So now that mock drafts are coming up I saw 2 on the NFL network that have the Steelers taking Jarvis Jones as their first pick. My question to you is, do you really think the Steelers are going to take a LB early on or do they go DB, DL, or best player available regardless of position?

Barring crazy trades, which always throws a kink in the draft...I think we'll end up with either Jones or Vaccaro

Something tells me Jones won't be the pick. By all accounts if he's there, he'd be a great value but a number of things just give me a hunch it's not going to be him.

    - He'd be the oldest rookie Tomlin's ever drafted, and 2nd oldest for Colbert (in round 1).

    - We never take OLB's in round 1 because it's a tough transition to make in our scheme. I know he's played LB in college, but Lebeau's scheme is another animal.

    - Jason Worilds was a high pick, and I think they give him this year to shine or get kicked the the curb.

    - Jones' medical question marks

I plan on posting my final mock next week, and right now I'm leaning towards Vacarro (who's backing up Clark and Polamalu right now?).

To me, drafting Jones would be an admission that Woodley will not be here after next year. Since we have restructured him, I don't think that will happen.

Why necessarily would it be an admission that Woodley will not be here? Why not more along the lines of we don't know what Worilds will do this year, which is a contract year for him? If he doesn't perform well, we have Jones for 2014. If he performs at a very high level, we may not be able to sign him and then once again...we have Jones for 2014.

I could see that as well, but I really think they like Worilds, especially on the side that Woodley is on now. I guess to me it is more about my gut. I don't truly believe they take an OLB in the first round this year. I think they like Woodley, and Worilds, and Carter, and Robinson. I think they look S or ILB on D. TE, WR, or Oline on O.

My gut tells me that we will not draft Jones, even if he's there for us at #17. I like him, but on tape he gets washed out of a lot of running plays. He is very disruptive attacking the backfield, but in run defense he tends to get engaged and taken out of plays very easily for a 1st round prospect. Personally, I may be able to live with that if he makes enough splash plays in the backfield, but LeBeau loves strong OLBs who can set the edge in run defense. My guess is that LeBeau has already said "no thanks" on Jones to our front office.

I agree with everything here, also he does not have much of a burst in terms of speed? Jones would be starting at ROLB. Porter, Lloyd, Harrison: All had a quick first step and speed off the edge.

I think he's very quick off the edge. His 4.9 second 40 is pretty much irrelevant in my mind when watching how he moves on the field. When he makes splash plays, it's usually through quickness. His quickness is very good for a 3-4 OLB, but his lack of anchoring strength is the problem that I see.

How well does Von Miller anchor in the run game? Would you want him on the Steelers? If Jones is there at #17 I would be stunned if the Steelers passed on him. I still think he is gone before #17, and the Steelers settle on Vacarro, which I don't really like.

Carter has been a big disappoiintment. He is just in-effective plain and simple. Worilds has shown in limited play he can make things happen. He can also play both sides.

Jones isn't a measureables ( combine ) standout but his tape shows he makes plays and is disruptive. If we still had James this would be an easy question. Without James we have tow OLB who are injury prone and you expect them to miss games. One is a vet and the other is in his final rookie contract year. There is zero quality OLBer back-ups.

Yes, if Jones is there we'll take him. There's a Greater chance Vaccaro will be gone and if he is there when we pick I'm sure that's when we'll get offers to move down and hopefully we do this.

Jones is a nice player, but he's no Von Miller. They may be similar anchoring against the run, but Miller looked way more explosive getting into the backfield on tape as a prospect - not only in terms of quickness, but also in terms of strength when pushing against blockers. Hey, if he falls to us and we take him, I hope you're right about him. However, I think he's more of a solid 10-12 sack/year guy than a DPOY candidate. Good, but not special.

Yes I have.. There has been significant interest by the Steelers however. They have had a private workout with Jones and I would have to believe that team physicians have looked at his medical condition in a detailed fashion. The only question mark for me on Jones is the medical red flag, he can flat out play. So if he passes the med check I think the Steelers will take him at 17, if available..
