Ah. You're in bourbon country (close enough) In many parts of the US, especially the northeast, anything from the Buffalo Trace distillery has become a hot commodity and rare. Partly because BT couldn't keep up with demand starting a few years ago and by the time they can, it'll be years away since whiskey isn't made overnight. And partly because there's a lot of dipsits (with an "h") that take advantage of their distribution being limited. They'll literally follow the trucks. Snatch up everything they can and then scalp it for huge markups.

If it's legal in your state, you can order directly from the distillery for delivery. Order a case and be set for the year, or week depending.

PA is real picky about ordering alcohol from anyone other than the state run stores.

I drink Writer's Tears Irish Whiskey or Glenmorangie Single Malt Scotch but if I'm out and about I'll order Maker's Mark.

I really like Maker's Mark. Also found out I like Whistle Pig rye. I enjoy the ryes and this one is really good.

It's pretty tough to get caught though. Just don't shop on the border. We have the worst selection and high prices

Sometimes PA liquor folks hang out in stores in Maryland near the border. I can buy anything I want in Maryland. But not alcohol

For a cheaper sipping bourbon, I recommend the Evan Williams 1786 Small Batch. I find it between $22 and $25 for a 750ML.

Then I'll give you something more in line with the thread.

I finally got to try Henry McKenna 10 yesterday (I haven't seen a bottle in the wild in years).

Reminded me a little bit of Wild Turkey Rare Breed. (A little lighter and thinner)

I never drank anything harder then beer until a few years ago. We make lemon/orange cello which is good but I've discovered whiskey. I've only drank the flavored ones. Jack Daniels Honey and Apple. Looking to try other better brands. Learned early on that Jim Beam is cheaper then Jack Daniels for a reason. Jack so much better.

Now I hear Bourbon, then Bourbon Whiskey?? Told it's same thing?? Confused I am.

Don't enjoy straight Volka or Tequila but love in cocktails. Not a fan of Scotch or Scotch Whiskey as I hear it called.

One thing I know for sure, I hate Gin!! A small bottle of Gordon's Distilled Gin was the very first time I got a buzz at the tender age of 14. Bought by a drunk ass guy drinking Ripple who didn't care how young we were. There have been numerous journey's into the center of the mind since then but I never ever drank Gin again. I bought a bottle years ago, poured it out and sat it on top of my dresser. And there it sits.

All bourbon is whiskey. Not all whiskey is bourbon.

All scotch is whisky. Not all whisky is scotch. No bourbon is scotch. No scotch is bourbon.

    All whisky is whiskey. ;)

I can't believe this thread is almost 14 years old! Back then, I wasn't a big fan of whiskey (or whisky). Now, it's my go to for hard liquor (I still drink beer more often than the rest). I started with tequila and rum. I still like them both, but they tend to be a summertime thing now. I used to think I hated tequila back in the day - turns out I just hate well tequila and Cuervo. ;)

There's nothing wrong with flavored whiskies. But if you ever want to expand to whiskey without added flavoring, there's a lot of us who can point you to things you might want to try, and then more based on what you liked or didn't like. I hate the expression "it's an acquired taste." It sounds snooty. But it's sort of true. It's not that you train your palate to enjoy it. It's more like you untrain your palate from wanting overly sweet things. (And there's nothing wrong with having a sweet tooth - unless you overdo it and take a left turn into diabetes. ;) Ask me how I know).

Vodka's only purpose is to make other things alcoholic. By definition it's supposed to be tasteless (other than an ethanol burn anyway). No worries there.

Agreed on gin. I've yet to have one that didn't taste like dirty dishwater.

And I don't care for those either. Gin is just off putting to me. It always tastes like dishwater or soap. Oh well.

You can keep your martinis and negronis.

I'll stick with... everything else. ;)
