I guess I wasn’t very clear. I was talking about the receiver. Instead of just walking away and not doing anything, he should have ran back to the ball and kicked it out of the end zone. The ball at the 20 with our possession is better than 7 points for the opposing team.

Not really, no, it isn't. The kickoff rules have changed a few times in recent years and Johnson is a rookie. Don't get me wrong. He should know better, but your comparison doesn't really work. I think that distinction matters because while Johnson was incredibly stupid, the coaches also deserve a part of the blame, too.

No, but they can throw the red flag or call a time-out to get the officials' attention and make sure there is a review.

No, but it is silly to talk about how he has run the ball in regular season games anyway given the tiny sample size.

I told you High School , I subbed for a day for the 2nd. grade and it about drove me nuts i have PTSD from it.. No way would I coach that age and deal with all the parents of future NFL HOF'S.. HS is bad enough with the parents ..We actually had designed plays and threw the ball and everything..lol

On a side note the Steelers might need my help as a Defensive Coach , I can't do any worse..I might get beat by big plays , but I would be run blitzing and stunting on every play .Our guys look like blocking sleds ..

He may not really Love the game ? He doesn't seem interested or motivated at all ..Lack of interest does lead to bone headed plays ..IMO he should be cut and signed to the practice squad no 1 will steal him if they do so what..

No role for him he just needs time if he has the desire . He needs to be on a practice squad he is just not ready ..

Third-round picks don't make it to the practice squad. Some other team would sign him. They aren't giving up on the guy when he has all of two carries in the NFL. That said, he should not be returning kickoffs. He isn't good at it.

He would make it no Team needs a slow RB with very little power with a weak Football IQ.. I dont think its giving up he is just not with it ..IMO putting him on the practice squad is the only chance this kid has .. Or maybe fake a injury and put him on IR for the year..

He is not a kick returner , he is not good enough to play Offense so traveling with the Team and just sitting on the bench will do him more harm than good, and him playing is doing the Team more harm than good.

Not sure, but I think that's a penalty if you kick the ball out of bounds? It would have still been a hell of a lot better than what happened though.

If the rules are still the same it's a Safety a smart play in theory , but with our D probably giving up 9 points instead of 7 ..

I have tried to look this up but I would swear I Have seen the Steelers do this twice in the same season. I was surprised Danny Smith survived it that season. The other thing that hasn’t been mentioned is you act like it’s a LIVE ball regardless if it’s a dead ball. Just pretend It’s YOUR JOB and you are being PAID for MAXIMUM effort. He played for probably 6 minutes out of 3 hours. Feel free to break a sweat. There are showers in the locker room.

Interesting that the Jets immediately canned their KO return guy who fumbled in Week 1 that turned that game around. :hmm:

He never had possession of the ball so it wouldn't have been a safety. If he batted it out of the endzone then it would have come out to the 20. If he kicked it out it would have been a penalty and half the distance to the goal. Meaning the Steelers would have started at their 10 yard line.

Coaches cannot throw the red flag on a scoring play. The play is automatically reviewed. Calling a timeout, when the play is already being reviewed, just wastes a time out

I think it hit him , if it did that would make it a Safety.. You are correct if it didn't touch him ..

So don't give him a hat on Sundays or play him somewhere else on special teams. You don't give up on a player you took that high after two games. Your characterization of Johnson's abilities reflects your lack of knowledge about the player, not his actual talent.

Not necessarily. Both actions slow things down. Sure, they bend the rules a bit, but it was worth it in that case.

I am not giving up on him ,I think he looks like he is not happy, I just see him as a waste on the 53 man roster until he can gain confidence ..Not having a hat isn't going to get his head right, playing as a up man on KR getting pounded and no recognition is not going to build him up.. He is slow to be on the punt Team or kickoff Team ..

He needs all the reps he can get the best place is a practice squad as a RB , the only position he may be able to play someday ..

Plus as a practice squad RB he would run the scout Team meaning other Teams playbooks this should keep him interested and help him learn and develop ..If he was making hustle mistakes or effort mistakes then fine , but he is not he is simply not ready and it's not even close. Cutting him is in his best interest..

If it hit him and the officials determine
I just checked the rule if it hits off the returner and the ball goes into the end zone and he recovers it, then it is considered a touchback if the officials decide that the momentum of the ball would have gone into the end zone anyway.

Yes but if he touches it in play and bats or kicks it out it is a Safety ? Or at least it used to be ..

Tomlin could not have challenged because it was called a score on the field so it gets reviewed by rule.

No not unless he has full possession and then fumbles it. Let's say Johnson would have fielded the ball taken a couple of steps and then fumbled it. Then he recovers his own fumble after it went back in the endzone, then it's a safety. If hits the returner and then bounces back into the endzone then it's just a touchback. The key is he has to have full possession.

Okay thats weird because it seems any live ball batted or kicked out of the end zone by the receiving Team should be a safety it always used to be..

If a QB does it or anyone on the Offense bats a live ball out of end zone its a Safety .. If a punter runs out the back or bats or kicks it out or anyone on the punt Team it's a Safety ..I am not sure how they would have a separate rule on live balls for a KR and the return Team..IMO this would give the KR Team a unfair advantage as they could kick or bat or run out of the back keeping the kicking Team from recovering ..
