If Jones falters this season should Washington give up playing TE and fully commit to being a lineman?

Tackles don’t catch TDs Tight Ends do

    TDs score points

    Points win games

I believe he could be a major force catching passes and it already looks like he is getting better

It would be nice but I have been hearing that pre draft, his first year and then his second year.

Don’t think he will ever be Gronk. And it could also just be as Washington said, there are other people better qualified for that roll. His roll is blocking with some catches sprinkled in.

Well that’s the point of the thread, the writer of the article already feels he may be the best tackle on the team. That wouldnt be a project.

Start feeding him like a lineman, beef him up, doesn’t have far to go and maybe he would be a very good tackle.

Of course I am only suggesting this if Jones fails.

The issue hasn't been with Darnell Washington entirely. The issue has been Pittsburghs piss poor construction of building a competent NFL Offense. Was Pickett ever gonna be the one?! Not likely. That said, having a literal dumbass in Matt Canada as an OC sure as hell didn't help. Darnell is an unfortunate microcosm of that situation as a whole.

He was regarded as close to Gronk as anyone coming out. How his career has played out is not 100% his fault. Sure, he could have done some better conditioning in year two as Alfredo Robert's once said he was close to playing to 300lbs. However, given how disjointed the Offense was, even under Arthur Smith in Year One was, more than likely Darnell thought he would be used more for blocking.

None of this though is accounting for Broderick Jones playing out of position; something a lot of people miss as he only had 15 full time total starts in college as a Left Tackle. Need I remind people again that Offensive Tackles taken that high usually have 25+ full time starts. Broderick is an extreme exception. Hell, Troy Fautanu has more overall experience despite never playing Right Tackle; 28 games as a full time starter. For that matter, Fautanu was rated a lot higher than Broderick coming out.

Overall, the issue isn't as simple as Darnell Washington transitioning to Offensive Tackle. The core issue was and still is Pittsburgh overall lack of competency, structure and organization to construct an NFL Offense. We shall see how Arthur Smith looks in Year Two but the biggest issue is at the signal caller. Until Pittsburgh drafts one and properly develops one (hint hint), these issues shall continue to not only surface but get worse.

The Qbs are why Washington hasn't been fed more, as we have seen in just a few games last year. As soon as the Qb was changed. Washington's targets doubled. I bet Rodgers makes use of him. Also it's not bad to be a TE that can block well, and then the D can't key on him when he does go out.

I think it’s more of what Washington said, they have other people to be the receiving TE’s. Washingtons job is primarily to block.

They have Muth and now brought in Jonnu. I don’t think even with Rodgers that Washington will see many more passes.

a good blocking TE is a huge plus. Making him into a tackle would be an even bigger project than jones. Linemen were not near as big back when the Steelers did it with brown in the 70's.

Absolutely not, he is a mismatch at TE, if only they threw him the ball.
