The Steelers have two young tackles and they don't know if these guys are ready to be legit starters, they still haven't figured out who will be the left or right tackle between these two. Gilbert will probably play left all he showed was that he is capable of injuring his own teammates after falling on them, and Adams looked over matched against the pass rush. Big Ben is in his prime and he has two inexperienced tackles if they struggle the team will be calling Max Starks.

All I can say to this, is Starks saved our bacon, when called upon, before, and he is one of Ben`s fave`s..
But I highly doubt he will be available to come "play superman", partway thru this season, if BOTH of these kids fall on their cans.
Both are young, and unproven, but I sure as hell hope one or both of them gets it right this year.
No, that is not a "ringing endorsement of faith", but, Adams will be in his second year, Gilbert in his third.
Hopefully they will show the improvement expected of players drafted as high as they were...
Actually, without being a coach, or breaking down game film, play by play, just from a general impression, I would rate Adams a bit ahead of Gilbert at this point.
Yes he has weaknesses, but at least he didn`t fall over/get pushed into his teammates` legs, causing injuries...
Could be random luck, and Gilbert could have an outstanding season, this year,
But that`s more hope, than faith...
I Have more faith, that Adams will learn and improve, given how bad he wants to play for his boyhood favorite team,
But, then again, that could be more hope, than faith, since I`m a Buckeye fan, and Santonio left a bad taste in my mouth while here, and moreso, talkin crap about us, after he left...(Even if he did make one of the best catches in Superbowl history, to bring us our 6th...)...
Honestly, I have more faith in DeCastro, even tho he is a guard, and I really know very little about him, based on how hyped all the other members here were that we got him...
assume his ceiling is higher than either of the tackles`...
A lotta unproven potential on the line this year, but then again, Ben was unproven when he got forced into service after Tommy went down...
    GO STEELERS!:herewego!:

Tomlin and company disagree with you.

“I think one of the things that we learned through the trials of the 2012 season is that both of those young men are capable of playing both spots,” Tomlin said, according to the club. “We will use the spring and the summer to sort out where we play those two at, but both guys have shown that they are capable of being viable left tackles and right tackle-like candidates.”

I hope they make Adams LT....he is stronger and more athletic. All he needs is to get adjusted to the NFL and the sky is the limit.

I would love to upgrade Foster though and then make Foster the swing guard/tackle.

I am confident about them both until shown otherwise.

Gilbert had a great rookie season...and had some bad moments last year and get bashed cause he injured his teammates/etc (which I still think is unfair...as crap happens).

Adams started to settle in at RT last year too...he did at times have help from a TE and such but not as much as people think.

I think they both will only get better with more playing time.

I would keep Starks on speed dial. Gilbert will play left tackle this year but Adams can move him over to the right side if he gets better. Adams did well last year in the run blocking department but failed in the pass protection. I think Gilbert would be better at left tackle for now based on how they both played. But neither one of them makes me think we are settled at the tackle spot.

Except that Scott became the starter due to injury.

I have no confidence in Gilbert and Adams makes me nervous in the passing game. I don't worry about Adams in the running game, I think he'll learn to be a very effective run blocker.

I'd echo GP. They have to prove to me that they can't handle it. I wouldn't mind seeing Gilbert on the left side. Maybe like Max Starks, he is a better fit there than at RT.

In saying all of this though, I am a big Starks supporter, and would not hesitate to bring him back as the swing tackle. Never understood why this guy can't find work unless we call.

I might be in the minority here, but from what I saw out of Gilbert last year I think I'd rather have Beachum starting. I wasn't really even blown away by him in his rookie season. But, being as where Gilbert was drafted, I think they don't have much of a choice but to play him if he is healthy.

On a confidence scale of 1-10? I'd say I'm at a 7. I don't think the issue is their talent; I think the issue with the Steelers' line is one of coaching and conditioning, because in all of the years under Noll and Cowher, the one thing you could NEVER say was that the line was regularly ineffective and injury-prone. We have been able to say it with Tomlin. Coincidence?

adams has much more upside, but is far from a finished product, and needs more schooling on how to use his hands... I have high hopes for him though........................................................ gilbert, imho, on the other hand, is a bust....... I have been very vocal on this board about my disdain for gilbert's game, and will stand by those statements rather than reiterate them again. I sincerely would like to see adams at lt, foster at right, and draft our starting lg if possible......... gilbert is nothing more than a back-up/ emergency starter. it's about time the coaches make it happen

I agree. That's not to say they are guaranteed to turn in HOF-level performances next season, of course. But I have confidence that they both have a good base ability and the strong possiblity of imrpovement.

Holy crap guys, he's played all of 18 games and he's a bust? What is that based on? I sure hope it's not just disdain for the freaky bad luck of hurting some of our guys. You don't give up on a 2nd round pick after basically 1 season of play, those kind of rash decisions hurt you in the long run.

I am as confident in them as I am the full team. About 6.5 to 7. But at some point the training wheels need to come off and they need to be thrown to the Wolves. Both have in the past played solid so I am optomistic.

Nothing coincidental about it. Some coaches never have bad Olines and some coaches can't seem to ever have a good Oline. Look at Shanahan, that guy uses schemes to make his Oline good, even if the talent isn't there. Shanahan could turn me into a 1,000 yard rusher. Tomlin on the other hand can't seem to get his Oline to do anything useful. I'm starting to think it's not really about talent anymore and it's all about coaching. How many more years are we going to keep blaming the players rather than looking at the bigger picture?

31 other coaches and GM's aren't interested in him for a reason. Enough with settling for mediocre play, we need to expect more from our OL.
