Ballard is a slower watch than Bosch but it gets more interesting as it goes on. Maggie Q is a good pick for this part. You'll see some familiar faces as it goes on which is cool.

No. I shut My MGM off for Stars, because I thought Spartacus was starting this summer, but now they say autumn.

Started watching Alone again. It’s the only reality tv I’ll watch. Since the contestants are alone in the wilderness and do their own filming there’s none of the drama of every other reality show out there

I've seen previews for it, but never watched it, I just figured it was like all reality shows.

It’s actually kind of cool. Sometime in the not too distant future I’ll be moving from Georgia to my land in Nevada. Love being off grid etc.

Cliff’s notes for alone. They take 10-12 contestants and drop them off in a very rural area. You’re given a list of items you can choose from to bring along with you. Think ferro rod, fishing line and hooks, tarp… . Most of the seasons I’ve seen are set in interesting locaations. Vancouver island, Mongolia, Patagonia. The current season is in South Africa. You’re dropped off alone and have to hunt/forage/fish/trap for food. You have to build your own shelter. As I said before contestants film themselves. Last man/woman standing wins 500k. It might sound easy to some, but they seem to schedule it in late fall so contestants get a week or two of decent weather and then comes the snow and freezing temps.

I had actually stopped watching because they broke the format. They did a couple seasons where the contestants weren’t actually alone. Husband and wife team or two brothers etc.

Tip for anyone out there that wants to try and actually makes it onto the show. Do not expel a bunch of energy building some elaborate shelter. Keep it simple.

here’s a before and after photo of a contestant that got medically evacuated. The guy had something like 40 fish processed and preserved, but wasn’t eating them he was saving them for emergency. Well he had starved himself to the point his body was shutting down.

    Why wasn't he eating them.
I could do it anywhere for a few weeks, I have tested this, but after that, I need my so called comforts, and would break down.

Apparently he thought it was a sound decision. Didn’t realize he had put himself in signifcant danger. At some point each season a medical team will show up and give each contestant a medical evaluation. At that point it’s up to them whether you stay or go. Frostbite, hypothermia, starvation have all taken out contestants

I liked the dude* on Season 9 who won. He essentially ate nothing for the last 30 days but maybe a few plant items. He was heavy to begin with and he and his Lady (wife?) would practice starving themselves for long periods to prep for the series. It worked. You're right about some of the "expert" craftsmen who waste so much time and energy of their nifty shelters only to burn out just from that, never gathering rations.

    *Juan Pablo Quiñonez
won Season 9 of the History Channel's reality series Alone.
He outlasted the other contestants in the subarctic wilderness of Labrador, Canada, surviving for 78 days. Quiñonez's survival skills and mental fortitude were put to the test against harsh weather conditions, isolation, and dangerous predators like polar bears.
He is a survival specialist, outdoor professional, and wilderness first responder from Pinawa, Manitoba, Canada. Quiñonez, the first Latino winner of Alone, expressed a strong connection to the land and a passion for pushing his limits in the wilderness.

I haven’t watched that season yet. I picked up on the current season(12) and am simultaneously watching season 11. Think one of the saddest moments of the show was the guy that tapped out on the first day. That might have been season 1. Why did he tap out? He saw bear scat and said nope that’s it for me and picked up the sat phone

That was hilarious when that happened. So many tap out cause they miss their spouses and/or kids and miss a birthday, even when they're well set with food and shelter. You'd think they'd know this in advance, especially with $1/2 mil on the line. Still a really good show. Didn't care for the spinoff Aussie edition much - too many lightweights.

I might have spoken too soon on the shelter thing. A guy in season 11 made a badass shelter, then took a bull moose, and now he’s slaying fish.

The Institute on MGM is pretty good. Good young actors. It's based on The Institute novel by Stephen King.

It’s a similar premise to naked and afraid. With one huge advantage imo, no drama.

basically there are 10-12 contestants that are experienced with wilderness survival, bush raft etc. Each contestant is dropped off alone with minimal gear. There is a list of what clothing they’re allowed to bring and then each contestant can pick 10 additional items from a list. The list consists of things like ferro rods, tarp, cordage, axe, shovel…. They’re then dropped off individually in remote areas- Mongolia, Patagonia, arctic circle… The current season is set in South Africa. You have to build your own shelter. Hunt/fish/forage/trap for food. Purify water. The whole 9 yards. They also self film everything. So there’s no crew nearby filming them. Last person standing wins 500k. I stopped watching when they abandoned the alone aspect and started having pairs. Just started watching again as they returned to the contestants doing it solo.

here’s the list of what they’re allowed to bring and the list of the 10 additional items they can choose from.

I stopped at Cujo. Salem's Lot and The Stand in my top 10 of novels I read and I read a ton of books. TV did an amazing job when they made a 2 part series for Salem's Lot.
