The same Cowherd who said before the draft his source told him the Steelers would draft Jalen Milroe in round one .

so you don't believe tomlin has that kind of say so? i was quoting it when blast was talking about us losing weidl down the road. i said if he has little say so i could see why we may lose him. why wouldn't he move on. there are many GM's that have built contenders and let the coaches coach their decisions. that doesn't seem to be the case here near as much as other teams with a lot more success. 43 then took my post and made a new thread about the post.

Some more of the ......Cheapest team in the NFL, somehow likes to Pay GMs, and their assistance to do nothing. LoL.
I don't know how people can believe these people's narratives. You can't preach, and write about how we are the cheapest team, and yet we hire all these people to do nothing. LoL. You can't have it both ways.
Again.....the only HCs that have full control over their rosters ,are also the GMs, and even they have owners who have the last say.
Ask Belichick who was the actual HC, and GM. When he tried to get rid of Brady earlier, the owner said no.

this is funny why STD? i said a long time ago that i didn't think colbert and tomlin would be a good drafting tandum and caught all kind of heck over it. i still believe that. i wasn't all that high on colbert. MT has his hands also involved with it in so many failed first rounders. we have had many bad picks. i will go out on a limb and say probably more than most any team. i do belive art2 also overly loves MT and what his vision is over our GM's. they have their value, and so does MT in some things but we have many, many failures under him and art2. we see many good GM's taking the lead for contending teams and not the head coach.

It's funny because You people can't have it both ways.
You can't have the team is the cheapest on one hand, and on the other they Hire GMs, and assistance for nothing.
You can't on one hand say Khan makes great draft picks, and on the other hand say, Tomlin does it all.
You can't on one hand say the Rooneys do whatever Tomlin says, and yet they have never made him the GM, and HC like other teams have done before.
Simply.......You can't have it both ways.
All HCs have some say, but no teams pay for GMs, and their assistance just to look good.
We know that they don't even like to get rid of coaches that are still on a contract, why would they pay a GM that much money, and keep his, and pay his assistance if Tomlin was doing it all????....They could save money, and do like other teams do.....Make Tomlin HC/GM.

Seems the pushback is because it’s coming from Cowherd yet we are basically saying the same thing on this board.

Some of Khans moves are comedy hour. Here we are second year in a row and he has them in the same position at WR as they were last season. How do you not learn that lesson? Now he still may right the ship if he finds a suitable replacement for Pickens before the season starts but he also may be speaking the truth when he says they are happy with the WR room as is. Said the same thing last year, that went great.

To be clear, I have no problem moving on from Pickens in light of the reports coming out, he had to go but for ****s sake stop doing this stuff right before the season starts when the well has dried up. His move was to bring in Woods? He didn’t even bring in the best options, why not Allen? Why not Cooper?

At QB, myself and others thought it was a joke bringing in Wilson and it was. I couldn’t care less about his little stretch of games he played well, let’s talk about how he finished. Yeah, thats who Wilson is and thats why Denver ate all that money to get him out of town and why he barely got a job this offseason.

You jettison Rudolph just to bring him back??? That reeks of desperation or you made a mistake letting him leave, neither is a good look.

They could have easily matched the Jets offer for Fields and they should have. If he fell on his face so what, you would have had Howard to turn to and then a good QB class in 26. Now you are taking the Wilson route again with even an older QB in hopes he can reach back to his younger days and give you something this year. If he ever decides to sign.

So knock Cowherd all you want, he’s not my favorite guy either but hes not Poni and actually has an ear inside the NFL and its not so hard looking at the body of work to believe executives around the league could be laughing at some of Khans moves.

Cowherd's words sounded like where I was at after we made the big splash with Metcalf only to stand down when free agency kicked off. And one need look no further than the Chargers' Minecraft video to see how others perceive what we're doing right now.

The best way I make sense of things - and it still leaves much to be desired - is by seeing them through the lens of a three-year plan. Right now would be the pivot point. Khan has a potential 12 picks to use in next year's draft, on top of sufficient cap space. He's replaced four-fifths of the OL and two-thirds of the DL. He's strengthened the ILBs and brought depth to the EDGE. We don't know yet how some will turn out, but rebuilding the lines was the priority when he and Weidl assumed their roles.

Colbert's attempt to find a QB and establish a plus WR duo on the way out failed. Johnson's attitude was jettisoned last year, and while Pickens was kept at the time, I really think Khan pursuing Aiyuk was an early sign where things were headed. A year later the Metcalf move cemented it. As for the timing and backfill, I don't have answers for all of it. I think they had a certain value on Pickens they weren't willing to go below, and it wasn't until after the draft that they got it.

I try not to get too fixated on not drafting a WR, because I think they see Roman as that. Still, there were some good WRs on the board in the fourth - Ayomanor, Royals, Lane. For whatever reason, money or length of contract, they seem hesitant to sign a bigger name than Woods, so in hindsight it might have been better to go WR over Sawyer there. In reality you'd still be counting on rookie WRs to contribute this year, but you wouldn't be perceived as putting yourself in the same bad position you were in the year before. For what that's worth.

I don't think there's been a clear, ideal move at QB. Personally I'd take Fields over Rodgers, but both are bridges and I wonder if ownership had an issue with the money. Shorter deals and large signing bonuses require more cash up front - maybe Rooney wasn't comfortable with matching the Jets offer. Maybe Tomlin's moving to Wilson put a chip on Fields' shoulder. Bringing Rudolph back as a cheap backup who's familiar with the system I'm alright with; where it's gotten ugly is with the continued Rodgers waiting game. Again, not a good look.

