If they put him on IR now could he still be activated later in the year? If Rodgers gets hurt I’d like him to be backing up Mason rather than Sky Thompson who has proven he’s not a real NFL starter.

In the worst case scenario,if the steelers start the season 2-6,the steelers are going to need a good look at Howard for the rest of the season.....

If they put him on IR with a designation to return he can be activated later in the year.

Wrong, Mason would be next man up. I doubt they see Howard as their next franchise QB.

If the steelers start 2-6,which is unlikely but if this is the case, they need to start the evaluation in your entire roster instead to try to continue the streak of the non losing season

Newsflash: starting the season 2-6 doesn't mean you're out of the playoff race. They won't give up on the season and it has nothing to do with a streak of non-losing seasons .

The chance to make the playoffs after a 2-6 start are slim to none if you are not in a very weak division

    Yes.

In the NFL, the Injured Reserve (IR) list allows teams to free up roster spots for injured players while still counting their salaries against the salary cap. Players on IR must miss a minimum of four games, and teams can designate up to eight players to return from IR during the regular season, with an additional two allowed for the postseason. Once designated to return, a player has a 21-day window to practice and then be activated to the 53-man roster, or they revert to season-ending IR.

What I don't know is how long you can keep someone on IR. In Howard's case, he has a bad finger. It is not realistic to think it is a 16 week injury. So, is there a point where someone says "Hey, why is he on IR since he is obviously fully healed?".

But I think you need to wait after you make your 53 man roster before to put a player on I.R,if you want this player return during the season

    Maybe I am wrong?

Players can be healed and practice teams can open up the 21 day window, it doesn't mean the team has to activate the player Roman Wilson last year.

Winner. That's only 8 games of a 17 game season. So not even half the games.
