Or maybe Butler was a disgruntled employee who was forced out

Look at these play sheets these HCs have and they call their own defense, you ever see Tomlin with something like this other than maybe an index card on occasion.

The Steelers wanted Butler back after 2021 but he decided to retire.....it wasn't a Bruce Arians situation

With as complex as our scheme is a post-it note would suffice.

I don't know what's so hard to believe with this. Tomlin himself has purported that he 'does more than suggest' plays on both sides of the ball. Not saying he calls 100% of the defensive snaps, but I definitely think he's involved, especially as Austin isn't a strong coordinator.

For the 500th time, because you can freaking see it, and again for the 500 th time you can hear it on that one show where You. can hear the coaches, and the players talking they used to have on. If Butler, and Austin mouth is moving, and they are looking at a call sheet, and in the same exact frame Tomlin is not moving his mouth, and is not looking at a call sheet, the only way he is calling plays is if He is 1...a freaking genius, and 2. A awesome ventriloquist, and 3. If You count in the time we got to hear, he's also has to be able to mimic the other coaches vocals.
    So what's easier to believe???
He's a genius, a ventriloquist, and a great impersonator, or a DC was disgruntled for being let go???

People when You are at the game , watch the freaking coach's, and when You are watching on TV, do You guys look away when they show them calling plays???
You can clearly see the HCs that do, and don't call plays on offense, or Defense.

Ah! So for you it's as simple as "This guy is holding the paper, he's in charge." My bad. I was imagining all kinds of scenarios where the head coach dictated what the assistant coaches do.

Well, I guess Tomlin has earned the benefit of the doubt.

And that doesn't mean as much as you think it does. There are a hundred ways Tomlin could still be controlling what defense is played on the field without being the one to speak the words into the mic. It could all happen before the game even starts, building a rigid framework of what defenses to run, what to call in what situations, personnel, everything. You never had a job where you couldn't do what you were supposed to do because your boss micromanaged you?

Here's a fun clip of Todd Haley running the offense. How much time did they have to make a plan there, 5 minutes? And Tomlin gives the instruction for what to do as they're lined up to play, about to snap the ball. What were they doing for all that time in between? It's an extreme example, but what we're looking at is a complete failure between the OC and players on the field, and I blame the head coach for it. The week-to-week can look differently. A head coach can say, "Hey, we gotta start blitzing more" and let the DC take it from there. Or he can call the plays himself. Or he can micromanage everything so the DC has extremely little wiggle room in what they can call. It could be anything, and we don't know. You can say Butler's lying, but what he says makes sense when you look at the stagnation on both sides of the ball over the years with Tomlin. He's the consistent factor.

I'm not denying Tomlin has a big influence on the defense, but that nonsense he's calling all the plays I'm not buying it.

Never mind the fact that when Butler made his claim Arthur Moats said that wasn't true, he said Tomlin only made a few calls a game.

Tomlin sets the strategy. The DC sets the tactics.

Okay, but I don't know where that's any better. You think he has half the play sheet memorized? And if I'm coordinating a strategy for the game, I don't want my boss stepping in and calling his own plays whenever he feels the urge. I'd be handing him the call sheet at that point. I'm not a fan of micromanaging.

Are they misding Minkah more than we thought they would?

He is a good tackler and was an organiser in that secondary

That said, it doesn’t explain the whole defence looking soft and uninterested

If a team can't control the line of scrimmage, they are going to have disturbing defensive stats. There are one of two problems. Either their drafting sucks or they coaching sucks. My eyes tell me it's probably both.

I kind of fore saw that our secondary would struggle... I guess I naively thought our front 7 would be so disruptive that it wouldn't even matter.

But now we have no pass rush and and all the warts are showing.

What we really needed was Minkah AND Ramsey together in the secondary. Too bad we couldn't have made a different deal.

At this point, I will be happy if they can just keep our QB from looking like road pizza. I have no doubt that we will get better. Rodgers needs to survive until we do. He is 42 years old. We can't let him take 6 sacks a game and get knocked down a bunch of other times during the course of a game.

I don't know why some of you fans act like he doesn't let Austin do his job during the game, by watching them on the sideline it doesn't look like he's micromanaging..

I don't think they're missing Minkah, the secondary had issues last year and he was no longer making splash plays.

What's funny to me in light of this discussion is all the posters on a certain other site I used to go to who routinely called Tomlin a potted plant for never doing anything!
