Seems that way. I would've liked to have seen how Pickett would've operated with a competent OC, but the physical tools and traits he has shown thus far say solid backup to me.

And good for the Packers (and Willis) if they forge a good union there. Willis was the epitome of a high ceiling/low floor QB prospect. If they can bring his floor to capable backup that's more than he was a couple of years ago.

I voted no to Mason starting

But since right now it’s Mason vs Skylar I’m picking Mason

Steelers motto with regard to QBs seems to be:

    Give us your old QB.
    Give us your tired QB.
    Give us your benched QB.
Validating other teams' decisions one QB at a time since 2019.

Mason sounds like a guy who can swing a hammer and fight. Skylar sounds like someone who is going home with a bloody nose and tears. So I have to go with Mason. Yep, I know. I am being an internet bully.....but come on, the guys name is Skylar.......

Why would they panic? They might not win a playoff game if they're forced to start Mason? Not winning a playoff game is so out of character that the fans might revolt due to success withdraw? What would we do?! OMG! I'm sure Tomlin's comfortable, he's got nothing to worry about.

The sentiment I'm getting from most people is that "Hey, who knows?", and aren't going to sweat a bad season, as it may break the stranglehold of mediocrity.

I voted no but I think he will be. Slim Pickens at this point and he is familiar with the offense. I don’t care for Russell Wilson returning and Rodger’s won’t be the answer either. I predict 5-12 if he doesn’t start and 8-9 if he does. Nothing to get excited about going into next season. Just as I predicted 3 years ago for the Pens. It’s going to be a rough ride for a few seasons.

Im a little disappointed it's a two-year contract. Steelers should give him three starter years. At a minimum.

No, that's not a talking point. That's a non-starter. One year max then let him find a dark cave.

No man, a starter needs a three-year commitment window at a minimum to compete for SB. Two years is neither here nor there. Make the guy the starter and give him his window and commitment to compete for SB! Two years is a little disappointing when it comes to decision making. A team can always get out of that decision like they did with Pickett if things are not going in the right direction. If the Steelers drafted the starter he would get his 4-5 year window and team commitment. Mason should get the same, or a three-year window at a minimum.

No, you do not make that decision. Plus, even if you did you would be wrong.

They didn't give Pickett three years and he was a first-round draft pick. What makes you think they are going to commit to warmed-over mediocrity like Rudolph for three years?

Rudolph got a shot with the Steelers. He lost his job to Duck Hodges. He got another shot last season with the Titans. He lost the job to Will Levis, who they had previously benched.

You are lying, he never got the starter shot with the Steelers or any team. Pickett got a shot. You do not know what the shot is.

. Mason had his chance to become a starter for the Steelers and didn’t earn the position. No need to give him 3 more years to try and get there again.

That just isn't true.... Mason had a whole season when Ben hurt his elbow in 2019. In pro sports, you don't get to pick when your "shot" is. His was pretty early on in his career. It was unfortunate that he took a pretty gnarly head shot that set him back a bit, but he wasn't good enough to keep his job. He got benched for Duck Hodges, then regained the job back at the end of the year, but his play was pretty uninspiring. He had just as much of a shot as nearly anybody else gets. He wasn't afforded the Kenny "shot" because Kenny was a first round pick and Mason wasn't.... But he had a shot nonetheless.

Even if we roll into the season with Mason as the starter, I don't think there is anyone that believes that we're auditioning him for the "QB of the future" role. He's our back up QB, who might get a shot to start a year for us if we opt not to sign another vet QB. Even if we draft one this year or next, the plan will be to have Mason start until that guy is ready, then have Mason mentor that guy and back him up. If the relationship works, it might afford Mason a more permanent job as the back up QB here in Pittsburgh. Its a role that Mason can play well, and at only 29 years old he can play that role for another 5-7 years.

Please don't accuse me of lying just because I'm challenging your delusional fandom of Mason Rudolph. It's rude.

Rudolph got a shot in 2019. He missed some time with the concussion, but he still had plenty of season to show something. Instead, he played poorly enough that they benched him for Hodges.

The Titans handed the job over to him during last season. Levis wasn't fully healthy and he sucked. Rudolph played poorly enough that they put Levis back in despite his being a turnover machine.

Rudolph is a very good backup. The best the Steelers can hope for is that he isn't horrible as a starter. That is his upside. Not horrible. He has been in the league since 2018 and it hasn't happened for him. That should tell you something, but you refuse to listen. He has been a free agent three times and no team signed him to be the starter any of those times. The first time, he had to come slinking back to the Steelers as a third stringer. The second time, he had to take a backup job with the Titans. This season, he signed with a team that clearly intends for him to be the backup. He got a two-year, $8 million deal and only half of that is guaranteed. That is backup money. Cooper Rush just got more to back up Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. That should tell you something, too, but you refuse to listen.

You and a few others here need to understand something. Nobody owes Rudolph anything, certainly not three years as a starter. Why does that hurt you so?

TEN drafted Levis in the 2nd round to be a starter. A few weeks into the 2024 season Levis injured a shoulder so Rudolph got the start. Levis came back after the injury and lost 5 out of 6 games. They put Rudolph back in to let Levis step back. But in WK18 with nothing to play for they put Levis back in for one last shot to see if he could show something as a starter. He didn't and now the Titans are first in line to draft a QB.

Wait are you saying give Mason Rudolph 3 years as a starter so the Steelers can compete for a Superbowl? That is hilarious beyond belief, if Rudolph is the starter the only thing the Steelers will be competing for is the first overall draft pick. He sucked with the Titans last year bad enough that he did greatly help them get the #1 pick next month.
