Dulac reported that Wilson is looking for a deal of 25 million a year.

It's nice to want things, but no way the Steelers should give it to him.

My point is if I'm the Steelers I wouldn't pay him that much.

I was reading an article The Athletic had the other day about the draft. There's always talk centered around the QB prospects, and one of the authors recalled a head coach's comments to him about the three QB situations a team should aim for. In order, they were: a) a blue-chip QB on a rookie contract; b) a blue-chip QB on a second contract; and c) a QB on a rookie contract.

The thought being that in the absence of an obvious talent it's better to lay up and use the money to improve other areas of the team, rather than to overspend in hopes of capturing lighting in a bottle. Essentially this is what Khan did last year. Even though one of Wilson or Fields was going to start, they were both low cost acquisitions (like Darnold for the Vikes, Baker for Tampa). Problem is neither showed much, and now they're free agents looking for more pay and commitment. So now he's got to leverage that against making the offense appear viable for any would-be FAs he would want to add around the QB.

Still, Khan would be wise to invest the bulk of his draft and FA capital in strengthening other areas of the roster, which depending on the market may mean passing on both and looking at a Jones, Winston, Brisset, etc. and drafting a Dart or Howard to compete with them. (Of course the draft is another example where you don't want to overreach like they did with Pickett.)

i'm not sure i draft any qb. i believe MT wants fields but why give him a new toy if he and rooney are going in two or three years. let the new guy pick his own qb. build the o-line for when the time comes.

What would lead you to believe that? Rooney is a possibility, although we haven't seen Danny hanging around at all yet.

Tomlin? He's not going anywhere. He's only 52, making $12 million a year, and answers to NO ONE. Why leave? He has zero pressure, obviously, to accomplish the goals of an NFL head coach, winning a SB. He just need be cool and hip, and have the admiration of the players that he has failed completely.

that was kind of what art2 was hinting at. 2-3 years for him to step down. if this drought continues, i just see MT leaving with art at that time.

Colbert certainly didn't follow that line of thinking in his last year. Or was that a Rooney decision, not wanting to see another Dan Marino get away?

Draft time here we go, and maybe very active in free agency... personally I wouldn't draft a QB this year, it's probably Fields... I've thought about it and I think Justin Fields compares favorably to a Jaylen Hurts type player, maybe not as good as Hurts in passing but good enough and is durable and physically gifted like Hurts, if it worked in Phili than I am OK giving the reigns to Fields next year as starter

Hurts is a significantly better player than Fields. He also has the league's best offensive line, its best running back, and two stud receivers making him look even better than he is. Fields will have none of that going for him in Pittsburgh.

We are not that far off, we will pick up a more explosive back to pair w warren, probably will draft a receiver to go w pickens, invest in the trenches, we will have a chance

They have 60 million in cap space as things stand right now. They could easily have between 80-100 million after freeing up even more space.

Teams are able to turn things around in 1 season if they have the money.

Their biggest obstacle is at QB. If they plan to roll with Fields they not only need to build the team around him but Tomlin needs to be aggressive on offense and stop with the safe no risk approach.

I agree. The mentality needs to be 'we have nothing to lose'. This team is not one of the AFC elite.

I am not a believer in Fields, he will never be in the same class as Mahomes, Hurts, Allen, or Burrow, but if he is the QB, he needs to be chucking the ball up early in the season to Pickens.

Fields needs to establish a rhythm and build confidence. They can't manage him the same way as last season and open things up at a crawl. That is a recipe for six wins.

Fields' legs become a threat to run only if his arm is a threat in the passing game.

We need the deep passing game to open up the running game because our O-Line isn't good enough. Our defense can't rack up being on the field for whole quarters early in the season.

Does that mean telling the QB not to throw a pick? So the QB is afraid of making a mistake. Will not try to make a play.

we saw it with fields, wilson, pickett. the play safe don't throw over the middle afraid of a turnover football. isn't punting after 3 downs just a turnover too? if it's fields we go nowhere. it doesn't matter who is around him. a guy who can't read much past his first read then run. TE's are a safety net for a QB usually. we brought in another giant one that can play outside some. it gives fields a big target or two to see. changing MT's safe approach may be the hardest part of blast's statement.

When you have lemons you make lemonade. Who are you imagining at QB if it's not Fields? Stafford? Dart?

It is no guarantee that they will get a better back than Harris. Even if they did, the Eagles are still better at just about every offensive position.
