Sounds like Calvin Austin may be headed to IR. Shame we gave away George Pickens and now have chosen to pickup NOBODY during the bye week. Thanks Khan.

Is it Roman Wilson time yet?

He has the third most snap % of the WRs, but only has two targets on 27 routes run. The guy is just not getting open. Trending toward a bad bust for Kahn:

In the words of Steeler Glenn, Who?

Hopefully Austin III gets back sooner then later. I will give props to Arthur Smith who stated before the start of the season that he would be the #2

Saying he is 3rd most is a little misleading, hes still barely being used. 27 routes in 4 games is nothing. His efficiency would have to be off the charts to be any good at that usage.

Why is he being given so few opportunities.

The answer is obvious and it shows that Khan dropped the ball big time. Trading Pickens without adding an adequate replacement was a huge mistake, the type of mistake Khan also made last year. In that case, Johnson made him look good by being a disaster elsewhere. Khan hasn't been so lucky this time. Pickens is lighting it up as part of an explosive offense in Dallas while the Steelers muddle along without a No. 2 wide receiver. Again.

49ers need a pass rusher.... we got Highsmith. They have Aiyuk... both are injury prone, but it may be worth rolling the dice.

Is it? I mean he’d have to be the worst bust since Huey to barely even see the field. Or is there something else going on?

I find it hard to believe with the talent he put on tape in college that he is so bad he cant even get on the field.

The complete w/r approach has been odd for some years now. I get going for DK and not keeping Pickens, if there was internal stuff and you were not going to pay him, but the for several years we have went for aging guys who have not banned out at all trying to find that secondary role. What ever 'all in' means is not going get you far with the staff he brought in.

Yes and no. I think Khan at least in part was influenced by what Smith wanted to do on offense. Some analysts have them running out of 12-personnel over 52% of the time. Steelers Depot has them closer to 42%, but they also cite another 11% for 13-personnel. Add in 10% for some I-formations and you can push 70% of what they've run containing two or less WRs. That, on top of the Jonnu Smith acquisition, the bump in Washington's routes, the praise given to Austin (and at times even Wilson) in camp, and the flip from Harris to a (supposedly) more outside-zone friendly big back in Johnson suggests to me that they were content with what they had in the receiver room.

The caveat is whether they were right to feel that way. SD has them ranked 27th in EPA out of both 12-p (-7.92) and 13-p (-5.93) - the latter actually being worse since only 28 teams have run 13-p this year. o_O Either way, that ain't good. The question is where in the execution are things failing, and whether an upgrade at WR2 would have a significant impact in correcting/overcoming it.

This is where I think some arguments don't make sense. That the team thought a decision was right does not make it right.

Read an article yesterday that stated the reason Roman wasn’t getting much attention, was AS offensive scheme that involves more TE use.
Tomlin also stated, we have 13 more games to go, has nothing to do with Romans capabilities or the lack thereof. All boils down to the offensive scheme the Steelers are using with their TEs
Please don’t make me look it up. It doesn’t matter anyhow, no body believes anything the beat writers write any hews.

See my response. Khan didn’t drop the ball. Just a different offensive scheme utilizing our 30 TEs we got. Lol
Our #1 wr also isn’t putting up #1 wr numbers. DK Metcalf
    15 rec through 4 games
Comes out to a little over 60 receptions in a 17 game season
Which comes out to a little over 3 catches a game.

    Article

On Tuesday, a reporter asked for clarification on Wilson's usage over the past four weeks — which includes just three snaps on offense vs. the Vikings in Week 4. According to Tomlin, it's been less of a talent issue and more of a game plan decision.

"Or it might just be our selection of personnel group," Tomlin said about Wilson's playing time. "We've been talking a lot about multiple tight ends, Spencer Anderson reporting as eligible, the utilization of multiple tight end groups.

"His lack of participation might not mean anything relative to his performance or what's going on at his position. It might just mean how we choose to deploy our personnel groups through the first month of the season. It's still very early in this process. We got thirteen straight games ahead of us. So, keep watching.

This is where I think you get too caught up with being 'right.' I didn't defend anything as right/wrong; I recognized the situation as being a little more complex than the statement I highlighted of yours.

Roman Wilson is question mark at best.
The knock is poor routes and not knowing his assignments.
I can't vouch for those digs one way or the other.

But if he gets on the field, Rogers will throw him the ball.

What he has to do is catch it and build Roger's confidence in him.
He must run those timing routes, and he must be on the mark.

As for Omar (The Brain) I don't know... I'm not a fan.