Those looks will appear a lot better if things come together, but Khan's got a LOT riding on the third act. More than perception, there's a lot of money and diminishing player windows already in play. Whatever he chooses to do with the QB and WR2 holes over the next couple of months, how well he navigates next offseason will go a long way in how he's perceived as a GM.

I wonder if the team was considering WR in the 4th, but then Sawyer was there for the taking. I think he was a great long term value pick at that spot and I’m happy that he was the pick. At QB, I was resigned to us likely retaining Fields after last season ended, but I’m glad we didn’t overpay for him. Seems like a great guy and great teammate from all that I read, but the offense looked so disjointed with him at the helm. I am not a fan of Rodgers, but he is realistically the best option available to us for 2025.

When we were on the clock I saw Sawyer first, then began to remember there were a few WRs I hadn't heard called yet. I was double-checking when they announced the pick and went with it, as I figured they were intent on keeping Pickens (partly by way of bypassing a WR right there) unless they moved him at the trade deadline.

I remember watching All-22s of Fields last year, and it was painful at times. Still, I was resigned to the fact that, if they wanted the best team to compete this year, they'd be keeping him. But it's not my money. Outside of him, I don't see a better option outside of Rodgers. Wentz is there, but don't know if he'd agree to Rodgers' 1y/$10M offer, and am not sold he'd be any better.

i could see them counting on some of this UDFA depth, free agents and late round picks this year to gauge where they are for next years draft. who steps up enough to show promise.

thornhill if he gets back to his top ability, and how well minkah plays this year may tell a lot for next year. you have the rookie as depth for elliott as well. seems like they are working down the middle to strengthen the team. adding depth at a minimum.

let's face it, they have to sign TJ, maybe elliott but they will see what's behind them incase. OLB looks stacked. safety not bad especially if castro shows something.

DL. black and harmon. depth wise they have lowry, lee, mangleson was an addition too. the two free new agents as well, ekuale and ottomewo. benton. slade, loudermilk. pretty good shape down the middle. cam's final next year.

ILB. added harrison and bruener along with robinson. queen and wilson and holcomb. pretty good group. again down the middle.

OLB. sawyer, herbig, moon, highsmith, have to sign TJ. loaded.

CB. porter, slay, echols, trice, pierre, kent, bishop, and a few let's see guys.

    offense

    C. have to start with frazier and the re-signing of mccullom, anderson. pretty set down the middle

    G. mccormick, seumalo, scharping, nester, jones, smith, anderson, williams (rookie). not too bad of a start down the middle.

    T. jones, fautanu, anderson, cook, warren (rookie). wait and see down the middle.

wait and see and possibly a depth draft pick next year at tackle or guard within the first 3 rounds. again, see where this goes.

RB. warren, (will have to re-sign), johnson, gainwell, hull, hurleman, ward, sermon. pretty set down the middle.

TE. friermuth, washington, parham, galbreth. not bad down the middle.

    FB. heyward, thomas-jones.

WR. metcalf. wilson, woods, austin, taylor, williams, skowronek, miller, mccutchen, johnson, wouldn't rule out patterson in more of a WR role if kept on maybe the PS. big body and was a pretty good WR before the move to RB. duel role guy. at this stage of his career this may be a better spot than the beating at RB for him if nothing else vet help for the youngsters. see where this goes.

QB. if nothing else we would have good depth by the draft next year. see where this goes.

lots of wait and see and youth and early year players to dissect before next years draft. could come away with needing less than first thought. hopefully a few diamonds in the rough could bolster a few positions. typical reload instead of rebuild. many good players we have had were not cream of the crop top picks over the years.

Cowherd generally has his sources, though he's a opinion guy. He does root it in conversations around the league.
I have gotten that vibe also.
I do agree, though I view it more of that his draft work has been blue collar and not much risk.
He is drafting along the Line of Scrimmage.
Free Agency has been a weak point. He has been here since 2001 so he has acclimated to Pittsburgh not really spending in Free Agency.

The way they've addressed the QB spot is absolutely a reason a lot of GM's would be dismissed.
If not just for the fact of keep Matt Canada as the OC fir Pickett's second year. You draft a QB in the first round, you do everything you can to provide the best chance of success.
I know people around the league hold told them Canada was a joke.
From there, it doesn't get any better. So the track record is there.

Hopefully in 2026, they can change the record and find a guy that can play QB.
Also, hopefully they screen the players a little more to make sure they are sane and want to play football.

Cowherd is exactly right about Tomlin and offense. Tone deaf and incompetent. The results of the past 8 years speak for themselves. Steelers need an offensive mind at HC.

Shanahan, McVey, LaFleur, Reid, Siriani win playoff games and these coaches come from a background in offense. Ryans, Quinn and McDermitt are outliers who happened to score excellent QBs. Chances of playoff success are better in the 2020's and beyond with teams that posess offensive minds at HC.

Noll's longest drought without a playoff win: 4 years ('85-'88)
Cowher's longest drought without a playoff win: 3 years ('98-'00)
Tomlin's current drought without a playoff win: 8 years ('17-present)

So Tomlin has doubled Noll's longest playoff win drought of the often scorned 1980's Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wouldn't you think it would behoove the GM to air his gripes about the coaching not being able to get the expected results.
The the less than expected results kind of reflect poorly on him too.

Make no mistake, Tomlin owns some blame.
Not upgrading his staff is ridiculous. And the entire Canada fiasco is a legendary blunder.
