Dick Hoak one of my boyhood heroes. A Pittsburgher through and through. Played HS ball for Jeanette, played for the Nittany Lions, 10 years playing for the Steelers and 36 years as a Steeler coach. Hoak had one of the greatest bowl games in history when Penn State beat Oregon in the Liberty Bowl in 1961. He threw 2 TD passes, ran for 2 more and while playing safety picked off 2 passes in the game.

 

I always liked him as well - the running game dropped off quite a bit after he hung it up as a coach.

Remember when the Pirates and Steelers both had a Hoak on their teams? Trying to remember the Gunner's nickname for Don Hoak.

 

Must admit a tiny bit of football life creeping back into by bones.

Don Hoak was called "Tiger". Some trivia about Don Hoak, his daughter Claire was a cover girl model back in the 90's and played the mobsters girlfriend who was shot in the movie within the movie in "Home Alone 2".
