It's what I'm trying to figure out. I don't know how it could be the coaching, unless they are just being stubborn. It's the same coaches as last few years outside of the DBs coach, and he's been on the team as an assistant, so that part makes no sense.....they didn't just forget how they used to do it, but they have changed a lot of how they attack certain looks this year, and it's not working, and I can't figure out why they are continuing using something that is not working, and that they usually don't do.
Getting beat at your strength is one thing, but getting beat at something new, and apparently a weakness is something different.
It's like they are stubbornly trying new stuff whether it's working or not.

Not all changes are good, as anyone that actually knows what they are looking at can see. I swear to everything that I feel like I'm arguing about a colors scheme to a born blind man sometimes on here.
Some of You have no clue at what You are seeing. They see 11 people on D, and whether a player is open , or not, and that's it. If it's not on stats, it's not happening. LoL. I get complaints of how it's working, and the outcome, but to say we haven't changed anything is totally wrong. Hell I wish we'd go back to what we were doing.

I'll say this. I'm just not sure why this is a surprise. This issue is multifaceted and I talked about these issues all summer.

1: coaching; Austin has been subpar his prior two jobs. He's been semi-successful the previous couple of years just due to talent overcoming his shortcomings. Team building hasn't done him favors. Tomlin is still a good/great coach, just his message gotten stale and with 5 of the 11 starters on defense not being drafted by the Steelers just allows the culture to quit on him easier than previous teams. As for scheme, I'm not against the 425 defensive set; I'm just against the coverage schemes and blitz packages created out of it. 425/335 will be the norm within 3 years, so I hope our next DC has a better system that allows our guys to succeed.

2: players/team building; The biggest problem with being overly aggressive in attacking FA the way we have is you can't plug in 4-5 starters on defense a year and not have chemistry/miscommunication issues; then add in the fact that the bulk of these additions are guys 30+ and are a shell of their former selves. Each individual move probably wasn't a bad move, it's just collectively its terrible team building. We need to strip the defense down to a core of youth and build around it.

 

I have to agree. All these players suddenly didn't get bad in a single season.

Haley stay with the steelers for 6 long years...This is rare in the NFL it happens that a OC or DC stay that long with a same teams....Coach like Spags in KC right now,LeBeau with us or Josh McDaniels in New England,maybe some others that I did not mentionned are the exception,not the norm

 

Hoping this Thread Title becomes the Poster Child for the rest of the season (at least the first half today).
