Don't know if it's ever been discussed here but I was just reading something over on Sulia about whether Bill will ever coach again and in the comment section a poster brought up a GM position, I honestly never even thought about BC as our GM. All hypothetical of course, for one, Colbert isn't going to be fired, so Cowher would have to wait for him to step down but I for one would love Cowher as our GM. Not knocking Colbert, I like him a lot, it's just those 90's teams were so freaking talented, year in and year out we were decimated by FA defections, some of you guys think we lost a lot this year, pfft, thats nothing, we were losing guys in their prime every year and every year we just kept rolling, next man up was really the standard is the standard back then.

I'd only have him pick the D, his offensive picks would only be about running the ball in a passing league, it wouldn't work.

So many things to address with this one sentence. First off, BC had very good talent across the board at all positions, so I wouldn't turn him down just because he likes a ground game. Secondly, I hear it's a passing league a lot, the in vogue thing to say but a ball controlled offense with a good D is still a recipe for success, don't care how pass happy the league is, if you keep the ball away from the other team, they aren't going to score a lot of points. Thirdly, better make your peace with a ground attack because thats where we are headed next season. They didn't draft a RB in the 2nd round just so Ben can continue to air it out.

All your points about a balanced offense are correct but the cliche about a passing league is still appropriate, if we don't have efficient qb play, we'd be more like the Browns. We would be improving but nowhere near capable of winning a super bowl. Kind of sums up Cowher's career until Ben arrived. People wanna gloss over that with the failure of last season as well as the GB super bowl.

But we do have a QB now, put that together with a balanced attack and you have a tough team to beat. That's the point, Bill is very good at evaluating talent, he put together some great teams.

    Lol.

I see your point BF about the 90s teams, but I wonder how much that had to do with Cowher's a) fired up mentality and b) his development of technique. He got the most out of (most of) the players he had (with some notable exceptions, such as Kordell). But Im' not sure either of those would particulalry translate into a GM role.

They drafted a RB cus they need one, Dwyer has a small fuel tank and Redman is an unproven 28 yr old. I like the running game too but B C over killed it when he was our coach, even when the running game wasn't working. You have to balance the two out, so 1 opens up the other.

It is a passing league but any coach knows that they need to run the ball effectively to have an elite passing offense, the Packers have one of the best passing QBs in the league, but they drafted two running backs Lacey and Franklin to give Rodgers the help he needs to keep defenses guessing, he was sacked 51 times last year because he didn't have a running game, so NFL football on offense can tweak their offenses to go heavy on the pass, but the running game will always be their bread and butter in the NFL...

They would have drafted one in the 4th round if they weren't planning on emphasizing the run, Bell has the ability to stay on the field for all 3 downs. We're getting off topic though, the fact is, BC is a good evaluator of talent, his teams are proof of that, his one achilles heel was not drafting a top tier QB until Dan Rooney step in and told them to draft Ben.

ya one last point since this is getting off topic

Bell wouldn't have been there in the 4th. Another thing about Dwyer and Redman, both signed 1 year tenders , so they could be gone after this coming season. This team had to draft a running back, they have nothing behind these 2, and this draft was a strong one for RB's. They were suppose to run the ball last season and didn't.

I know that, they want to bring back the running game, that's my point.
