MR has made a reported 17.5 million thru this season. That is peanuts compared to some of the contracts out there. TJ makes more than double that per year. But.......17.5 mil is still a crazy amount of money. He will add several million more to that in the 2026 season, and you can expect that he will have several more years as a backup before he hangs it up. I would bet that if he plays another 6 years beyond his current contract, he will finish with around 35 million in earnings from the NFL. There is not too many of us out there that could not scrape by on the kind of money he will have if he is investing and being smart with his spending.

He will be 37 which is not at all unreasonable for a backup QB. He will have his health as the vast majority of his career was spent on a sideline. And he should have well north of 50 million in investments. A 4% withdrawal on 50 million gives him 2 million a year to spend. If he paid 35% tax, he would have $3,500 per day to spend. He will be quite alright.

So nobody needs to feel sorry for him and his current 'could be a starter in the AFC North' problem. Heck, he has been a starter there. He did not wow anyone.

 

The only issue with this is that Mason didn't say anything or complain about being a starter on any of the other AFC North teams. The whole story is based on Kaboly asking a question and supposedly him getting a look in reply.

 

I did not want to give that impression at all. MR has always been a team player IMO. I am sure that behind the scenes there have been some thrown equipment and heated words........but he has been drama free to all outward appearances. No cryptic posts on social media. No stupid antics on the field. No run ins with the law. Just off season pictures of him and his lovely lady.

 

And yet there are a couple of posters here who claim Mason was never given a fair chance

 

I have said that, but for only one year, and it was money, and draft spending that lead to that, and for almost all NFL teams this is a way of business. The year Trubisky, and Pickett started over him. Nobody but fan boys can tell me either Trubisky, or Pickett is better than He is, but I understood why it was done, and it's in the past.

 

I think the term fair chance is subjective based on the poster's point of view. I think Mason was given opportunities, was he put in a position to succeed in those opportunities? Again subjective. I do know that Landry Jones, Josh Dobbs, and Mason Rudolph were in a situation where they were trying to play QB where the playbook was designed for a player they were not ever going to be. Honestly I think they all were drafted by the Steelers in the belief that they only ever would be backup or 2nd string guys. Thet weren't drafted to replace Ben and that hampers development at times.
