Darnold's contract in Seattle was not unreasonable. The Steelers should have spent the money on him, kept Pickens, and then we would be seeing something this year and going forward.

When you post that he won AFC coach of the year, that means there is also an NFC coach of the year. So it's "coaches of the year" from that organization (which no one cares about because the AP award is the one that matters).

I have replied in the thread on my opinion on trading Tomlin.

TLDR; I'd do it for a high pick that would give us a chance at a franchise QB (QB>>>HC). But I think there's very, very little chance that it happens.

I'm sure there are lots of awards he won (and deserved).

When people say "he was NFL coach of the year", they mean "he won the AP NFL coach of the year award".

Just like when people say "he was a first team all-pro", it's the AP 1st team all pro that they care about.

Noll was a great coach. I don't see why people care about whether he won the AP award or not. I'm also sure that he was much happier winning SBs vs. AP awards.

Just like I don't need Peter King and friends to put Hines in the hall (they won't) for me to believe he's one of the best Steelers players I've watched play the game.

I’m not so sure Darnold would do as well here under Tomlin.

And I am sure come free agency,Darnold knew that the Kubiak offense was a much better offense than the one in Pittsburgh.

Darnold was in a terrible situation with the Jets and Panthers, so he didn't want to be in a bad situation again.

Basically all the starters we've had since Ben that we've seen play elsewhere* looked better (or at least not worse) here, right?
    • Fields. Worse with the Jets. Maybe a push with the Bears...had more highlights. Lost a lot of games.
    • Wilson (after SEA anyway). Worse with the Giants. Worse with Denver.
    • Mason. Worse with the Titans.
    • Kenny. Maybe a push with the Eagles? Worse with the Raiders.
    • Rodgers (after GB). Worse with the Jets.
    • Mitch is maybe an exception? He was bad with us. And bad elsewhere. Not sure which degree of badness was worse. Kind of like Fields in that he had lower highs and higher lows with us (although even Tomlin couldn't eliminate his trait of being a turnover machine).
Duck never played anywhere else. Hard to believe he'd have done any better elsewhere though.

Doesn't mean that Darnold would necessarily be better here. But I think it's also hard to argue that he'd be worse.

    * Meaning played elsewhere in a similar time frame. Wilson and especially Rodgers were much better in their primes on other teams.

‘Exactly that’s why we will never advance as a team in getting competent QB play or development with Tomlin at the helm. Sure Rodgers is Rodgers but we aren’t going to draft and develope any one. We are kidding ourselves. Steelers games are so frustrating to watch. When we do win it’s almost always because of winning the turnover margin. If we don’t produce turnovers we don’t win. We don’t put consistent long drives together and just drive down the field on teams week in and week out. On defense if we don’t get a big splash play we don’t get off the field. We have had countless different players both on offense and defense and things never change. Everyone knows the common denominator to all of this and yet people still come up with excuses to defend Tomlin.

Team like the Jets,Giants,Bears and titans were among the worst situation in the NFL....The situation of the current steelers are not among the worst in the league for a QB but this is also not among the best of the league for a QB too...This is below average like 15-20

That’s not a fair comparison-Arizona to make. The Jets are a horrible franchise so it’s hard to com-are both Fields and Rodgers play with us and them. Rodgers came out and spoke about their dysfunction and they fired their coach anyway and the coach this year is brand new. Rodgers also was coming off an Achilles injury.

Mason with the Titans is the same thing. Another franchise that is currently worse than the Steelers. The only legit comparison is Wilson and he had a handful of games that were good until teams blanketed the perimeter of the field and forced him to throw over the middle. I think Wilson’s limited success here is more of a thumbs up for Arthur Smith than it is for Tomlin. Smith was able to open the offense up a little with the deep ball because that is Russ’s game. I do think Tomlin by his nature is restrictive in allowing Smith autonomy to run the offense the way he wanted to run it. I get all HC’s are probably like that to a degree but Tomlin isn’t skilled in the ways of offense he isn’t an offensive minded coach and he is overwhelmingly conservative by nature. It really hurts a QB’s development here and it hurts the offense as a whole as a result.

This team will regress if we continue with Tomlin.

Let me be clear. I don’t think it would happen but at least I can see a path with this one do to the Rooney and Mara’s relationship.

Rough stretch of games is an understatement. It’s been a rough decade. I applauded you in still believing in Tomlin. I can’t do it. I hate the product he continues to put on the field year after year.

My post about this is admittedly more about wishful thinking. Do I believe it will happen, no. But at least the path to this is a little more realistic than many of the others out there.

It’s not all about numbers Tomlin jock sniffer. He can’t develop QB’s unless they have already been developed elsewhere. We’re trending in the wrong direction because of Tomlin’s arrogance and pride. We have nobody in the organization that checks Tomlin. He has nearly full control and final say. A sane organization would not allow him to bring in players he has a love affair with just because … when they don’t fit the system. Darius Slay is a perfect example of this. I’m not gonna explain why if you’re smart and you actually know football you’ll figure it out. But we keep doing this year after year.

Tomlin was successful early on with Cowhers players, Ben in his prime was huge and having tenured Coordinators like Lebeau and Arians made a massive difference because Tomlin let those guys coach. The more Tomlin got his own coaches and players in there the more the team trended in the wrong direction. It’s exactly like Belicheck in New England, he got too big for the organization and wouldn’t listen to any outside influence. There is a reason Tomlin doesn’t have a coaching tree.

Well, he's not a QB coach or OC it's their job to develop the QB.

And yet he clearly is overly involved in that area preventing those guys from doing their job. Not to mention his recent track record of picking coordinators isn’t great. That’s on him. I do think Smith is decent but hamstrung and held back by Tomlin because that’s what Tomlin does.
