I think you’re confusing the GM with those that evaluate the talent on the field. He’s not their coach or scout. They give him the skinny on who should go and who should stay. His job is to make that happen. It is HIS job to make it happen in the best way possible. Objectively, that means , money, division, and yes replacement. But as the GM you’re not always given the best of circumstances. In fact, you’re at times given pretty bad deals to complete or even ones you disagree with, BUT you get it done and try not to sell the farm doing it.

    IMO

I actually agree. On one hand, I think he’s clearly better than late-Colbert in some areas. He’s more aggressive, he’s willing to trade, he’s not afraid to restructure or move money around, and the last few drafts look solid overall. He’s definitely brought a more modern, analytical feel to the front office.

But on the other hand… I’m starting to wonder about his overall roster-building vision.

Some of his moves feel like “let’s go all-in” — trading for Ramsey, signing Rodgers, restructuring deals to stay competitive — but then he leaves huge, obvious holes untouched. Two straight seasons with no real WR2 option, even though the offense is clearly suffocating without one. Then the secondary plan this year sold itself as clever value hunting, but most of those bets just didn’t hit. Thornhill, Slay, Echols… that’s a lot of misses in one area of the roster.

To me, Khan’s problem so far isn’t that he’s bad — it’s that he’s inconsistent. He nails the big moves, then gets too cute with the supporting pieces. And in today’s NFL, you can’t halfway-build a roster. If you’re going all-in, you have to actually finish the job.

I still think he can be the right GM long-term, but he’s got to show he can connect the dots between bold moves and complete roster construction.

Who has ownerships support and ear? I think it Tomlin more than Khan (who is relatively new to his role). Tomlin is the one who keeps getting extended despite his mediocre results, thats some solid loyalty and trust by the Rooneys. Tomlin wants to win now and silence the doubters, all these FA moves point to that.

Khan is so-so in the draft.

    Good at trades.

Bad at new contracts and getting fair value for the players on the 2nd contracts or more.

Like you said, he is mediocre.

A good GM would have solved our QB situation by now.

I think part of this is scheme and part of this is that Austin isn't a WR2. I think he's an average to above average WR3.

I wouldn't blame Kahn for the lack of WRs. It was clear from early on that Smith/Tomlin wanted to build a TE-centric offense knowing the OL would need help but also that they could be used in 13 personnel as receivers. Only the LAR run more 13 personnel than the Steelers. (Steelers also 7th in 12 personnel). Kahn did his part to get the TEs. Smith hasn't been able to build the offense he envisioned for Rodgers.
Steelers early down 13 personnel EPA is ranked 23rd. LAR early down 13 personnel EPA is ranked #1. That is the difference. Rams have made it work, Steelers not so much.

Jonu has been basically useless. We were told he would be just like another WR out there :roflmao:

Part of the point of hiring Khan as GM was that he had both experience managing the cap and scouting. A GM does have to be able to judge the value of players with input from scouts and coaches. His job is to build the roster. I think you are underestimating his role.

While Tomlin's fingerprints appear to be on some personnel moves made under Khan, I don't think it's fair to pigeon-hole him entirely this way. Khan mostly inherited Pickett, then orchestrated a deal to ship him out after two years. The Wilson/Fields acquisitions were stopgap moves while they reset their search for a franchise talent. Wilson smacked of a Tomlin target, but both he and Fields came extremely cheap and, IMO, relatively low long-term expectations. The moves to get them, ship off Pickett, and be a part of 13th hour talks for an Aiyuk trade were stark departures from the previous MO.

That doesn't mean Khan hasn't flubbed moves as well. Why WR2 has become a mystical position to fill is confounding. The continued reliance on aging vets to fill gaps in an aging defense is not a formula for short or long-term success (the Eagles drafting both Mitchell and DeJean after identifying their secondary as an issue being the preferred method).

But his biggest challenge will be Tomlin - both in influence and stature. If ownership gives equal weight to Tomlin's thoughts regarding personnel both on the field and sidelines, they undermine their GM and things will continue to look some half-baked hybrid of a contending and re-tooling club.

If Tomlin has as much say in the draft as he does on the field, that could be the issue. If the Steelers had vision, they would not have given Tomlin a 3-year extension. They would have kept Khan where he was. And they would have brought in a GM that understood the NFL of this decade. Having said all that, it is still about finding the franchise QB.

^ Well that’s pretty much what I’ve been saying. Cut to the chase, he does his job with the input from the coach, ownership, and scouts. He depends on them heavily. But fair enough….

I anticipate Austin being number 4 next year

If he is even on the team

His contract is up at the end of this season and he will be a UFA

I would love to push him down the depth chart.

I think he can be a good WR3.

If he gets pushed to WR4, I think we'd have a pretty strong group.

So far under Kahn, WR2+ doesn't seem to be a priority though.

Hoping that changes because I think only having one legit threat for reasonably consistent explosive plays on a team isn't a good way to construct a roster in today's NFL. Makes the team too easy to defend. And very brittle to injuries...which obviously happen all the time in violent sports like football.

Steelers last in the NFL in running 11 personnel. I don't think anyone is surprised by this.

What does this mean to you? We knew going into the season we were using a lot of 2TE sets. I'm not surprised by this at all.

‘You are right it’s really hard to tell because of the statement you made about Tomlin having a lot of power. I believe Khan leans heavily on Weidl when it comes to the draft and player evaluation. I think the lineman on both sides of the ball especially have Wiesel’s hand prints all over them. Of those picks they all have been doing relatively well with the exception of Jones. I think the issue with Jones is we haven’t been able to develop him to his full potential. He was very green when we drafted him. That to me is more of a reflection of Meyer and our coaching.

regarding the free agents those have Tomlins prints all over them. Tomlin has been after Slay for years. The players openly admit having dialogue with Tomlin about coming here. Khan has struggled to get that second receiver in here but it’s not all on him. Jokoni and Shaheed both were given the opportunity to choose where they wanted to go between the teams that showed interest in them. We had similar comp packages as other teams looking at them so the franchise trading them was satisfied and did right by their player. I’m not sure a lot of these guys desired to come here. It’s not a great environment right now for receivers here.

Apparently the Steelers had the same offer on the table that the Jaguars and Seahawks had for Myers and Shaheed.

Both players chose the other teams over the Steelers. Is it really surprising given the type of offense they run.

At that point, all Khan could do is up the offer and overpay.

Meyers knew both of Jacksonville top 2 WRs are injured he will get more targets there, and Shaheed former OC is with Seattle.
