I am doing a running tally of Skenes’s ERA in his last start of the year. At the end of the third, I have him with 184 2/3 innings pitched with 41 earned runs. That gives an ERA of 1.99819495, which rounds to 2.00. If he pitches one more shutout inning, he will have an ERA of 1.98743267, which rounds to 1.99. Wonder if they pull him to give him a sub 2 ERA?

Edit: Skenes shut out the Reds in the 4th. ERA 1.98743267
Edit: Skenes shut out the Reds in the 5th. ERA 1.97678572 Pitch count 70
Edit: Skenes shut out the Reds in the 6th. ERA 1.96625223 Pitch count 85
    Hope they pull him.
Edit: They did. Paul, get a shower, ya done fine!

Also, his WHIP is 0.948. His season was just ridiculous.
A Cy Young candidate with a 10-10 record? May be some controversy but he deserves it. It speaks volumes that a Pirate pitcher would have to have a historic year to end up with a .500 record.
At least pitch count is being limited.
Looking back at the innings thrown by guys in the 60s and 70s, it makes you shake your head. Koufax, especially, was ruined at a young age from overuse.

He really has had a spectacular season, worthy of the CY.
It goes without saying that with just a little offense behind him, he would easily have won 15+ games along with fewer losses. There will be controversy for sure, and I expect that Cristopher Sanchez from the Phillies may get some votes. Zack Wheeler getting injured early in August made this a wide open CY race. Yammamoto from the Dodgers may also get some support, as could Logan Webb from SF.

Some of the older writers are just not going to support a .500 pitcher despite his sterling numbers, and will look for someone on a contender.

As for Koufax, I don't think it was overuse that ended his career, I believe he injured his elbow on a slide in the early 60's, causing the arthritis that drove him to retire young.

A 10-10 record on the Pirates would have been 18-2 on the Phillies.

Cy young was set up for lowest era.
    Win, loss doesn’t matter.
Who would ever imagine having a 1.97 era and that pitcher would be 10-10?
    Awful supporting cast
I also believe there is not a hitter on Pirates that has 20hrs this year!
    Edit:
My apologies, Cruz has exactly 20 hrs
    Still sad

Upon further further review, I stand incorrect again.
    Cy Young for best pitcher
    All the key ingredients:
    ERA
    WINS
    INNINGS PITCHED
    SOs
    WHIP
Skenes is outstanding in all categories except wins.

Neither the elbow injury nor the arthritis helped things. And today they are saying that he had a partial UCL tear and could have been helped by Tommy John surgery.
Three of his last four years he pitched over 300 innings. He had several seasons with 27 complete games. Numbers like that will not be seen again. It’s crazy.

I read a column written by some doctor that said he had a partial tear. Didn't know how much stock to put in it as I don't think he treated Koufax, but if true, just makes what he did even more amazing.

If you look at the starting pitcher workload in the 60's & 70's, what those stud starters did was amazing. Most of them never touched a ball from the time their season ended until spring training. And most of them had incredibly long careers as top starters. Heck, even in the 90's and early 2000's, guys like Maddox and Randy Johnson were compiling incredible stats and tons of innings over very long careers.

I think the emphasis on young kids training to pitch virtually year round, with no break from the game, and the emphasis on spin rates is the leading culprit in the wide swath of injuries today.
