My thoughts on preseason wk 1

I concur with your assessments. My add ones are:

Forget Roc what about Hurleman.

Forget about little Heyward. Like literally. He wouldn’t be on this team if not for big brother. He isn’t a fit. He gets blown up on blocks. He is easily replaceable on the receiving end.

Harmon was a let down for how hyped he was. I get it no game plan and one game.

Will we ever figure out how to run block as a unit?

Loved the passing game. Efficient and methodical.

We better use Washington more in regular season in passing game.

Pleasantly surprised with first team oline pass blocking.

Run defense was meh.

I get the defense is very vanilla this time of year and we don’t scout or game plan the other team. I do however anticipate a crazy aggressive defense this year in the regular season.

Finally don’t discard Thompson if he continues to do well in favor of Howard unless Howard shows us something.

 

You can't complain about what players are used, and whether they need more time together, and in the same breath say nothing matters because it's preseason, it's all vanilla, and mostly against backup. You are then arguing with yourself.

My thoughts on pre-season week 1:

The season is one week closer.


One thing I will say is how much I have enjoyed taking the off-season "off" pretty much, barring draft week and how much i'm looking foward to the new season and feel refreshed for taking a break.

I don't known whether I am optimistic or pessimistic really, but I think it's going to be really intruiging this year, which I haven't felt for a long time.

I didn't really want Rodgers entering the off-season, but happy enough with a one year deal, and it makes the Steelers season more interesting than it would have been with anyone else under center.

3. I thought they did a decent job. I've seen pre-season games where teams were all over the place.
5 a. In his defense he went 9 for 10 for 84 yards with a TD
5 b. For some reason I thought Thompson would put pressure on himself and be average at best. I was wrong.

A good TE would be huge for Steelers O.

 

Rudolph looked like he came straight from a 70's porn shoot.

 

Why cant we draft a RB that can run for more than 4 yrds at atime

 

I wouldn't worry about it just yet let's see the whole OL play together, Warren is the likely starter at RB.

 

Guess I'm not as down on Johnson as some fans. I thought he did as expected with a backup OL against starter DL. He was hesitant on some runs but also showed some nice power to move the pile on a few. His 3rd down run for a first was nice.

 

My favorite part of the pre-season game was when the sound blanked out 3 or so times (at least on NFL+) and we didn't have to listen to the J-Ville guys drooling and gushing over the rookie two-wayer.

 

Indeed the o Line needs work in the run blocking department. Pass blocking was ok. Hopefully Jones comes into his own this year. Thats all i got from this game.

How could you miss Mason's porn stache??

 

I was amazed when I saw his stat of 9/10.... it felt very different.
He missed some reads, and took a terrible sack, holding the ball.
But we'll see.

I think Aaron sported the stache not long ago. But Mason's stache is very loud even with the facemask on.

Is Howard going to IR?

 

Yep.... the same rookie 2 way player that looked silly whiffing while trying to tackle Kaleb Johnson

 

Can't wait to see a league official show up with a plastic cup knocking on the Jags door. Lol

 

Howard to IR might be an option considering we may have a 3rd QB, would we risk Howard to the practice squad? What if another team claims him?

 

A few points that I did not see mentioned:

I thought that Sermon had a good game at rb. Seeing holes and good burst.

Lot of high right snaps.

Skylar had some funky throws. Not even sure how to do it. Spiral with the nose of the ball down, but not leading the ball. Somewhere between a normal spiral and the ball flying sideways. Not an aerodynamic throw. But he made it mostly work.

It will be criminal if Mount Washington does not see some contested catch plays at the goal line.

On the first pass play, my wife exclaimed "omg, they threw to the middle!".....lol
