I like the kid. Seems to have a good football head on his shoulders. Throws a good deep ball and a catchable ball. Good touch. He's in the perfect situation in Pittsburgh. He can grow and develop behind Ben for a few years and may turn into something special. Who knows?

I think he was a solid choice. His skill set fits what Haley wants to do on offense perfectly. He could very well turn out to be a great pick for us.

This pick just blew me away. Never ever thought we would take a QB this draft (after signing Grad). Like the kid just dont see him playing much next 3-4 seasons.Trade bait after a season or two?

I think GM's around the league have really soured on trading for backup QB's. Matt Cassell and Kevin Kolb cost a fortune and didn't pan out. So then prices dropped drastically but there was still some interest in guys like Flynn, which also didn't work out. This kid would have to look like an absolute world beater for us to get anything worth talking about. The Pats tried to move Ryan Mallett, which is a very, very talented backup, but it doesn't sound like there was much interest. Doubt we'd be able to trade Jones for much, if anything

Could always cut Grad if we think Jones is capable of being a good backup to Ben.

Would you have preferred that they resigned Batch or Leftwich? When is the last time Ben actually played a full season?

Understand all that.....Bens going to get hurt....Need a backup for the backup...Bla Bla Bla.....We have Grad. Decent back up keep Batch for one more year or bring in a UDFA to be the back up for the back up.....Dont waist a draft pick there....JMO!!

we have grad for 3 years yes. we have ben for who knows how long with his style of play he is one play away from missing alot of time. as we seen this year. if we had a decent backup he might have not tried to come back so soon. what is jones sits for a couple of years and is great? you all dont know and neither do i. thats why the guys making these decisions are doing it for a living and we just wish we were

At this point, I don't like what we have in Batch or Leftwich. I just don't! Batch is a great guy, great teammate and great in the locker room but so handicapped with his skill set. Leftwich just isn't that good! He shows flashes, but Jones will show flashes to! Leftwich is so darn fragile, I'm afraid he will break a rib breathing. I think we have Ben, then either Grad or Jones as the #2, then Leftwich. I think Batch needs to go and I hate saying it because he is such a great guy and sometimes even more important, a great teammate and locker room guy! Just my opinion!

It's time to move on from Batch and Lefty. Landry Jones is one of those quarterbacks that should develop into a good backup and, who knows, could be more than that with a few years of seasoning.

i just thought of something earlier. I wonder if he's named after Tom Landry.

Quality QB's were plentiful in the late rounds. Gradkowski will be a career back up and nothing more from here on out. Why not get someopne in there who may eventually challenge Ben. Not immediately but when the contract comes up the Steelers just may have leverage if Landry looks good.

I dont see why sooo many of you are surprised/etc with this pick...its been known for months now that they would be looking to add a QB from the draft. I think even the Steelers themselves stated this. Batch and Lefty are gone...the end. Though I could see them bringing in Charlie for camp maybe...but who knows. Just about every position they picked (and even some of the players) were not one bit surprising this year. And as I've said before...he was high enough on their board and felt comfortable taking him there. Thats all there is to it. I think he will do just fine.

For me, this is one of those cases of "watch what you ask for, you just might get it"...
I had been wondering if it was time to think about drafting Ben`s replacement. Even last year.
After posting a few questions about it, I had pretty much come around to other posters` way of thinking, that Ben is gonna be here for at LEAST five more years, barring major injury.
Also, a backup qb, really doesn`t get much experience(hopefully), even gets very limited reps in practice(at least with the first stringers, and pretty limited overall).
On top of which, if he really is that talented, he`s not gonna settle for sitting on the bench for long, and is gonna go somewhere that offers him a chance to be a starter.
All that said, I still like this pick.
I think it`s obvious most of us feel it`s time to move on from Batch and Lefty.
Personally, I don`t have faith in Lefty at all, and as much as I hate to say it, I think Charlie is just too old to take the punishment, now, although he has done quite well when needed, even recently, and has gotten up from some tough shots no worse for wear.
Gradkowski? Meh... He`s a vet, and has experience, but I don`t feel as confident in him, as I did Batch.
From what I`ve seen/heard/read about Landry, he could be the perfect qb, to come in, and grow on the sidelines, and still give us a good chance to win multiple games, if Ben has a fairly serious injury.
Maybe Gradkowski would be #2 this year, but maybe not after that.
And as cynical as it sounds, I have to agree with the previous poster, that mentioned it may give the Steelers a little more leverage when it does come time for Ben`s next contract.
At the very least, I think it would be a good thing to give him someone that is serious competition, to keep him sharp.
Whether this kid is all that, I don`t know, but if he is, I see it as nothing but a good thing, with very little risk.
At worst, maybe we could have picked a player more likely to see the field, but I`m not sure who was available, that would have been a better use of the pick.
I think it was a good choice.
    GO STEELERS!

The cynic in me. Will there even be another contract for Ben? The Steelers have always let aging high priced vets go and Ben would fit that mold. He's been sacked a ton and hasn't played a full season in 3 or 4 years. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they passed on paying a 34-35 year old Roethlisberger 20-30 million a year. For those of you with reading comprehension problems. Nowhere does it say I want this to happen just that it wouldn't be surprising if it does.

I think the Steelers wanted a viable backup to Ben and somebody that could develop into a legitimate starter. Jones has some skill and he's in a great situation with not having to play right away. This shows the Steelers are at least thinking about life after Ben but hopefully that's a few successful years away.

I doubt Haley will be here long enough for this kid to benefit from his system. Haley will either do good and get a HC offer or do bad and get canned.

that could go with any player drafted into this system. it doesn't change the fact that he's talented. we don't know whats going to happen here. if he ends up better then grad it's a win.
