Watching Some Tape - Jarvis Jones

I know it's really hard to find time to track down game tape and sit and watch it, and as a result we forge opinions based on other people's opinions or a couple of highlight reels. I thought compiling real game film here might make it easier for people, as well as give us a thread to discuss each player. Hopefully by looking at these instead of highlight reels, we can get a more accurate picture of what these guys bring to the table. I love highlights, but only when I want to get pumped about a player, not when I want to really learn. Anyway, it's another thing to do to help last us through the summer.

My thoughts:

Pass rush - Because of opposing offenses, not always a lot of opportunities for standard edge rushing. Disappointed that he doesn't display a lot of "moves" or a consistent power rush - although he did flash a good power rush against Missouri and Boise State. Still, he finds a way to get to the QB a couple times per game, usually with burst off snap. Obviously his numbers are outstanding, but a fair number of those were not that impressive. Pretty good screen recognition, especially last year.

Run defense - Not half as bad in running game as I was led to believe. I thought this was supposed to be some glaring weakness. He beats lesser blockers easily and pursues backs well. I like the angles he takes. Good pass/run recognition skills. Sometimes overmatched by large/talented/multiple blockers, but even then is okay about getting himself in the right spot and forcing the play inside.

Tackling - Attacks the ball frequently, trying to cause fumbles on QBs, RBs, and receivers, especially when ball carrier is already being tackled by a teammate. In addition to the forced fumbles on record, there were a couple more he came up with that came after the play had been whistled dead. I generally like how he finishes plays; he can deliver the big hit. Sometimes goes for the hit instead of wrapping up, even when it doesn't even look like a good idea. Usually gets away with it, but won't as much in NFL. He's nowhere near Shamarko Thomas level of bad. It's just an occasional thing.

Speed - Doesn't look slow at all to me. A number of times I thought he looked pretty fast; it's easy to see why most scouts expected him to run in the 4.6-4.7 range. Definitely plays faster than his 40 time.

Coverage - Not much time in coverage, but looks comfortable enough there. He won't be Lawrence Timmons, but he should be as good or better than JH in coverage. Not worried at all about this.

Overall - Good hustle most of the time, but occasionally will lapse - his motor is overrated in my opinion. He was no slouch in 2012, but looked hungrier in 2011. Like Manti Te'o, he received criticism for his performance against Alabama. I thought even at his worst he wasn't that bad, and still made some big plays. At his best he was an absolute terror and in just an average game he was a huge headache for offenses. Like everyone says, will have to add power to deal with rushing NFL tackles, and standing them up in the running game. From his natural talent and reported so-so conditioning, this seems very possible if he steps up his game in the weight room. I don't see him overtaking Worilds as the starter this year, but there's no way he's not ready for 2014, so I hope we get him on the field for 5-10 snaps per game as a rookie, to get his feet wet and change things up for the pass rush. He has tons of experience on both sides, which makes him the ideal #3 in 2013.

 

Snack, thanks again for posting the videos. I don't think I really add much that you haven't already stated above. I will say that, personally, I think I might have been more impressed with his motor than you. I, too, thought he played well against the run, however, sometimes he over-pursued, taking himself out of the play. Definitely will have to bulk-up or he will continue to get pushed around. I thought he seemed pretty fast and way more athletic than I thought he was. You are right, not many opportunities to watch him in coverage but I think he will handle it. Overall, I like the pick and think he will do well if he adds muscle and take to coaching.

 

Thought I'd bump this up in case anyone besides Jim wanted to take a look. It's a lot of tape, but we're headed into the desert of the season now, so when you get thirsty, this'll be here (along with the other threads of every draft pick except Nick Williams).

 

I agree with what Jim said. He definitely needs to bulk up but, overall, I am happy with the pick.
