Cowher was just hired. I've always loved defensive minded teams in sports. And Lloyd was such a badass.

A bet with my older brother on the SB who was a Cowboys fan. I was a kid so asked my dad what to do and he looks confidently at me and with a nod says Steelers. Won that bet and the rematch :taunt:

From there the NFL films with that narration and music just sucked me in. The Steelers with those uniforms were just so bad ass.

My family is from Youngstown, Ohio so split between the Steelers and Browns among the extended family. Luckily I was born in the 70s so the choice was easy. We moved to Raleigh, NC when I was 4 and the Redskins were the local team, so watched a lot of their games but always was a Steelers fan.

I was lucky enough to meet Bill Cowher when he moved here after retiring, as well as Willie Parker who also lives here. Pretty rare meeting Steelers 400 miles away lol.
