You're assuming Rodgers will sign with the Steelers, which he doesn't seem to want to do. Hostages, not volunteers now?

I'm sure Flacco chose Cleveland because he knows if Rodgers signs with Pittsburgh he won't play, with the Browns he will get more playing time.

Yes and if he doesn’t so what. You really think this team is going anywhere with Rudolph/Flacco? Even Rodgers is a long shot but at least he gives you a shot.

It’s almost a certainty they will draft someone so theres your backup or maybe even starter this season depending on who they take.

It is a bit humorous to me that we have a QB room of Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson and I still think we are better off than the Browns QB room.

There's that defeatist attitude again. I doubt the team is thinking that way. I certainly hope not. They should be trying to put the best possible team on the field this season. They have let too many solid players who could have helped them go this year, including the decent options for backup quarterback. That changes if they get Rodgers, thus pushing Rudolph into the backup role where he belongs. I'm simply pointing out that if they don't get him, unless Khan pulls something surprising out of his hat, this is another failed offseason. It is already a bad job to put themselves in that position.

BTW, starting the Monday after the draft, free agent signings no longer affect the compensatory pick formula, so we may start seeing action again.

Nonsense. Moving on from Rodgers to secure a bad QB like Flacco is a bad strategy. If they don’t get Rodgers they will start Rudolph, thats why they went out and signed him, he’s their fall back option. Then they can either draft someone or bring in another FA QB to be a backup.

And then there is an outside chance of landing Cousins. If he gets released it will be closer to the season. I think Atlanta is holding out hope they can work a trade out for him but I cant see them really going into the season with him still on the roster.

As for defeatist it’s just being a realist. There is no QB available outside of Rogers (or Cousins) that remotely gives them a shot at winning so if they lose out on him, so what, they may actually be able to draft high for a change and next draft would be a good one to have a better draft position. I doubt it though, Rudolph if he ends up starting will probably get them enough wins to stay in the 15-20 range.

I thought he landed a big contract? Stink was even lambasting the Bengals for pouring all their money into the WR position.

Maybe he was just making in fun of the fans that want them to sign Boyd to big money.

Well, they’ve got a nearly $70 million annual average tied up in Chase and Higgins

The Bengals are kind of the mirror opposite of the Steelers with cap spending in terms of offense/defense.

The Steelers currently run $87M/$176M, the Bengals $165M/$103M.

Most teams are going to skew toward offense simply because the QB position is the most expensive position. It just goes to show you how bad our QB situation is. Crazy how much we spend on defense.

Obviously the teams with a franchise QB on second contract are very likely to be heavier on offense. Conversely, with a lot of second/third contract guys - some on elite-level deals - we're going to bend the other way. Minkah is their biggest bloat - the money they're spending for how they're utilizing him is out-of-whack. Those dollars would be better spent elsewhere.

I agree 100%. I think that is why they are considering Safeties in the draft and brought in Thorton. Not because Minkah had a down year, but because they want to utilize Minkah alot more and move him around the defense. I could see them using him in the slot alot. That playing him 20 yards deep may take away the opposing offenses deep threat but it also takes Minkah out of a ton of plays. Teams just end up nickel and dimming all the way down the field. It was a bad defensive scheme and use of personnel. Tomlin has to be willing to take more risks other wise the experienced Qb’s and innovative OC’s just exploit our defense, especially if Watt is neutralized or not on his game.

It is defeatist to give up on the season before it starts if they don't get Rodgers or Cousins. That is why I still want them to sign a viable backup like Flacco.

This situation with Rodgers makes the Steelers look weak, not for the first time. Pro athletes do not respect weakness.

Passing on Rodgers to sign a far lesser Qb is a defeatist attitude.

Doesn’t remotely make them look weak. Theres no rush to sign him. Theres no one else.
