I think you’re confusing the GM with those that evaluate the talent on the field. He’s not their coach or scout. They give him the skinny on who should go and who should stay. His job is to make that happen. It is HIS job to make it happen in the best way possible. Objectively, that means , money, division, and yes replacement. But as the GM you’re not always given the best of circumstances. In fact, you’re at times given pretty bad deals to complete or even ones you disagree with, BUT you get it done and try not to sell the farm doing it.

    IMO

I actually agree. On one hand, I think he’s clearly better than late-Colbert in some areas. He’s more aggressive, he’s willing to trade, he’s not afraid to restructure or move money around, and the last few drafts look solid overall. He’s definitely brought a more modern, analytical feel to the front office.

But on the other hand… I’m starting to wonder about his overall roster-building vision.

Some of his moves feel like “let’s go all-in” — trading for Ramsey, signing Rodgers, restructuring deals to stay competitive — but then he leaves huge, obvious holes untouched. Two straight seasons with no real WR2 option, even though the offense is clearly suffocating without one. Then the secondary plan this year sold itself as clever value hunting, but most of those bets just didn’t hit. Thornhill, Slay, Echols… that’s a lot of misses in one area of the roster.

To me, Khan’s problem so far isn’t that he’s bad — it’s that he’s inconsistent. He nails the big moves, then gets too cute with the supporting pieces. And in today’s NFL, you can’t halfway-build a roster. If you’re going all-in, you have to actually finish the job.

I still think he can be the right GM long-term, but he’s got to show he can connect the dots between bold moves and complete roster construction.

Who has ownerships support and ear? I think it Tomlin more than Khan (who is relatively new to his role). Tomlin is the one who keeps getting extended despite his mediocre results, thats some solid loyalty and trust by the Rooneys. Tomlin wants to win now and silence the doubters, all these FA moves point to that.

Khan is so-so in the draft.

    Good at trades.

Bad at new contracts and getting fair value for the players on the 2nd contracts or more.

Like you said, he is mediocre.

A good GM would have solved our QB situation by now.

I think part of this is scheme and part of this is that Austin isn't a WR2. I think he's an average to above average WR3.

I wouldn't blame Kahn for the lack of WRs. It was clear from early on that Smith/Tomlin wanted to build a TE-centric offense knowing the OL would need help but also that they could be used in 13 personnel as receivers. Only the LAR run more 13 personnel than the Steelers. (Steelers also 7th in 12 personnel). Kahn did his part to get the TEs. Smith hasn't been able to build the offense he envisioned for Rodgers.
Steelers early down 13 personnel EPA is ranked 23rd. LAR early down 13 personnel EPA is ranked #1. That is the difference. Rams have made it work, Steelers not so much.

Jonu has been basically useless. We were told he would be just like another WR out there :roflmao:
