Its going to hurt in 2013 to lose him...but with 2014 and beyond in mind...you have to let him walk and take the 3rd....although with the way the draft has been going..I am not so sure how much help that 3rd will be either.

Ed Bouchette writes at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Tomlin had a desire to make Vick a Steeler after he was released from prison in 2009. Vick had just served a 21-month sentence for running an interstate dog fighting ring. Tomlin wanted him, but the Rooney family, the long-time, well-respected owners of the Steelers, didn't share Tomlin's interest.
ed brochette... great source... and if its true i have lost ALL RESPECT for tomlin but not on something the idiot ed reported..

why keep sanders for one year when cotchery over the last 3 years has roughly the same numbers. it's only for a year most likely or even just part of a season if the rook plays much.

we have two vets here to help a rookie along this year. we won't have that next year.

wallace had 6 TD's and over 700 yds. of receptions as a rookie. sanders had 5 in 3 years. we can hope for something like this through the draft. nothings to say we have to use that 3rd on a receiver.

we knock off a year of the learning curve for ben and the rookie if they do it this year. every year we waste ben while waiting on these rookies is starting to get crucial as he ages.

they will be closer to learning this offense together if we do the rookie thing this year. actually i'm in favor of two wr draft picks. love ya sanders but take the pick.

alot depends on what they think of gilreath, bert reed, derek moye as receivers.

wallace played last year( his 4th) for 2.7 mil. with alot more game then manny has. should we pay manny 2.5 for a replay of wallace and alot less production? ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh H*ll No!

thank you call again. we will see what you want next season maybe. i think it's a no brainer.

If the Steelers resign him then I'll be embarrassed. If the team didnt want to part with him at 2.5mill, it should have gave him the 2mill 1st round pick offer. We could have got him for 500k if we match. Dumb on our part. Take the pick, move on.

Have you ever heard the old saying that "one boy is a boy, two boys is half a boy and three boys is no boy at all"? I think the fact that they developed this image of themselves as the "Young Money Crew" was detrimental. The "Young Money" persona went to their heads and they started reading and believing their own press.

It's like a duck in front of a duck. A duck behind two ducks. And a duck between two ducks. Then how many ducks do you have?

I think it'll come down to a simple business decision.

They don't offer and let the Pats take Sanders, they get a 3rd rounder NOW,
If they matched the offer, they run the risk of losing him as an UFA next year, with a comp pick in the following year.

Why delay the inevitable? They wanted to play him as a RFA this year to see if he could put together a full healthy season. No chance they risk losing out on that high of a draft pick.

    They won't match.

Now the problem is..... scouting hasn't exactly been on fire finding WR's in the draft.... It could get rough this year.

What finding wallace, brown, and Sanders in the later rounds sounds like our wr scouts do a pretty good job.

I was curious to see what the Steelers track record was for drafting WR since 2000 and at first I was like eww, not too good but when you look at there success rate when drafting WR's in the 3rd or earlier, it's pretty good, 4 hits (Wallace, Sanders, ARE, Santonio) and 2 misses (Sweed and Willie Reid). Given the number of quality wideouts in this draft, I like our chances should we decide not to match Sanders offer sheet.

    2000
    Danny Farmer 4th round

    2001
    Chris Taylor 7th round

    2002
    ARE 2nd round
    Lee Mays 6th round

    2005
    Fred Gibson 4th round

    2006
    Santonio Holmes 1st round
    Willie Reid 3rd round

    2007
    Dallas Baker 7th round

    2008
    Limas Sweed 2nd round

    2009
    Mike Wallace 3rd round

    2010
    Emmanuel Sanders 3rd round
    Antonio Brown 6th round

    2012
    Tony Clemons 7th round

The Steelers backed themselves into a corner...and you have to let Sanders walk IMO....take the 3rd...draft Marquis Goodwin....runs good routes...and replaces the straight line speed of Wallace.

Just so long as we have all of our ducks in a row.. LMAO!:roflmao:
    I love this board...
I`d have to agree with the general consensus, that if we keep him, it better be for a long term deal, not just next year.
I originally said that we should just keep him for this year, and go from there, but that was short-sighted of me.
If we don`t plan on making him part of our long term plans, we may as well get the 3d rounder for him now, that we would most likely not get after next year.
(Not sure about the "compensatory pick". I thought he would be an UNrestricted free agent after this year, so, why would we get any comp pick for him?)
I agree with the line of thinking, that he IS a solid #2 receiver, and would probably do even better in Marsha`s quick hitting offense, but isn`t that what Haley was beginning to do here?
My BIGGEST concern is his injury history. Who knows how much of that is just random luck, opposed to having an "injury prone" body?
My only other concern is, maybe he is a bit selfish, and not the type of "character", we want in our locker room.
I have no way of knowing any of that, but if it is the case, the Rooneys would be smart to let him go, and see what we can get with the 3d round pick, even if it is a trade for more picks...
Looks like we could use a few, right now, and as Mac(I think,) said, nuthin says that pick has to be his replacement.
We reeeeaaallly need to be looking at Troy/Clarks` replacements, pretty soon tho, IMO...
I also agree it was a pretty shrewd move by Belicheck, to put us in this position.
I have to wonder if the poster that asked if we didn`t put the 1st round tender on him, because we kinda hoped somebody WOULD take him is correct?
Interesting situation, that we will probably never know the true answer to, but sure does add some interest to the off-season, no?
    GO STEELERS!
