It was Harris' prove it season in Smith's offense. The Steelers obviously didn't like what they saw or he would be on the roster.
The money part? The Steelers had the cap space to sign him, but didn't.

Just because you don’t believe in Warren doesn’t mean there is a big hole.

It’s fine to say you believe they made a mistake but pretending they don’t prefer Warren at this juncture is just weird.

Who ever suggested that. Whack way at straw men all you want, but it adds nothing to the discussion.

I believe they prefer Warren at their price, but that they refused to up his workload even in the game when Harris had to leave last season suggests they don't trust him as a lead back.

You are a not a moderator. I barely know you, so you certainly aren't a friend. Given that, you have no business nudging or guiding or whatever term you wish to use. I have repeatedly asked you to knock it off. Whatever you think of me does not mean you any less rude in what you are doing. Your subjective claim about my rudeness is just a weak attempt to justify your own behavior. I am politely asking once again to restrict your responses to me to the content of the posts and I will do the same for you. Thank you.

Speaking of rude posters here, I'm not sure how trolling me constitutes trying to get me to post more respectfully.

That would mean admitting a mistake in passing on the fifth-year option, which they clearly weren't going to do.

Arthur Smith didn't do Najee any favors with his crappy play calling.

    Exactly

They made the right move obviously of not using the 5th year option

That is far from obvious at this point, but hopefully, the running back room is not complete yet. I hope they aren't planning to go forward with Warren, Patterson, and Gainwell, but it wouldn't shock me at this point.

Warren is averaging less than nine carries per game in his career. He has reached 15 in a game once in three seasons. He struggled through multiple injuries in 2024 and missed a game as a rookie, too. The one time he was healthy and Harris was not this past season, the victory over the Bengals, they gave Harris's snaps to Patterson. He also has at least one game that he could not handle poor elements. At best, he is a big question mark taking on the larger role. I love watching Warren play, but it is fair to wonder how effective he will be in a larger role. That is not a great position to have a question mark for a team that wants to lean on the running game.

That Tomlin said he is comfortable with him doing it doesn't mean much at this point. He was comfortable with Pickett as his starter at one point, and you don't think much of him. He was comfortable starting Van Jefferson all of last season and he was worthless. Is Tomlin saying that because he is that sure of Warren or because they don't have another option on the roster? Aren't they also saying they are comfortable with Rudolph at quarterback even though they clearly don't want him to be the starter for 2025?

I hope the plan is to take advantage of the depth at running back in this draft and take one in the third or fourth round to share the load with Warren, or failing that, sign a veteran like Chubb or Dobbins. Either way, they are spending resources they could have put elsewhere had they exercised a relatively cheap option on Harris, which would have been the smarter play given how many holes they had to fill this offseason.

For those in the back! I would love to see Chubb bowling over Garrett. Patterson is wasting a roster spot.

Wasn’t Patterson brought in because if his return skills and the kickoff rule changed

    And then it never happened

    Or was that someone else

edit: I looked it up and yes that is why he was signed

That was the indication at the time, but they did try to mix him in at running back, too. Aside from one game, that did not go well.

Yeah, they let the player they like more go in FA for a minuscule difference in pay when they had 70 million in cap space just to sign the player who they feel is inferior. :goofy:

In the game against the Bengals, when Harris had to leave, why didn't Warren get the ball? Why did they give Harris's snaps and carries to Patterson instead?

You implied that there were posters here arguing that the Steelers didn't want Warren to sign his tender. Nobody argued that. That was the straw man. Misrepresenting the positions of others does nothing for the conversation.

The Steelers preferred Harris over Warren for three years. They started Harris every game. Harris got more snaps. Harris got more carries. I don't know how anyone can argue otherwise.

When Harris kept having to come out of the game against the Bengals, they didn't give the work to Warren. They gave it to Patterson.

Warren is cheaper and has more tread left on the tires. Rather than chasing a free agent, they were just able to put a tender on Warren. Maybe they thought Harris would get more than he did. Maybe Harris wanted nothing to do with them after they refused his option and an extension. I never argued they should just keep Harris. I argued that they should have kept both for one more season with Harris on his fifth-year option, then let him walk. It would have been the smart play given how many other holes they have to fill. Right now, they need another back. Counting on Patterson or Gainwell even as No. 2 is a mistake.

That said, going with the slightly cheaper option would be right on brand for the way the Steelers have pinched pennies this offseason.

In FA why didn’t the Steelers keep the player they like more. See, I can do that too except only one of them is relevant to the discussion.
