I'm not saying this is so, but maybe they have some faith in Howard, and believe that throwing him to the wolves is a bad Idea, and they would like him to learn a full year before attempting to play, and now with Rodgers, and Mason, unless we've a series of unfortunate events, he shouldn't have to. No we won't see him against other teams unless that happens, but that doesn't mean they aren't watching his progress throughout the year.
I'm not saying this is happening, but it maybe.

Starting Howard could be disastrous for him long term

 

True. I'd also add that maintaining a consistently competitive team takes thinking about things perpetually. Eyes on upcoming contract extensions, draft classes, and free agent classes can factor in current decisions. Teams that think they're close enough to make a serious run at a championship may choose to leverage some of the future to add to the present, but there are different shades to the meaning when a team says 'we're trying to win a Super Bowl.'

 

I am in no way saying Howard should start this year. Mason is also youth compared to Wilson and Rodgers. If we are bringing in an old qb then he should be here to backup and help teach the future. Even if we draft a new qb next year the progression should apply to him as well. Rodgers will be gone and we will be back to square one. What have we really gained? If we are going to keep bringing in old qbs then quit drafting young one's.

 

Well at the very least Howard will have gained seeing how a HOF Qb plays, and Mason will see how a 2nd HOF Qb plays.

we missed on him. He's in New Orleans or somewhere. Maybe we just pick up Flacco or the red rifle. Maybe get the one closer to 50.

i'm sure there may be something but i don't believe he will be here to teach him. he didn't do much of that with jordan love in green bay. just like ben didn't do much with mason. i think mason will help the kid more. but really to what end? rodgers will be gone and we will probably draft a new one next year so where does that put him really? they may bring in a vet as well next year. when would howard get his chance?

 

We have no clue for sure if we will draft a Qb in the 1st round next year, and I'm not saying we won't, but it's not a 100% thing. Nobody knows the future. Also A. Rodgers shouldn't have to take him aside, and talk him through everything. The starter must be worried about other things, but Howard can learn a lot from just keeping his eyes, ears, and mind open

 

Howard's path is setting up to be a career backup similar to Rudolph. Sometimes being in the wrong place at the wrong time is all it takes.

Taking a year or two to improve his game might do him good. On Howard's fall in the draft:

“I don’t know if there’s anything specific fatally as far as the flaw, it’s just inconsistency. The same description can be used on [Jalen] Milroe,” Palazzolo said on 93.7 The Fan. “There were some games where his accuracy is all over the place… He will overthrow receivers over the middle of the field a couple times a game it seems. And his arm is not great. It’s good. I think he’s been touted as having a big arm, but it’s not great. It’s fine. And the athleticism is kind of like a lower-end Daniel Jones.”

 

So the first day of 'Mandatory OTA's' kicked off.
I have to say, Rogers looked spry out there. There's nothing wrong with his arm, that's a fact.
I liked the fact that he and Will Howard seem to have already found common ground. Will is very smart to take advantage of this.
I don't want to discount Mason, he's in there too, it's just that the focus will be Rogers/Howard.
I don't know why some reporters just spin everything negative, Rogers said all the right things and backed them up with actions and proved so on the field.
The big issue now is the helmet. That should be a no-brainer as the wrong helmet can feel and look like Rick Moranis' character Dark Helmet in the movie Space Balls.
The one he wore kind of seemed that way.

I'm not a fan of Teryl Austin and I don't see him as any kind of expert and lord knows Rogers destroyed his defenses time and time again.
But what I am getting at is I saw some interview with him talking about Rogers and how/if he has changed.
The interviewer was wanting a spin on how much Rogers has lost in his game and Austin was very reluctant to buy into that.
It's a natural thing to compare Brady and Rogers since they both were 40+ but their games are different.
Brady couldn't outrun a fireplug. The Bucs has to build a wall around him and they were successful.
Rogers can still move, he's more athletic than Brady. But the Steelers better take a page from the Bucs in protection.
I think they will by using the run game. I think Rogers can open it up with those darts to slants and taking legit shots downfield.

My concern is as the season wears on.

If we see him in the regular season we either got really really really lucky or really really really unlucky

But I hope we see more of Rodgers than one series in the first two games and nothing in the third

Then they start the season with no timing or rhythm

 

The latter is more likely than the prior

Nothing against Howard but once the season starts he will have little chance to leapfrog anyone

I'm kinda split in my thinking of this.
On one hand I'd like to see him(Rodgers) get a lot of snaps, and on the other, I'm afraid to lose him because of a meaningless preseason game.
I can see both side of this.

Also You can't count last year, because the guy that took most of the reps played the 1st six games.

 

This has plagued the Bengals for years. They completely blow off pre-season ever year and start the regular season sluggish as heck. They usually catch fire late in the season but their slow starts have them so far behind that they haven't even made the playoffs the last couple of years.
