General 2025 draft talk

Kaleb Johnson of Iowa ran a 4.57 a lot of people like him too, some guys paly faster than their forty times.

 

Actually tossed my red flag on that, and went back to look it up.
And now I'm officially down a time out.

lol yeah he wasn't top end fast at all. He just had elite vision and great burst to get him through. I actually remember him getting run down from behind on a good bit of runs. The thing is, he made so much happen that wasn't there that it was okay that he couldn't break the big home run. His juke move was lethal (not just for his size, but for anyone) he ran with power, but he had the unique running style and the receiving ability to go with it (we ran fades and slants to him split out like he was a WR).

You can overcome stuff like that if you're good enough, so for Skattebo, we have to take a look at his elusiveness, his receiving ability, and his vision to see if he is a guy that is worth drafting. I'd say he's definitely worth a day 3 pick. I don't love him, but as a RB2 short yardage specialist, he's probably a pretty safe bet to be an okay player in that role. I'm just not convinced he can be a RB1 in the NFL.

 

Now we're comparing Skattebo to Lev Bell?

I can't figure this obsession. We just let go of a bigger, more athletic version of Skattebo. With the generous blessings of most of you, btw.

Go back and watch Najee in college against SEC competition, playing at like 240 lbs. Guy was sky hurdling people, running away from guys, and rag-dolling dudes. Yet, in the pro's, playing much lighter even, people didn't want to keep him cause he wasn't dynamic enough. Skattebo is the bully in high school with small mans disease. He got by with agressiveness, and dealing with high school kids. Let's see him in a real fight with adults. I think you'll be really disappointed. And honestly, I don't think his body will hold up when he goes searching for head on collisions with grown men.

Why aren't you guys suckers for speed or skill the way you are for slow, bloody-nosed, meatheads?

It's funny, the scouting report I looked up said he needed to improve his vision and receiving ability to make it in the pros.

Guess he took that advice to heart.

 

skattebo has better vision to find the hole than najee has. he's far from a run into the pile guy. not that i want him in the first round or anything but he has that difference to najee.

 

Yeah, Bell was a different back in college. I think he played 25-30lbs heavier, which pretty much forced him to be a Harris clone. He dropped the weight and then just morphed into a menace as he upskilled. A lot of it had to do with his unique running style (still don't know how he pulled it off), but at a lighter weight he got to be more dynamic in space. The receiving part he just developed.

 

I would hope you don't want him in the 1st, you'd be the only one on earth I believe.

I want nothing to do with him before rd 5. I counted, there are 11 guys in this class that I'd draft before him.

 

Day 3 for me on Skattebo as well. I think he might be a decent fit if we want to keep Warren as the lead back.. I think Skattebo could be useable in a pinch, but mostly just a 5-7 carry plus "goal line" and "short yardage" packages. I'm mostly intrigued because he's just different than the 6'0''+ 220+ plodder style that I've grown to despise. It has value of course (especially as a 2nd back in tandem), but I just don't want to see another Harris type touch the rock for a while in Pittsburgh. It was gross.

 

no doubt we need a RB.

we need another Guard by next year.

we have this year and next for minkah but lost kazee and it doesn't look good for our draft pick watts. safety isn't getting a lot of hype but it is a need. elliott only through this year. thornhill? we shall see. i'd like to see elliott extended possibly.

we need another corner maybe. depends on trice.

offensive tackle? i guess we shall see.

QB? good question.

OLB. one year with watt left, then we don't know. big drop if we are down to herbig and highsmith and moon for the future.

DL will be a need at some point. we do have cam for two years. age????

WR? one year left on GP. wilson? could be back to last year by next year.

i see RB, G, QB, S, DL, OT as the most glaring needs right now. could change as we move closer to the draft with some extensions or signings.

 

The silver lining in all this is that we have a shot at getting some big money to spend in FA again next season. We have 115 million in space (obviously have some extensions to think about in Watt and Pickens), and there's a non-zero chance that Fitzpatrick gets cut in the offseason before 2026 as well as the option to trade or release Heyward. Those two net us around 32 million in space alone. We have the money to address some of the issues, while having a good amount of draft capital lined up for the 2026 draft. I think we're in a decent spot to rebuild... it just comes down to getting our QB selection correct, whoever that is (and whether its this year's draft or next).

 

Lower center of gravity and better contact balance, too.

 

i doubt we cut heyward. i think a steeler until he retires at this point. porter will be down to his last year. so will minkah. so will elliott. so will CA3. warren too. mason. lowry. queen. let's put it this way, we have 10 guys signed for 2027 past next year. lots of money to shell out and decisions to make. this draft better hit.
