That was COWHER's own STUBBORN fault, in many ways - to be fair

Agree with this. Only way Howard gets to play is if AR is on IR... and they decide to bench Rudolph for Howard.

We beat the Chargers last season. Lost to the Colts. Split with every team in our division. That could happen again. We could sweep the Browns this year.

Miami and Chicago are winnable. ARod owns the Bears.

Bills have not looked completely dominant, but I agree it will be a tough one to win even at home.

Just in case there were lingering questions about what the Steelers are up against this weekend:

Colts are a machine this year truly remarkable figuring Danny Dimes is the QB.

And a bad plan is still a bad plan.
If You have actually understood what You watch, the reason the D is playing so poorly is because we have changed a great deal of what we do.
This is why I laugh at the we never change anything. In the midst of many changes the people that don't understand what they see say.....we are like this because we never change. LoL
Proof they have no clue at what they are seeing.
I totally understand people complain because of the results, but stop the we never change because it just shows lack of understanding. I personally wish we would go back to how we usually run the D.

And just one season ago it was Richardson and Flacco. But really, it's about Taylor having a Barklesque season.

Honest question; why did they change what they did on defense? Lack of players? Results? Coaching?

My opinion is Austin is lost in gameplanning the details. It might be Tomlin's overall scheme but Austin is failing in the coaching of details of the scheme. The miscommunications are just a symptom of this.

I'd honestly say they've went more 425 as an answer to offenses going more spread. I'd say the bulk of the defenses in the league are more 335/425 than the traditional 43/34 defensive sets.

As for the why it's not working, my personal opinion is we're not exactly drafting for the new philosophy and decided to bring in geriatric stopgaps on a year basis resulting in communication and chemistry issues. How many starters on this defense are guys who we drafted vs how many starters we acquired from the outside is my beef, especially on the back-end (Porter/Holcomb)? I also understand that we have a limited amount of draft picks vs amount of holes we have on the team, which is exactly why I wanted a hard reset ever since Ben retired.

I'm also not going to use this as an excuse to dismiss Tomlin and Austin. Austin has had a horrible track record as DC and frankly isn't doing a great job of camouflaging our weaknesses, plus he's making little to no adjustments. The defense is just schematically built to create splash (sacks/turnovers) in a bend but don't break philosophy. But with the added miscommunication and lack of splash, this squad just gets gashed up and down the field.

No idea what this graph actually means, but if I look at the Colts they have out scored the opposition by 116 points in 8 games, which is a 14.5 point average margin over 4 quarters. So how can they have an average quarter differential of 7 points? That would be an 28 point per game difference. Our numbers don’t add up either. We have scored and allowed 175 points. Zero differential, but that’s not what the graph shows.

Someone made the point that Tomlin seems even more complacent than usual. Losing is the new standard. But it's been a long time since the defense has been this bad. I am already having nightmares about Taylor running right up the middle for 20 yards at a clip. Also, Steelers have a lot of trouble covering tight ends....but, ya know, I will be watching and hoping for a miracle.

People need to let go of this Howard thing...if he was any good he wouldn't have been there in the 5th.

NFL teams have too much tape and data on these players anymore, the days of Tom Brady being available in round 6 are no more.

And before someone throws Purdy's name out there....he's a system guy, not a franchise guy.

They are #30 in yards against our defense so far this year. 2002, the NFL became 32 teams, so going back that far and using season total stats yards against our defense (not thru week 8 like we are at right now), never.

    2024 - 21
    2023 - 25
    2022 - 19
    2021 - 25
    2020 - 12
    2019 - 22
    2018 - 2

    2013 - 17

    2003 - 18

Every other year of 32 teams, we were single digit ranking (9 or lower).

You have to wonder, just how bad would we be if we were not the highest paid defense in the NFL this year and a top spender there for many other years. //sarcasm

It depends on how they did their math. For example:

    Q1 - 7-0
    Q2 - 7-0
    Q3 - 14-7
    Q4 - 21-14

They win the game 21 to 14, but had a point differential of 7 in all 4 quarters. I would suspect that whoever made the graph used data something along those lines and maybe worded it strangely to make it sound like they outscored their opponents by 7 every quarter which is different and would look like this: 7-0, 14-0, 21-0, 28-0 would be a TD more than the other team in every quarter which is a 7 points scored differential in every quarter. It all depends on how it was worded.

I don’t think everyone is quitting but they have just seen this show every year. I mean this year was supposed to be different with all the additions they made yet it’s the same old as years before. IMO we need another receiver and running back. Warren is not an every down back. That’s why he looked good with Najee. He came in as a change of pace back. I say give Gainwell more carries or look for a back we can bring in.

Najee worked as the workhorse. I say give Gainwell more carries and see how he looks or look for a back we can possibly bring in.

I mean have you watched this team get torched on the defensive every game even in wins and struggle on offense in almost every game except the Bengals game and think we have a chance at making or winning the SB? Anything is possible but I don’t see it.

Of course fight every game but it looks like the defense just quits once they start getting torched so what do you think the fan starts thinking?

All that said I really hope we can pull this off and beat the Colts but Taylor is going to be hard to stop. Never mind the Ravens are only 2 games behind and Lamar is healthy. The division looked as if it was ours to lose then we decided to get beat the last two weeks and last week badly. Thus letting everyone except the Browns back into the division with so many game left.

This is correct. It's the average of the score difference for each quarter for the season.

Here's the Steelers first quarter score differences:

    (−2)+(−1)+7+4+3+(−7) +(−4) = 0÷7=0

This is shown in column 1. Repeat for other quarters.

As all of you I have watched a lot of Steelers football. 6 SB’s wins and the lists go on and on. My problem is at 84 I’m starting in the middle of the 4th quarter if longevity. I doubt very much that with this coaching staff and Front Office running this franchise I will never see another Steelers Super Bowl, hell I might not even see a playoff win.

Yet they fired the OC after that game
Yet we got some on here that say the Steelers change?!
Here recently it’s been all the offense fault for giving up over 30 points a game.
    Some people are so gullible
