Moore was going to play the whole season because he was the better option

Fautanu getting hurt just gave Jones the chance to get snaps

Meyer is responsible for player development. Blame for player position might be Tomlin's.

There are scouting reports that said Jones was a better RT prospect in the pros than a LT. If Jones regresses it won't be a good sign for him or the Steelers. But if he puts in the work Tomlin is known for his patience in letting a guy show what he's got.
For the QB room's sake, gotta hope Jones shows early rather than later.

This doesn't make sense. If you were ,hypothetically, representing a player who showed better performance metrics than Moore next offseason, you don't think you'd be pushing for your client to receive a larger contract than he did?

I think Moore was full of crap when he said he couldn't play RT, he knew if he stayed at LT and hit free agency he was going to get paid ;).

That was probably Jones secret attack last year

I’ll just suck at RT and then they will move me to LT and I can cash in a couple of years from now

    Brilliant

As stated before, if agents really want something to look forward to, the extensions of Charles Cross and Ikem Ekwonu are far more appeasing. Both will have greater APY than Dan Moore. For that matter, I expect either or to tie for being the highest paid or even reset the market.

I am fully aware of Pat Meyer.

Dunno if you have been following me in terms of threads regarding the Offensive Line or better yet, during the conclusion of the 2024 season but I wanted Meyer out the second the season was over. Clearly the FO sees something in Meyer that many of us as fans do not. I hope I am wrong but there has been little evidence to suggest otherwise.

Agreed. If he struggles it would be a major setback. I don't know what Meyer's coaching was last season for Jones but he looked totally different in his approach and took a step down. Moving to the left side best cure the ills. Still i don't trust Meyer. Wanted him replaced.

And since it seems they are going all in on a QB in next years draft getting another tackle day one is out and possibly day two depending what they would have to give up to move up in the 1st. Unless organically they have a losing season.

Come on, man. You're ignoring the floor for the ceiling. Both matter in negotiations - not everyone is going to be the market-setter.

Me personally, I don’t have much faith in Jones. I hope we have a plan b if things go sideways this year.

    I am not actually.

Once that new ceiling is met, that is where most agents are going to target. Again, it needs to be said that Christian Kirk, once upon a time, reset the WR Market. Prices for WR went right up after. The second that either Cross or Ekwoni sign, the OT Market as a whole is going to explode.

As we have both agreed upon, even solid starter OT performance will command a very high penny; top 10 in Moores case. With that in mind, whatever the floor is today means nothing tomorrow when those deals are finalized between Charles and Ikem. To conclude?!

Dan Moores contract is nothing more than a sign of whats to come for the APY of Offensive Tackles. For that matter, Tennessee doing this deal now puts more pressure on both Seattle and Carolina. Whomever gets their guy signed sooner will benefit the other.

What they see is probably a guy willing to work for cheap.

It's crazy other teams seem to be able to find competent coaches and the Steelers, especially OL, have been dismal. Read somewhere that Tomlin spends far more time with players than he does with his staff. This is as opposed to someone like Reid who is known for a lot staff meetings, i.e, coaching the coaches. This is probably why Tomlin's coaching 'tree' looks like a Charlie Brown Christmas tree.

Again, you're missing the dynamic. Sure, people look to the ceiling, but they also look at the floor - it sets the general boundaries for negotiations. And those two numbers share a relationship. The market, in terms of highest APY, isn't always reset each year, which means contracts like Moore's can be boosted by current trend while also serving to elevate the asking price of the next wave of OTs.

Over the past 10 years, the salary cap has increased by 92%. Here's a breakdown of the increase in APY of the highest-paid player by position over that time. As you can see, the offensive line is already booming. This undoubtedly played a part in Moore receiving the contract that he did. But given his questionable metrics he's likely to be used to bump the asking price of others next year, even though he didn't reset the number at the top.

If an agent is merely looking at the floor for a premium position, that isn't good financial sense at all. Whether or not the APY for the YoY for the NFL increases greatly or not is also not the entirety of this. Aiming for the ceiling, as an agent, is the top priority.

Anything less than that is unacceptable.

Dude. If you're repping Sam Darnold this offseason and are telling teams the bidding starts with Prescott's $60M APY, you're getting laughed out of every front office you visit.

No where did I say that the floor holds the premium position. Or that you only look at the floor. There's an entire dynamic you study so that you're in the best position possible to get the most for your client - not just APY, but things like length of contract, guaranteed dollars, incentives, injury provisions, etc.

Can go either way on Dan Moore resetting the market. Would have made the comp pick a little better if he did.

I think a lot of people are wrong on Dan Moore.
I don't really know what people expect from a LT, or a RT???
Many times when He would take His man up the field, our Qbs would be drifting into that lane. Many, many many, LTs, and RTs take their men up field past the Qb, but it's a move that our LTs, and RTs haven't been able to do since Ben, because all the other Qbs with the most playing time since He left, just love to drift left or right out of the pocket, instead of stepping up in it.

Dan wasn't great, but I think he was serviceable. If there rest of our line was actually competent and we had good QB play, Dan wouldn't look so bad.

Agree. If I'm an OT agent, I go into a negotiation and say "Look at what Dan Moore got and look at his stats. My guy is twice the player he is. Don't call me unless you are far north of Moore's contract".

btw, kinda surprised that the CB market hasn't risen in sync with the rest of the defense. Wonder why?

Yeah, but would have been a slam dunk...we'll see though, somehow it feels like they find a way top mess up the compensation formula every year.

Resetting the market would have made him the highest paid. That didn't happen. I am saying two other Offensive Tackles will either be close to or are reset the market.

Jones stunk at RT last season, and I don't expect him to do much better at LT this season. Hope I'm wrong. Jones is a borderline bust, and this season is do or die for him. Also, we don't even know if Fautanu is going to be any good yet, so it could be a very long year for the offensive line. I can understand why Rodgers is so hesitant to sign with the Steelers, doubly so when you only have 1 WR to throw to (just like last year).

Since moving him to LT it will be recognized immediately if they have the guy since all of the excuses in the world will now be forever gone.
